Authentic Disco: Big in 2k9

I feel like AUTHENTIC DISCO is the only ‘faggy dance music genre’ that every1 feels comfortable appreciating these days. Whether it’s the electro-bloghouse-authdisco act GLASS CANDY, or the P4kcore+authentic disco acts HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR or THE CHROMATICS–these acts can be legitimately appreciated by entry-level alts & 38 year old music critics for the same reasons.

I think people feel like they can appreciate authentic disco because it’s more meaningful than blog house/they think the ‘disco sound’ has had a relevant impact on society+music history. The thing about modern authentic disco is that I am not ‘blown away’ by it, but I am strangely drawn into aligning my personal brand with it.

It’s sort of like wearing a ‘retro’ jersey/baseball cap of a formerly authentic sports team to prove that you are a ‘real fan’ of what sports are ‘truly all about.’

Gregg Gillis will wear this retro hat from his hometown team in 2k10 when mainstreamers start to accuse him of being ‘too mainstream.’

I wonder if Fan Death will be considered authentic disco enough to start getting some m0re mainstream ‘web magazine’ coverage if Hercules and Love Affair stop generating enough tour dates to keep blurbing about.

FAN DEATH: if they make more songs, can HRO spend a whole month talking about how HOT they are?

Fan Death already has conceptual ‘web’ art, much like Crystal Castles’s faceless promo pix. Does ur startup myspace band have conceptual web media?

Don't get me wrong - they'd both get it - but I don't know that they're in the same group as Chromatics, H&LA, etc, simply based on well done strings. Have you though about making a site called Hipster Tug-Off for some of these pics? Because I'd go to it. For sure.

That song's just blog fodder, same as Cut Copy, sorry. There's a certain group of people that head for the hills when stuff like this comes around and it's the same group that hype Glass Candy, IDIB, etc. Even 8 years ago or so, there was Metro Area and other "authentic" disco acts (Maurice Fulton maybe? He might be too weird) that were referencing the sound and had this cult following that I think is feeding into the church of Italians Do It Better.

I don't know why - I saw Cut Copy and I have a million and one blog house tracks and never could get into it. I heard Chromatics "In the City" and the cover of "Ms. Broadway" by Glass Candy and I was instantly sold. Johnny Jewel and Mike Simonetti clearly know what they're doing though and maybe that's the why the "few pubes too old for a neon hoody" set like myself gravitate towards it.
