Suburbia: Big in 2k10?

My entire life has been focused on ‘moving to the city.’ I hear a lot of songs about ‘the city’ and see a lot of meaningful pictures of culture/daily life from ‘the city.’ Within ‘the city’ is a network of creative people and a thriving public transportation system. In the context of the city, doing even the most trivial things like ‘going to the store to buy groceries to prepare a meal’ is more meaningful than the exact same process in suburbia. (less fossil fuels)

The concept of ‘the city’ might be dead. Authentic Alts are ‘raging against the city’ because s0 many mainstreamers are ‘moving in’ (also a high cost of living). I am not sure what will be a more authentic place to live in the future: ‘the wilderness’ or ’suburbia.’

The Wilderness seems like you could ‘really chill out’ and listen to some AnCo. You can ‘be alone with your thoughts’ and just get kind of raw, unwired, and uncut.

But I feel like I could really tap into a lot of creative angst if I ‘lived in a place like suburbia.’ I could really reflect on the human experience, and how so many people will never ‘achieve happiness’ because they don’t ‘get’ how space/architecture has a direct impact on their lives’. There are just so many people around u ‘living the same life as u’ that u ‘get kinda down’ and feel ‘a lil bit meaningless.’

Where do yall think yall are going to move to?
Do yall know n e 1 who will take over my lease?

Carls, you are so funny. I think you should move to a cabin/forest lodge with only your Mac and some mushrooms. Then fly into major cities to free present powerpoints to major companies about ‘brand strategy’ and ‘consumer research/attack plans’. You will make so much dough that you can afford to own your cabin and make gourmet meals on the campfire. DO IT!

You rock my world with your simple Jane Jacobs comment.

The other posts were attempts to express their wittyness and make Carl giggle. With one name you made more sense than all of them.

I live in the wilderness and AnCo sounds great here. Being outside in the mountains is great. Black bears and moose visit me on my porch, and sometimes I see another person when I’m out hiking/mountain biking/snowboarding/snowmobiling. Outdoor/action sports are pretty authentic here, and I wear Sorel boots over my tight pants (cause there’s a lot of snow). I drive a pick up truck into the mountains to collect huckleberries and firewood. Sometimes I host indie/electro dance parties, but most people in the wilderness prefer singer songwriters Bob Marley/Jack Johnson/Ben Harper, or electronic acts like Bassnectar, and freaky dancehall music. I still get to blog/comment on blogs via my iPhone 3G, and spend time with my iMac. Thinking about moving to the city to network/find different work/finish my marketing degree/go to concerts instead of downloading live recordings from city people like Nyctaper. The wilderness is nice but you have to trade your public transit pass for a sled/ATV, and trade your fancy shoes for a pair of boots and a chainsaw. Oh, and the girls have a little more hair and ’spirituality’ in the wilderness

“The city of Austin will soon be home to a state-of-the art residential community which will be, upon completion, the first 5-star rated green development in the United States.

Fiore has been designed to maximize opportunities for open space living, thereby enhancing residents’ experience of community life. The development will also feature a unique destination within the neighborhood: a community-shared, 40-foot-wide, pedestrian lane and park around which all of the homes have been designed. The park features a community garden, playground, hike and bike trails and a hammock court.”

I lived two years in Mexico City and trust me, swimming upstream, fighting just to do the simplist things is not AUTHENTIC or even cool. It’s wasting time, energy, patience, and your very life.

Suburbia is sucessful because it’s logical and the people selected it, not that fuckhead AlGore, or some God Damned government wonk trying to tell you how to life.

I am reading this book right now called “Terminal Architecture” by Martin Pawley, a British guy who died (and was an archi-critic). He says, to paraphrase in an awful manner, that cities have been irreversibly wrecked by the car, and that this is a good thing. We have the internet, we don’t need urbano-alt-WmsbrgSPACE. The people that live in WmsbrgSPACE (Berlin is one of these) are tourists, transients, museum-goers and post-urbanites occupying places once held by industrial functions, which themselves are now DISTRIBUTED all around the countryside. Hence, terminal: these big boxes and faceless distribution centers and server farms and data centers are the real terminals which shunt us our food, energy, and information.

And then we have http://www.hotbush.com for everything else.
