Pick Your Personal Brand Wisely

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post “Anti-Smoking Subliminal Public Service Ads for alt…”:

wearing a D.A.R.E. shirt is about as alt as wearing a “vote for the pedro” shirt
unfortunate personal branding choice!
:-(

Is it alright to burn my DARE shirt, or do I just give it to a thrift store and hope no1 re-purchases it?

I wonder if people still feel confident about their personal brand being lined up with Nappy Dynamite. Does wearing a Vote for Mexi shirt say ‘I saw Nappy Dynamite several years ago, and I am still proud to identify with the cutting edge quirky humor’?

Does n e 1 know where I can buy this t-shirt?

what’s worse: hearing “paper planes” at best buy, or hearing “d.a.n.c.e” at taco bell?

I just want 2 b authentic, wear authentic clothes, and shop+dine in authentic establishments. What can I do to ’stay ahead of the curve’ without feeling like mainstream entities r stealing my identity?

No self respecting Alt would step foot into wack ass Taco Bell. Unless they live in some cultureless small town in the mid west where Taco Bell is seen as real Mexican food

oh. Let D.A.N.C.E. and Paper Planes die. When your mom starts bumping it in her car, its time to let it go

    GET OVER IT Y’ALL!
We are just going to 2 have to come 2 grips with mainstrmrs co-opting our culture! I kno ya’ll hate to cede the ‘moral high ground’ 2 the mainstrmrs, but complaining about MIA and Justice achieving mainstream success is I.D.I.O.T.I.C., if you ask me. I don’t c U guys complaining about how whitey co-opted rock n’ roll, u bitchy hypocrites! Hipsters have been “stealing” afro-american “culture” (i.e., hip-hop) for years! Look at the fucking Kill Whitey movement! Look at fuckin’ Greg Gillins! Nobody gives him shit! I look 4ward to any of u putting forth a compelling case 2 the contrary, but I can’t believe that y’all actually believe that when WE do it it is O.K. while when OTHERS do it to us, it’s ‘unfair.’ We live in a cultural milieu, y’all, and the earlier u come 2 grips w/ it, the better off you’ll be. If u don’t want to listen to ppr planes or D.A.N.C.E. anymore, fine, but don’t bitch.

Oh yeah! Whites steal everything from African Americans! Whiteys are so uncreative, so unoriginal… That’s why Kanye sampled Daft Punk last year, and Greg Gillis invented mash ups and sampling, because 2manyDjs, aka Soulwax, hadn’t been doing it for a decade before him, and other people like Grandmaster Flash and Bambaatta hadn’t been sampling Kraftwerk…
Poor African Americans, they have to suffer from natural cultural exchange and never admit that they also like to take whitey’s shit…

    LOL @ anonymous, 3:51PM:

The point of my earlier post @ 3:06 PM wasn’t to decry whiteys’ “theft” of african-american culture, thanx. I was just trying 2 point out how hypocritical it is for whitey hipsters 2 complain that their “culture” has been stolen by whitey mnstreamers when hipsters IN GENERAL have no compunctions about appropriating other cultures @ random when it amuses them. I, for one, have no problems w/ caucasians appropriating rock n’ roll OR Greg Gillis playing mostly “blackish” music (As Carles said in his immortal criticism of Girl Talk’s “Feed The Animals”). The point I was trying to get at (as I explicity said) was that we live in a cultural milieu where EVERYTHING is constantly being appropriated by other socioeconomic groups. Complaining about ppr planes being played in Taco Bell is about as worthwhile (and a lil’ more foolish) as bitching about “whitey” “stealing” hip hop or rock n’ roll, a claim that YOU as a white hipster r obviously upset by. Noone is saying that white ppl are uncreative. Noone is saying that caucasians owe everything to african americans. As you’ve pointed out, cultural exchange goes BOTH ways (ex., Kanye). MY point was that bitching about whitey, or msnstreamers, or WHOEVER “appropriating” some1 else’s culture is hypocritical and dumb. Apparently, you misinterpreted me.

P.S.; Dan, can u b more constructive w/ ur criticism? I’d love 2 hear something INTELLIGENT from u EXPLAINING how I am wrong or my analysis is “tedious” otherwise, pls stfu kthnx =)
