No Age Got a 9.2 on Pitchfork (but I still don’t ‘get’ why I should appreciate them)

I wonder if Pitchfork ratings have a more significant effect on hype machine blog buzz, or on album sales.

How did NO AGE trick the world into being a critically acclaimed band? They are apparently a lofi punk band, and even had coverage with a bunch of other bands (such as Times New Viking, and Jay Reatard) on MTV.

Feel free to sample 8 seconds of this song before turning it off.

Is NO AGE even a good lofi band?

There needs to be some sort of committee that makes sure music like this stays in the suburban garages of parents whose kids dropped out of highschool before they move to NYC/LA. I just think we shouldn’t really honor genres like this, particularly when atleast 50% of the blurbability has to do with ‘how it sounds like stuff from the past, back when things were authentic.’ When band blurbs are focused on tying the sound down to an era, I think it crowds out the demand to actually appreciate the music, and can really detour people from confessing that the product isn’t very bloggable.

I’ve read that No Age is supposed to remind me of Sonic Youth. Is that true?

Here’s a video for the hilarious MTV segment about ‘the new lofi punk genre that every1 needs to hear.’

[Video May Not Be Viewable in your RSS Reader]
Do you trust John Norris as a tastemaker?
Remember when Gideon Yago tried to replace John Norris as the VJ who was ‘young, cool, and indie’, but then John Norris just got 10 makeovers in a row?

ALTERNATE NO AGE THEORY: Is No Age kind of like Health, except without any remixes to make me buy into them?

More Realistic Theory: ‘lofi punk music’ is a pyramid scheme (or inside joke) for people who honor traditional musical criticism too much.

Did u ever listen to punk?
<3 <3 Or was Taking Back Sunday as punk as you got? <3 <3

Yeah No Age was getting soooo much hype, so I thought I’d check it out to see if it was worth the hype because, y’know, 2.6% of the time things are worth the hype (can we have some sort of graph to depict this?). But then I listened to it and my brain started leaking out my ears. I guess some people are into brain liquification? Is that like, totally hip now or something?

I totally agree, vaguely remembering the name I looked it up on eMusic and saw that it was the only one of eMusic’s top 10 for 2007 that I didn’t want to download (after listening to the samples of course).

Yes, I listen(ed) to punk, but I think lofi is a scam. You shouldn’t have to MAKE it sound lofi if you’re punk (not that hard if you’re just indie either). Why is it that crappy bands have to emulate the worst tendencies (taken out of the band’s context) of good bands like SY and Billy Childish?

    @Anonymous,

A scam? Or maybe they enjoy the sound? Brian Wilson went out of his way to make the reeverbd, noisey sound of the Beach Boys, why can’t Ariel Pink or Stevie Moore?

i know you may have never listened to “punk” but it was kinda influential on every rock band of the 80s 90s and today (AKA all the bands we listen to)

if you don’t love music, don’t blog about it

if you don’t get “lo-fi”, got to Best Buy

    btw the song’s good dummy

I’d rather listen to TBS than No Age. At least TBS can be unapologetic guilty pleasure fun. No Age is just… uninspiring and forced. I tried listening to them multiple times, multiple listens.

    Didn’t feel anything.

It’s not that their bad… you just listen and think “tell me something I don’t know”

    @thepassingstatic,

“tell me something I don’t know”: you don’t experience that with Taking Back Sunday? What music DO you like, if you only want to hear things you don’t know. And, do you re-listen to music, or do you only experience the new because somehow that’s worth more.

You people bashing HRO should be thankful you even have the opportunity to. There is no discourse on PFork – it’s completely a one way street, no option to post comments or leave feedback outside of that joke they call a “readers poll”, no letters to the editor, etc. They’ve wrapped themselves in an indestructible cloak of smuggy self assurance that no one will be calling them “a fggt” in the comments section because they ripped apart Does It Offend You Yeah. And people wonder why they have such an impact on hyping music…

    Silence is compliance, yall.

NO AGE doesn’t really deserve to be blogged about. But an unblogworthy band getting a 9.2 on Gayfork? Thats blogtastic.

Or like… they’re not TERRIBLE. They’re just kind of OK. All this GAY AGE buzz really makes me question their live show. Maybe they have some tricks to make their music less boring and unmemorable.

Music journalists are a faggoty bunch of YES MEN who want nothing better than to say that they were a part of something BIG. Like that time when _____ got popular.

Maybe not a 9.2, but defiantly better than the shit you post carles. Your theories lack substance. Its interesting to see people who haven’t experienced much punk attempt to analyse it. You epitomise the ignorant mainstreamer who believes that alternative culture is just wankers trying to be arty or sophisticated.

Still, on some level, i do enjoy your music posts. So controversial.

Get the fuck over yourself, Carles.
You: “When band blurbs are focused on tying the sound down to an era, I think it crowds out the demand to actually appreciate the music, and can really detour people from confessing that the product isn’t very bloggable.”

Aren’t blogs a recent development? Is that not a time constraint? Fuck you if you think music is only valuable if “bloggable.”

No Age aren’t trying to be whatever the hell “lofi punk” is, as you so adamantly define it, it’s a COLLECTION of EXACTLY as you described it: their garage and schiavo recordings. And it is fucking great. The first track off of that album is glorious.

I don’t even like No Age that much. But you made not a single specific point against No Age in your blog post. Instead, you blabbered on about your inability to fathom something and then joked. You should not be blogging. I am just posting, who gives a fuck what I say, but you’re the blogger, you’re delivering, you have responsibilities: and ya blew it.

And fuck your definition of “Real punk.” Aren’t you so cool you got past your taking back sunday days and are now afraid of no age! Sonic Youth sounds A FUCKING LOT like No Age, it’s dirty and it’s feedbacky and it’s raw. All you people do is bitch about Pitchfork because you’re the same damn “superconscious” (mocking your ownself) who reads the damn website. Pitchfork is just another reviewing website: leave them the fuck alone. They blow, I agree, I’ve never read a review I agree with on that website. But you’re no better than them. In fact you’re worthless

What do you find so horrible about No Age? You act like you are so much better than Pitchfork, but at least they talk about the music. Instead you fall entirely into the Pitchfork mentality that you fake to loathe and blabber on about era and scene contexts: “oh lol do you trust THAT guy to recommend music cuz i’m so much more worthwhile? oh yeah pitchfork focuses on time too much to make the music bloggable, which isn’t really a era-specific thing anyways lol”

Basically WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT NO AGE? Just that they’re “lo-fi punk,” (not sure what that’s supposed to mean, as if Bonnie Prince Billy wasn’t associated with Slint, as if Lo-fi isn’t entirely punk), that apparently we should listen for 8 seconds and turn it off without any reason as to why, and ummm No Age didn’t drop out. You’re one of the worst bloggers I’ve come across.
