I don’t think many people have a problem with party pix that blur the line between art and pornography, but how do you feel about these stabbing photographs outside of a Syndey nightclub, taken by hobogestapo?
Is there a moral code that nightlife photographers need to adhere to? When is it ‘not cool’ to post a pic? Are nightlife photographers being genuine when they do their best to give the most authentic representation of each night, or do they just want krazie stuff 2 happen so they can get attention?

A major artery in a young man’s leg has been severed in an overnight stabbing incident in Sydney’s Kings Cross entertainment district. Police say the victim was walking on Bayswater Road about 2am (AEST) today when he became involved in an argument with another man. “During the altercation, he was stabbed in his upper thigh,” a NSW Police statement says.

Hey guys, I know a picture is meant to tell a thousand words but hopefully I can fill you in on some of the details from the night.
I took the photo (not carlito) and I was there for the whole incident
- I was taking a break from taking photos in the club to have a chat with my girlfriend
- 2 gentleman were having a very heated argument next to me before all this happened
- next thing I know a dude has been stabbed, as a reaction I took a photo to the blood trail I saw on the floor (this was taken about 20 seconds aftet it happened, note: he is still standing)
- I went to the gentleman and made sure he was ok, he clearly wasnt, I urgently found someone who knew first aid and gave the gentleman some attention
- instantly I diale 000 (Aus emergency number), at this point the whole moment was so surreal I felt it was my duty to take a photo of the scene for the police and for my own keepsake
- I stayed until the detectives turned up and went back to the station for several hours and gave a full statement, upon completion I was granted the key to the city.

I don’t see what the fuss is all about. These photos are newsworthy and publishable, whether in a paper, on television or on a photo blog.
Realistically, taking photos of shit that happens is what photographers do. So taking photos of a victim of a crime is not that big an issue, especially as the photographer, Deckland, makes a point that he had already found someone to provide the victim first aid and called the emergency number before he knowingly took photos of the victim.
If you were in a park with your camera and a plane crashed, would you keep shooting the wildlife, or would you start shooting the crash?
And I am sure that at least 80% of commenters here have viewed images or video on the internet which has been as bad or worse than these stills, and probably haven’t thought twice about it because they can’t associate themselves with the victim.
Would you have rathered the photographer sell these images to a newswire service and try and (selfishly) make money out of the whole event, like a “professional photojournalist”? The pictures were shared, for free, and for public consumption (and self-censorship), and are nothing more than a reflection of the real world we live in.
If people only took shots of party people tripping off their heads, we’d have a very one-eyed view of the world when those photos were seen as an accurate depiction of life today.
