My Relationship with Girl Talk

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Girl Talk. One of my altest bros sent me the CD. He couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard Girl Talk yet. He was like “U HAVEN’T HEARD NIGHT RIPPER? IT’S FCKNG AMAZING, BRAH?” We had a party to attend later that night, and instead of pre-partying with faggie electro, we decided to hear some wacky mashups. I saw my alt-bro’s eyes light up as he exclaimed, “OMG. Is that James Taylor? This R0X0RZ!”

[This picture represents Girl Talk becoming comfortable in his own shoes as one of the world's top alternative celebrities.]

This blog post is intended to confront the issue: “IS GIRL TALK MAINSTREAM OR ALT?” I think he’s one of the most difficult alt-artists to decide whether or not you are supposed to like because:

  • He doesn’t ‘make’ his own music
  • He looks like a mainstreamer gone alt
  • His shows are no longer enjoyable because of the seas of tweens dressed in neon, & frat bros on their annual ‘alt night’
  • DJs are easy to resent
  • so many people who know too much about music enjoy him too much
  • so many uninteresting people think they are interesting bc they like him.

GIRL TALK has entered the genre of ‘music that uninteresting people like in order to seem more interesting.’ He has joined other top Hypemachine artists like Radiohead, Coldplay, MGMT, and whoever else has been ‘popular’ for the past 3 months. He has become the kind of artist who is ‘acclaimed’ no matter what he does, so it doesn’t even really matter whether or not his product is good any more. It will always be bloggable/magazine blurbable, and it will always be somewhere around decent, but since he has the most justified brand of ‘mashups’, he will be able to get away with it even though most people will say ‘mashups R DEAD.’

When Girl Talk comes to town, people will come to party. Altbros, fratbros, and creepy 30 year olds who buy 18 year olds drinks will come ready to grind. Teen alt sluts will wear their zany sunglasses for the first time at night when they get on stage with Girl Talk. Communities in the Midwest are proud that they are alternative enough to host Girl Talk concerts.

An interesting thing about Girl Talk is that alt musical historians are unwilling to concede whether he is mainstream or alt. When he first started out, he was apparently rlly conceptual. He played music that was crappy and no1 liked, and had to use gimmicks like ‘getting drunk’ and ‘having skanky backup dancers’ as he played to audiences of no1/probably weirdo goth-alt people. Gregg Gillis used 2 be ‘underground’, because ‘underground’ means that u r crappy & no1 likes u.

Then I guess he discovered what Girl Talk 2.0 was all about with MASHUPS, and was able to take advantage of the golden days of DJs back in 2007. (s000 long ago). For the rest of eternity, Diplo and Girl Talk will be the only ‘DJs/laptop DJs/non-DJs’ who are allowed to make mashups & not get shit 4 it. “Night Ripper” was an album made before it was intended to BLOW UP. I think that’s why so many people feel comfortable with it, since there was no hype. It was more like stumbling upon a really interesting episode of Frasier that made you think about life. You would be alright without it in your life, but it’s pretty okay that it came in2 your sphere of consciousness.

With added expectations, “Feed the Animals” was only going to be ’something that d-bags said they liked’ or ’something that d-bags decided not to like without even listening to it.’

FEED THE ANIMALS
I didn’t really listen to ‘Feed the Animals.’ I listened to some of the first couple of tracks, but in all honesty, it was WAAAY too black-ish for me. I felt kind of like I had accidentally bought a rap CD and then drove home from my local record store as a black man yelled at me about metaphors that only urban people and empty white suburbanites pretend to understand. I think an issue might be ‘hip hop is not authentic enough any more’, so GirlTalkBro had to use a bunch of the gimmicky Top40 songs that it’s difficult to identify with.

Issues with FEED THE ANIMALS:

  • Track Selection wasn’t ALT-enough. “GIRL TALK DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ALT PEOPLE.” -Kanye West
  • There was no Justice, Teenagers, other gimmicky ‘indie/electro’ hits that he should have included to repay the mainstream alts who have enabled him to play to sold out shows of entry-level alts/mainstreamers/bros/bros-who-grind-on-any-piece-of-ass for the past 1.5 years.
  • TOO BLACKISH. I mean, SRSLY. I don’t GET rap, and I can’t identify most of the choruses/lyrics without the annoying original tracks behind them.
  • Overall, it didn’t really ‘get my attention’ and ’suck me in’ to a world that ‘represented an escape’ from ‘how seriously I am supposed to take music.’ It didn’t make me ‘want 2 have fun’ and ‘4get about important things’ and just ‘get my dance on’ and ‘get my drank on’ with a ‘group’ of my ‘closest’ ‘friends.’

But yeah, it doesn’t even really matter, bc it is a Girl Talk album, and it’s art! And when a lot of people like a product like this, it’s really beautiful. Our society has come a long way. It’s amazing. So just chill out and be happy that we live in a world connected by wires where people can hear media like mashup albums. It’s great, yall. I mean, I’m happy that I have this outlet for yall to even read what I’m thinking. Let’s not focus on being disappointed by ‘Feed the Animals’, and just take some time to appreciate what it means 2 live in the internet age. Love yall.

