What's the deal with SANTOGOLD? She confuses me. I've seen her around blogville for a while, and started to finally listen to her music.
There's Santogold with M.I.A. Maybe my problem is that I didn't find M.I.A. incredibly approachable/listen-to-able in regular contexts, so now it's tough for me to get into this product that I perceive is intended for the ears of people 'who like stuff that reminds them of M.I.A."
According wikipedia, SANTOGOLD "went to college at Wesleyan University where she studied Caribbean and West African drumming." Am I a bad person if I don't appreciate tribal beats that aren't in 4/4?
I was watching some videos of SANTOGOLD performing live, and her sidekick MC sort of confused me. She looks kind of like 'the crazy white girl from Oklahoma who for some reason decided to study Caribbean and West African drumming at college' and met Santogold.
A lot of stuff on Santogold's myspace sounds different than this song that they made a video for.

If I heard this song while dining at Chili's, I would guess that it was TEGAN AND SARA.

According to her resume, she's probably a musical genius, and people who know a lot about music appreciate her. Am I a bad person for not getting into it? I know it's probably more relevant and complex than traditional hip hop, which makes it bloggable, but maybe I should have taken a 'music appreciation' course.
I know what a lot of commenters are going to say: "You don't like her just cuz she's black." That's not the case. I love black people in alternative music, and all minorities. Remember my post on MLK Day about minorities?

I really like the XXXChange remix of L.E.S. Artistes. but that's it. I don't think it's rap... M.I.A. isn't really rap either.and who cares about packaging of artists, or caring about them as people. m.i.a & santogold are one of the best things to come out rap wise in the last couple of years. BUT the most amazing FACTOR here is that HRO barely started listening to santogold. OMFG.. wtfs up with that?

Love Santi she is amazing... i think if she was prettier she would get more play. not to be mean but she is really round the way! in like every pic i see of her i almost don't recognize her, she just doesn't look like that big of a deal. She is a musical genius though and i DO sweat her clothes to death.

I love SANTOGOLD on that Spank Rock track B.O.O.T.A.Y. (Though my girl Sylvia of Kudu takes the crown on that track, but that's another story).I think L.E.S. Artistes is kinda boring (especially with that video) Still i'm a fan.I saw Santi perform a bunch of times when her band Stiffed were still together 3 or 4 years ago. I loved that band. She had killer Rock n Roll stage presence with them. Speaking of confusing packaging, does anyone remember that singer Res? Santi wrote the majority of the songs on that album which got written off as boho-neo-soul blah blah blah bullshit even though it was more rock and roll than people gave her credit for (Res included probably). There was one track on the album called Golden Boys that Santi supposedly wrote about Mos Def (it's not a flattering song)Anyways, Santi's cast a wide net in her music for almost a decade now. I have a lot of respect for her keeping it fresh for all these years.

Rose is a wonderfully amazing and awe-inspiring sex pixie who makes everyone around her feel beautiful and important. Rose kills it every time. She has more airbrushed clothing than anyone I've ever met.
well maybe you just don't like her. i lov her music but this kind of music is right up my alley... it doesn't mean you don't get it if you don't like something, there is nothing to get... Santogold's music is NOT hip-hop or rap music at ALL. Period.Maybe that is why you are confused. If you had listened to her music, without ever seeing her, you wouldn't have assumed it was hip-hop at all. But you see her, and she has chocolate colored skin . . . so you're confused. No offense, but you need to know that just because an artist is black doesn't mean the music is hip-hop or rap.
