What’s up with MUSCLES?

Muscles has ‘been around for a while’ in blogosphere time, but it took me a while to figure out how I felt like feeling about his music. Muscles is a dude from Australia. His music could be classified as ‘overwhelming pop music.’ I usually enjoy it, but I get kind of creeped out because the vocals are so strong that they remind me of a mix of some pop band like MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE mixed with TV on the Radio. But his songs are powerful, poppy, synthy, and dancey.

Here is the picture that he recommends using at his myspace. I just don’t really envision a dude in flip flops, cargo shorts, and a Mario 1Up shirt making that music. Maybe there’s something wrong with my perspective.

Here are some hilarious comments from STEREOGUM’s post about Muscles.[LINK]:

Muscles is a fag and he always will be. He’s just a pussy who’s running away from the scene. Fuck him.

and…

Man. Muscles used to post at an Melbourne music forum years ago, getting 15 people to his small shows in tiny bars. Good on him.
There’s just enough humour in his songs for some people to get it, and the brainless nu-ravers to completely miss the point. It’s really quite clever.

and…

He is one of the worst people I’ve dealt with. The fact he’s getting even a small scale of success makes my stomach turn. Stereogum, so much better music in Australia. Who turned you onto this wanker? My comments are no reflections on the music…

I just want to know who the real MUSCLES is. What’s that dude all about?
This is his album art:

Here’s a video of MUSCLES performing ‘Ice Cream’ live:

Maybe I’ll never understand the aesthetic that Muscles presents through the internet, but WHATEVER. His music really takes you to a city close to BANGERVILLE, so whatever.

Wow I have never heard things like this before. Living in Melbourne I have met more than a few people who know Muscles or have met him and everyone says he is pretty nice.

Difficult to book but generally a nice guy.

There is a really broad range of Australian music available and Muscles is just one of many, many good ones.

He also apparently hates music blogs posting his music :)

Myspace Australia just ran a pretty hilarious ‘vote for where you want Muscles’s secret show to be’ promotion.

I think Coffs Harbour won. They’re big into nintendo tshirts and pop music there. Probably.

I was at show in Miami last month… it was a great time, I imagine when way more people get into it, his shows will be a killer time

i am still on the wall about muscles.

the white noise remix is certainly deadly. as are some of the other remixes.

i saw him live opening a soulwax show and it felt sooooo emo.

Muscles is one of the most down to earth kids out there. In fact for both of his NYC gigs, people just thought he was the soundtech setting up equipment until he actually started playing. I was the one the turned Stereogum on to them, but I didn’t see that comment. Oy.
