I’m not a guy who pretends to be excessively appreciative of hiphop, even though it’s probably a valuable mode of expression in communities that I can in no way relate to. This means I am only exposed to mainstream rap, popular remixes, and rappers with a little bit of indie-crossover appeal.
However, this Lupe Fiasco song Featuring Matthew Santos makes me think “This is what a Kanye West collaboration with a mainstream-sounding artist SHOULD sound like.” Whether it’s rapping over Peter Bjorn and John, singing with Chris Martin, John Mayer or the Maroon 5 bro, it usually makes me feel awkward and gimmicky. It seems like Lupe Fiasco has cultivated a pretty authentic image, too.