Other questions/thoughts:

  • Why does HRO only ‘review’ mixtapes that are released as ‘albums’?
  • If you were disappointed by ‘Feed the Animals’, you are REALLY going to hate his next album.
  • I think an interesting about Gregg Gillis is that he is ‘a smart dude in a good situation.’ Most alternative celebrities and real celebrities are usually idiots who got lucky and now get to display their terrible personalities for a living. Gregor Gillis
  • I think I read that Girl Talk has had a long-term girlfriend through his alt-celeb-status transition. Maybe he should dump her and get more tugjobs?
  • I read that in the future, Girl Talk is planning to make ‘new songs out of old songs’ as opposed to straightforward mashups. That’s going to go TERRIBLY, but I think he’ll be closer to his roots as a conceptual artist. Hopefully he is able to put food on the table.
  • Overall, I am extremely comfortable with Gregory Gillis not expecting me to pay for his music. It makes our relationship a lot better. I’m glad I didn’t have to steal his album from him, and he is glad that I gave him $0 for his new album.
  • SRSLY though… why didn’t he use more BLOG HOUSE gimmicky music? [tracklisting]

What can we learn from Gregory Gillis (AKA The Girl Talks)?
Greg Gillis has perfected the Mainstream-Alt Vortex. When you are an artist or a brand that is sucked into the mainstream-alt vortex, it is more difficult for consumers to pin you down as ‘being authentic’ or ‘being popular’. In most circumstances, you can only be ‘authentic’ or ‘popular.’ There is no middle ground. However, an artist like GIRL TALK is constantly hovering between being considered super authentic/innovative, but at the same time a safe, popu
lar choice for people who may or may not be ‘taking a risk’ by liking ’something s000 random.’

This cycle makes no sense, but neither does Girl Talk.

CAN SOME1 PLZ EXPLAIN GIRL TALK? IS HE ALT OR MAINSTREAM? IS HE UNDERGROUND OR POPULAR OR AUTHENTIC OR AUTH-CORE?

Anyways, GIRL TALK is here to stay, so we might as well get used to him because one day he will be playing Fortune 500 Annual Conclaves to get employees fired up.

XX BONUS XX

Remember the time Girl Talk got a $500 Taco Bell Coupon and gave tacos away to attendees of his concert?

[Girl Talk should be hired by summer camps to make groups of kids shut up, but then get them excited.]

Remember when Greg Gillis got shut down after some college bro got tasered, and then had to rally the troops to ‘find the next great party?’

[I love Girl Talk's "let me level with you, bro" voice of reason in this video]

xx BONUS GIRL TALK alt Vs. mainstream image analysis xx

S0 MAINSTREAM

Just a bro from Pittsburg makin some tunes!

I have a beard, yes! I wear a Pirates hat.

I am transitioning into my alt existence. I am feeling comfortable with more attention than ever. I am simply ready to party. I have an emerging niche market

I will sell t-shirts to mainstreamers.

I have mastered my kraft (mstrd my krft).

I have found my alternative mainstream existence. My journey is over. Consumers will pay what they want for my album. I hope Prince doesn’t sue me.

EPIC POST. I have to admit i showed up to this whole alt/electro scene at the same time I was listening to night ripper and I was like oh is he alt? but never thought it more past that. now its a walking the line scene where you gotta watch who you say you like girl talk to. night ripper was awesome, best mash up for sure. but I can understand the hate on feed the animals.

tl;dr agreein that girl talk is tricky.

why would anyone hate on the GT/GG?
all the bro wants to do is allow anyone and everyone to jam the fuck out and have fun. i think he should have moved on to the “making new songs out of tiny pieces of old songs” thing for feed the animals, though.

and there’s already a shit ton of “hey lets put bad rap vocals ontop of electrobangers”. GT is not needed for that.

your girltalk timeline is WAY OFF buddy! he used to be WAY more ALT in the early days. he used to wear crazy bright colored clothes and giant nikes, like the male version of MIA in fashion, before that was ALT dresscode. he used to wear weird borderline child predator glasses. i’m not positive of this, but i’m pretty sure the pics of him that you claim are MAINSTREAM are from his days at his dayjob. those really normal pics are from when he was working as an engineer because he had to look like that. he was way ALT prior to that and since quitting, he’s gone on to the CCR 70’s jesus look. those MAINSTREAM pics are middle-era girltalk.

he’s a difficult timeline to put together!

Feed the Animals was lame. Autorock is doing what GirlTalk was doing with his previous album, but better and for free-ninety-nine. Let me put on my un-PC hat and agree that Girltalk is an excuse for alt-bros to listen to the same Top-40 southern hip-hop that all the d-bags and frat dudes drunkenly grind to. Now I can’t bring my little blipster heinie to the alt-club without some hipster shaking their bootie at me, giving me a pound and going “yea gurl u B workin it”! Thanks Girl Talk!

