The "MSTRKRFT can ‘fix’ any song" Theory

I was watching this MSTRKRFT interview which features some good insights into their brand, creative process, and showcases some of the best & worst habits of alternative celebrities.

At the 4:20 mark in the video, the MSTRKRFT bros start talking about remixes, and go pretty in depth into their remixable criteria manifesto.

Do you enjoy MSTRKRFT Remixes? I’ve read a few HRO comments about songs or the way people look that say “I think this would be better if MSTRKRFT remixed it.” Do you buy into the theory that MSTRKRFT can fix any thing?

I’ve never been particularly into their originals, but I think they are probably pretty socially relevant in terms of ‘being a 2 man electro act that was a pioneer in learning how to capture the hearts of Generation Y clubgoers.’ When it comes to modern indie music, I think they might be one of the band/producers most responsible for ‘Americanizing’ the current state of electro-club-dance stuff.

Whenever I hear a MSTRKRFT songs, I end up somewhere within this range of conclusions:
BAD CONCLUSION: “Why do people like MSTRKRFT so much?”
OKAY CONCLUSION: “I don’t ‘get’ this, but it’s probably really good if I knew a lot about the history of electronic music.”
GOOD CONCLUSION: “This is pretty good.”

How to you feel about MSTRKRFT’s body of remix work. Do u wish they stuck to remixing lesser-known bands like Metric or New Young Pony Club? Or do you like this new phase where they are remixing Usher, Jesse McCartney, and who knows who else within the next 2 years? As alternative markets continue to transition into mainstream markets, MSTRKRFT could continue to be a critical intermediary between both worlds.

If some1 could remix your life, who would it be?

They’ve gone downhill fucking fast in the last 6 months… VuVuVu and Bounce have got way too much going on in them… and whats with some shit voice over at the start of their current tracks saying “This is MSTRKRFT”?… Don’t get me wrong they are a decent duo live, and Monster Hospital is a banger and their remixes to D.A.N.C.E and Woman are amazing and there early stuff like Street Justice and Work On You are amazing but i don’t have a clue why they are going in a slightly different direction of a more harder, heavier, more distorted sound, when they had a winning formula… Yes they are pioneers, but i think there are producers and bands that are miles ahead of them right now…

Street Justice and Work On You yeah, were a cooler sound. I think that’s when they were perhaps more “european” if you will.. now they are perhaps americanizing things with their BNGR-ISMS and america electro indie people sure <3 their BANGRSSSSS. I think that started really coming out in more remixes they were doing. boring now, they were cool but their sound changed a bit like someone else said.. they’re like a more comodotized (spelling oops) electronic music act that you can still kind of like because production is good and dance floor structure good. plus it seems and they’re all business which I guess one could appreciate but it’s not my thing. artistz rulz

even though I have the jesse mccartney remix, I draw the line at downloading usher because people actually like him, but jesse mccartney is a joke.

I agree with some of the other posters, MSTRKRFT hasn’t had a hot remix since the Kylie Minogue track, their remix quality is definitely sliding. Best thing about there live act is how they guzzle Crown Royal straight from the bottle. Alt bros know how to party like rockstars too.

Still, I got no love for that Usher track. Go back to remixing indie rock and pop hits, tread lightly with the hip-hop tracks.

Still, “Monster Hospital” introduced me to MSTRKRFT and I’d say I’m the better for it.

big up to that anonymous that pointed out that la riots suck. it was about time someone has the guts to say that. damn, i really don’t get them. why is everybody all over them? there must be something about their work, but all i can hear when i hear an la riots remix is complete shit.

mstrkrft start to to ride that banger bandwagon they kind of created themselves with less distorted, less annoying tracks back in 2006/2007 so that’s ok.

but la riots… no honestly, can anyone please tell me what it is that makes them so uber cool?

and then i’d like diplo to make a mash up of my life and the life of steve aoki, please.

Some of their remixes are good and I like Vuvuvu, I think Bounce is garbage. MSTRKRFT are getting overrated, and I seriously hope the buck stops here with these mainstream artist remixes. The Usher remix was boring…and I seriously hope they focus on their own stuff rather then remixes, because “The Looks” was mediocre at best. Good luck, MSTRKRFT and for fucks sake, shave the ’staches.

    1. The Usher song was boring originally. They made it BETTER, and it’s undeniably fun and feel-good.

    2. They (MSTRKRFT) know more about dance music than you so it isn’t ‘beat-jacked’ but rather influenced.

    3. GET A REAL FUCKING JOB, HIPSTER.

i think DJ Sega would have done a better job remixing this song. i like the original version’s beat just fine. DJ Sega does a lot better job remixing the big hip-pop hits with his heart-pounding bass rhythms. lets hope mstrkrft sticks to what they do best – pop/electro/indie hit remixes.

oh yeah and i’d like diplo to do a mash-up of my life but with cobrasnake yardsale clothing worn at every stage + cory kennedy giving me my first blowj*b.

get a brain people… using other peoples’ music as your framework is not what constitutes an artist. there is nothing remotely genuine or innovative that they are doing.

Death From Above ‘79 is where JFK’s talent lies, he can work a synth but not to any extraordinary extent. Makes catchy and fun club/party tracks but lacks innovation. Many electronic artists can put it together much better for performance sets.
