SXSW: Authentic in 2k10?

When do events go from ‘being authentic’ to ‘being totes fake and filled with mainstreamers’?
I just want to know what ‘the tipping point’ is
and what causes it
so that I could prevent it from happening

SXSW is funnie
because everything is a ‘planned surprise’
and everything is ‘free’ but ‘not really’
and everything is ‘exciting’ but ‘predictable’
and everything is ‘viral buzz’ but rlly just ‘marketing’

Festivals and conferences start out ‘being authentic incubators of cool culture’
but then the mainstreamers think they can participate
immersing themselves in ‘cutting edge cultural events’
slowly causing the fabric of what made something great
2 unravel

Woodstock 99
SXSW 2010
Pitchfork Festival 2015
Lollapalooza 200_
Coachella 200_
Austin City Limits 2005

They say that once a Wireless Telecommunications Provider
is a prominent sponsor of your entity
then u have ‘made it’
but u will soon lose what once made u so great.

Everything has a ‘useful life’
Kinda sad abt that

sxsw felt a lil authentic at times this year around. howevs, there were a lot of mainstreamerz/losers, and a bro wearing a mstrkrft shirt at the mstrkrft show. am i still relevant? am i MORE relevant for attending sxsw?? was it authentic for explosions in the sky to have ACTUAL explosions in the sky [via fireworks] during their performance at the circus thing?

SXSW was really cool back in the late 90’s… now it basically just highlights, for those of you who didn’t know, how ‘alternative’ is actually mainstream.

I think that’s prob why people who live here in ATX don’t actually attend sxsw…. either that or it’s too damn expensive for just for a “chance” to see a good band.

Yeah, I wouldn’t pay attention if 1,500 bands flooded into my city for 4 days, either.

@Roz, That’s the sad part… Rachel Ray is going to/has brought out more mainstreamers than any single band.

@corydan, so true! I just stocked up on bottles of wine and jammed indie music via my living room, thinking about if I should go to SXSW or not… by the time I was done with all the bottles of wine and debating if I should go or not It was Sunday and I was too drunk to care, I realized that was WAY more alt of me.

CARLES, u r blogged about via print media in the latest issue of SPIN Mag. (under ’songs u must hear now!’) : “#2. Yeah Yeah Yeahs “Zero” – “Recast as the electro-rock stadium diva the Daft-Punk worshipping hipster-runoff nation so desperately needs, Karen O purrs: “get your leather on”. Uh, yes, ma’am”……low blow, coincidence, or affirmation of ur status as a genuine taste-maker??

@mstrcnt, sign that HRO is dead.
his self-promotion scheme has reached its logical conclusion.
i was flipping through my – ugh – Spin last night that All Pts West still spams me with when I ran across that and laughed.

has CRLS been mentioned in better mags like XLR8R?
    Urb?
    The P4K?

I know New York Mag and Village Voice wrote abt him.

all things considered this is the most on point summary of sxsw i’ve seen all year. i’ve gone 4 times and always get a little pissed if i can’t make it one year, then i saw what was going on this year and didn’t give a fuck.

@tf, So true… this is the funny part; all these bands always talk about how they had to play one show and then rush over to “super secret place” to play ANOTHER show. Why? Are there not already enough bands to not pay attention to when they play? It’s gotten so big that they need to have their own elite festival just to “see” everyone….who they don’t care about in the first place.

woah. you are way too layer-upon-layer for this reader. From someone who once cared as much as you guys seem to about not being a mainstreamer: it IS more fun to like things.
