Remember when the Arcade Fire changed the way we valued music?

I’d give anything to go back to the days when music was allowed to be meaningful.
I’d give anything to go back to the days when music was meant to inspire medium-sized clubs of people.
I’d give anything to go back to the days when I ‘just wanted a moderately cute+indie GF’, even if she was the ‘a little bit too chubby’ type who ‘coloured her hair’ and ‘took her trivial position at a college radio station seriously.’

I’d give anything to go back to the pre-Blog era and really just take a moment to ‘appreciate it.’ Back before there was ‘hipster’, and blog centuries before the ‘alts.’ We were just ourselves, searching for a way to represent our complex outlook on life.

I’d give anything to go back in time, and appreciate chorus-driven indie rock. The collective voices were the sound of my angsty soul that was unsure of my alternative future. They were calling out for a little bit of direction in an uncertain time. Would we ever find the authenticity that we were looking for?
Wake Up – The Arcade Fire

you can have those times again Carly, you just have to renounce your evil bloghouse ways.
meaningful indie rock, not bloops and bleeps. that is the path to righteousness and a sweet haircut.

    this post made me cry.

Irony/cynicism is the worst thing in the world.

Michel Gondry said it best: “I hate cynicism. I wipe it from me. I don’t like cynical people. I don’t like cynical movies. Cynicism is very easy. You don’t have to justify it. You don’t have to fight for it.”

    let’s all be heart-on-our-sleeves earnest in 2k9 k?

the arcade fire didn’t change the way we think about music.

you’re forgetting how wrong it was when you’d have all these triumphant indie rock bands pouncing through the most ecstatic over-emotionalized motions on stage with a crowd of people kind of nodding their heads a little, i don’t know, the disconnect between the band on stage and the audience was ridiculous.

ponytail from baltimore is pretty ecstatic, triumphant, meaningful, but it doesn’t come with the apocalyptic bullshit baggage that the 30-piece indie bands came with. the world is not ending, and we don’t have to constantly feel like it is for something to be meaningful.

I wish I’d been more serious about fucking chubby chix who took their radio shit seriously back when I was in college. Problem is, I am a a dude who weighs like 125 and doesn’t consider girls who aren’t also wiry and psychotic compatible with my personal brand. Still, I’ve heard good things about fat chick lips on Teh dixorz, so there was definiteley something that could have been fun there. (If I hadn’t had to be all authenticXcore about trying to get with more girls I was actually attracted to.) Yeah, I should’ve waited til 2k6 and used prior knowledge of the arcadefirez to get tugz from entry level alts who could appreciate the mystery inherent in my spazzcore dude/budding RyanAdamsAltbag personal brand. Problem is, that wouldn’t have been authentic… I just wanna be loved/tugged off for being me, ya’ll!

the question remains: who is carles?

Does he just try to enforce his personal brand by establishing him as a hipster who is “on top of it”?

Was Carles serious about this post?

Or was it again a comment on semi-alt-bags who never really got out of their closet?

Is it bad to think in terms of personal brands?

Is personal brand the same as personality?

@paul bocuse, It matters more who YOU think this “carles” is.

Arcade Fire sounds like someone gave Radiohead a fist full of Paxil; they are negligible, but apparently quintessential to Alt-dom. The band is either a fixed point of nostalgia for the author or the butt of a joke. Either way, thinking in terms of personal brands=cutting to the chase.

Having a personality v. a personal brand? Depends on how many conscious decisions you’re able to make. Personal brands are a result of meticulously manipulating your self-image. Personality is the stupid shit you happen to say while getting tuggz on top of some newspapers under an overpass or the way your signature looks when you sign your alimony checks.

We have perhaps all been guilty of elevating arcade fire beyond what should be reasonably expected of a band. They are a great band but they are NOT the only band. It’s quite serendipitous indeed when the alt community suddenly rallies around one band in massive force. Now it seems people are waiting around always hoping for the next big thing but never actually trying to find it. At a certain point the difference between a good band and a good band that is successful is the amount of work a band puts into it…. are you meeting these bands half way? Are you on the myspace constantly listening to your local musicians? Are you going to shows and SUPPORTING good bands by buying a CD or maybe just a beer? Are you recommending bands you believe in? There are great bands everywhere but it seems 95% of people going to shows just don’t give a shit. Why is that? Try giving a shit… at least thank the musicians and shake their hands if you see a good show. It doesn’t all happen in a vacuum. This is a unique time we live in… don’t take music for granted.

…but rly…it’s not that everything is terrible, it’s just that everything sounds so redundant.
