Cadence Weapon: Rap That Alternative White People Like

I always have trouble approaching alternative rap. I’m not sure if I am supposed to appreciate it because it is a good product, or because I will be more interesting and cultured by embracing it.

Cadence Weapon raps about things like being from Canada, or using the internet. I think his lyrics are probably complex, and his songs are probably conceptually well-executed, compared to other entry level rappers. He also probably knows a lot about the history of hip-hop, and other stuff that makes his product more relevant.

What’s the deal with MCs? I feel like in the alternative world, there are two different types of MCs (but both have the common goal of serving as a think piece about black stereotypes in the rap world). There’s either the intelligent metaphor, like Cadence Weapon, who presents ideas pretty directly through his lyrics. Or there’s the Spank Rock model of ‘taking the stereotype to a new level for the sake of starting the partie.’ Which model do you prefer?

Did you know that Cadence Weapon used to write for Pitchfork?

Here’s a video of Cadence Weapon covering Weezer’s “Pink Triangle.”

Is RAP just something that should only be analyzed in the live setting?
Am I a racist?
Remember when Eminem rapped over that Dido song?
Did you know that the Soulja Boy song was made in Fruity Loops?
Can I only enjoy hip hop by mainstream rappers because they rip off samples from golden oldies?

stop asking yourself if you’re racist Carles. You don’t know much about rap? It’s ok! You don’t like rap that much/at all or you fuckin’ hate it? It’s ok!
You make your guilt level seem like it’s disgustingly off the charts! Are you going to vote for Obama too?

I’m black and I hate mainstream rap!

Also, Cadence is ok…close but no cigar.

At least he writes his Myspace bio in first person, I can definitely appreciate that. And his voice sounds like Aesop Rock’s.

That’s all I really have to say about him. I’ve heard much better hipster rap, but he’s still better than most of the crap on the radio these days.