    Carles,

In the past I’ve found this blog hilarious. I could see myself making babies with this blog, tenderly massaging this blog after a hard day at the office, even, dare I say, giving this blog a messy tubjob in a dirty Motel 6 where closer inspection of the sheets reveals blood and lovestains. No longer. In all seriousness, I’m appalled at the phrasing with which you objected to this album on the grounds. “TOO BLACKISH”? As a Caucasian commenting on the actions of another of his vein, I’m pretty fucking disappointed the way you’ve chosen to phrase your reservations. That, along with some of the actually racist comments left here, makes me ashamed to be a hipster.

After reading this long, over analytical article, one exact sentance left a bad taste in my mouth. ” are we supposed to like Girl Talk because…” To me, this is where a huge problem of “hip” society stems. People should be confiedent enough to make their own decisions to what they like and don’t like without first consulting a third party. (i.e. this blog) Girl Talk is what it is,nothing more or less. It’s experimental, edgy, creative, and most of all the product of some cat having a good time mixing different styles and generes of music. Why are you SUPPOSE to like Girl Talk? Make up your own fucking mind, I dare ya, if you want to be mindless sheep following the herd of the retarded masses, watch Opra

what rlly pisses me off about GT is that 9/10 of his mashups rlly suck. I mean there’s some good shit but most of it doesn’t rlly sound that good. I read a post on panda toes (http://pandatoes.blogspot.com/2008/07/new-girl-talk-song-well-more-or-less.html) about a bunch of mashup posers who want to be GT but their music is fucking way better than his. So rlly he is now taking the spotlight from all the authentic posers/mashupers. people like his music just bc he is girl talk not bc his music is good.

As far as I can tell, Crls is saying that if you listened to (and liked a little) when Night Ripper first came out, then you are authentic/alt.

For what its worth I would like to put things in a little perspective. There is no such thing as “the Good” or “Quality” or “authentic” or “alt.” It follows then that when we use these words we are merely observing what the relevant community asserts. So Crystal Castles (for e.g.) is only “good” b/c the hipster community says it is good. Whether u like CC doesn’t matter b/c nobody gives a shit what you think or like.

Now some things follow from the above: 1. the safest place to be in the hipster pack is not too far ahead or too far behind but cruising in the middle. Now if ur the last person on earth to have gotten hip to CC then ur probably not w/ it. On the other hand, if ur comsuming some culture b/4 anyone else in the hipster pack has consumed then ur out on a limb b/c the pack may not run that way. Of course u might get lucky and the pack will run that way… Now I suppose it might argued that a particularly savvy person can predict which way the pack will run, but this is really a case of cruising in the middle of the pack. Think about it.

Okay so the point is, don’t worry about whether ur tastes are hip or good. NOBODY’s tastes are alt or good, b/c “authentic”, “alt” “good” & “quality” don’t exist apart from the pack.
don’t worry about being the first to consume a bit of hip culture. U really don’t want to be that guy that is into god-knows-what music that lives and dies in complete obscurity.

theres a huge difference between listening to real music and listening to girl talk.

girl talk does to music what sesame street did to kids = major ADD/ADHD. if you want a mashup get a 30-45 minute or longer DJ set if you still have the attention span for music.

if he refilters popjunk than he can’t be alt
he has skillz but his heart is confused

if he stole alt sounds and made good mash

As much as I don’t like Girl Talk, the comments on this blog are appalling. Too blackish? That’s not even a good adjective nor is it a real word. It’s fucking ignorant. Also, how is this a long blog? The people who commented that it is too long to read must never have finished grade school.

Anyways, yeah I would consider Girl Talk pretty mainstream, in the sense that he plays mostly mainstream music. However, as a DJ he’s shit. It’s all about Gilles Peterson, Boys Noize, and DJ Shadow. THOSE GUYS CAN DJ. At least they use more than a laptop (and if you have watched how GT makes a mash up, it’s not even up to date anymore)…

Feed The Animals was not ‘good’.

I certainly disagree about Feed The Animals V.S. Night Ripper.
You say FTA is “too Black-ish”, but I actually found Night Ripper more deserving of that title.

Feed the Animals flows WAAAAAY better than Night Ripper, and is pretty much consistent with its entertainment value throughout.
Where as Night Ripper has little blips of Awesome, but most of it just doesn’t click with me, and every so often borders on annoying.

Hipsters try WAY too hard to prove their legitimacy when it comes to musical taste. Listen to what makes you feel good, what makes you move, not what your peers tell you to listen to.

If it annoys you, don’t listen. Just don’t try to impress everyone with your selective and underground musical taste, it just makes you look like whiney douche bags. Besides, you miss out on having a lot of fun with that stick shoved up your collective hipster ass.
