I miss the days when being alt was meaningful.

miss the days that felt like this. felt special and authentic. feel like everything is so snarky these days. no1 is allowed 2 mean n e thing. no1 is allowed 2 ‘just live.’

All we evr fucking do is make fun of eachother/ourselves. Yall…we can’t do this forever. We can’t just make snark meme blogs bashing people for the rest of our lives’. There comes a time 2 ‘grow the fuck up’ and start trying 2 make the world better.

Just read this comment and made me feel all sad about what I am doing. Might need 2 change my tone.

Dear Carles

Fuck you.

I don’t know if you think that your blog is funny, relevant, ironic, post-modern, or any other asinine “hipster” buzzword, your blog boils down to the same old racist, misogynistic, hate spewing bullshit that has plagued America since its inception.

i mean, what the fuck, blipsters? yellow fever? this entire post?!?! we’re all different, we know. you dont have to sort us into whites and not whites, “bros” and not “bros”, heteronormatives and “gheis” or whatever the fuck you say.

our generation has been called the least motivated, and most privileged ever to have existed. We are living in an age where we are connected to each other like no other generation of humanity has been. you can interact with people across the planet NEARLY INSTANTANEOUSLY VIA SATELLITES THAT ORBIT THE FUCKING PLANET, AND ALL YOU HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE IS THE MOST VULGAR, DIVISIVE, AND (MOST DAMNINGLY) POINTLESS DRIBBLE THAT LEAKS OUT OF YOUR ID DOMINATED BRAIN.

you are an embarrassment to our generation, and if history remembers you (which I sure as fuck hope it doesn’t) it will be as the death knell of white heterosexual male hegemony.

and I don’t give a shit if you think this is Art. If this is the best art you can produce you might want to consider a different career, perhaps in the KKK.

you are only culturally relevant in the sense that you represent the puerile, emotionally stunted, intellectually repressed, and self absorbed America that cares more about listening to hip music and wearing cool clothes that what is happening in the world.

there is nothing wrong with hipsters being fashionable, having educations, or being artistic, as long as they are contributing something useful to our society.

but you carles are slime. you make nothing new, you just recycle old hatred, and draw lines of class and race and sexuality. you are what is wrong with hipsters. and you should be ashamed.

and fuck all of you commenters who encourage this bullshit. YOU SHOULD BE OUTRAGED. I will never buy anything from anyone who pays you to advertise.

either i or the commentator is totally off base. i always assumed hro was 90% satire and the best part was that you didn’t know which was the remaining 10%. or maybe the best part was feeling superior because you knew it was 9/1 and not 1/9….. that said, anytime anyone is throwin around the “r” word it’s probably a good time to reconsider how you allow yourself to be percieved. people are sensitive about that shit.

think sometimes when you carry on a brand of satire for so long it becomes almost sincere in itself. Kind of like the two dudes in Cat’s Cradle who start off posing as the “rebel” and the “dictator” and then actually become those roles. think that’s why some posts are a little uncomfortable. although perhaps that’s what you wanted.

anyways HRO is depressing lately. want more facetiousness.

I think that comment was spot on. It isn’t really your fault though. I mean this has been a long time in the coming. What are you trying to achieve? Where is the drive? Ambition? Progress? You have a voice. And with a voice comes responsibility. Be wise. Be inquisitive. Be new. Don’t become wrapped up in the bubble you made for yourself. We are all the same at the core. We all want the same things. Happiness. Heaven on earth.

    Change.

I also take everything you say as satire carles. You’re like Colbert (cole-bare), not Colbert (cole-bert). However, you do a lot of harm because you make certain elitists to feel more elite than other elitists. You are tremendously funny, but I wonder if you are achieving your goal. We can’t escape creating meaning, you know. It only makes us hurt inside trying not to. But don’t change, because you are still needed. Be happy. He’s wrong about many things including that you don’t create anything new. This blog is a work of genius. I don’t think you will achieve what you wish. But you shouldn’t stop a masterpiece before it’s finished in just the way you like.

of course he’s right. you are into separating a subculture along lines defined and perpetuated by a white, hegemonic system. blipsters, azns and all of that shit is really offensive and rude and so ‘othering’ to a subculture of people who are incredibly similar. This blog could be funny without your insights into race. so maybe it is time for a change of tone/for you to grow up and realize your blog is popular enough that what you say does have an effect on the way people think and therefore you need to be more responsible.

No. Carles’ blog is not needed. It’s funny, but it’s not something we need. It’s something we want. We want the AZN jokes. We want to feel ‘Authentic’ and free, but this juicy blog doesn’t give us anything that we haven’t already thought of. Carles, you lucky Sperm.

Maybe it’s not needed. Wanted is better. But it’s nice to have a dialectic discourse when it comes to blog culture. Carles plays his role. But “authenticity” is not the goal of this blog. It’s almost as if the writer is torn inside at his inability to escape meaning. It’s like he is keeping tabs on his own psychology as he accepts his own fate. Besides, my guess is that he is AZN himself. But that changes nothing. You are right.

i have to agree with some of the points of that, carles is indeed clasifying people all the time using therms that are not politically correct. but, wtf? he can be egocentrist but one point i recognize in him is he talks like a person, like a normal person (well, he’s a blogstar also so he’s a little too much arrogant sometimes, which i hate) but a fact is that he is free to talk the way he wants to, as all we do and i like very much that a large audience as he has got doesn’t change that. i see no point in argue that we should-act-as-if-we-were-all-exactly-equal-even-if-obviusly-we-are-not; people is black and they are they even if you call them black, or “afroamerican”, also are gheis, women, or whatsoever.
are we the most privileged generation and the mos apathic? could be, but who are we to judge that, we act and that is all, or we don’t, cause the action, as the inmovility must be deserved.
as to the point that says “useful to society”, pfffffff

wow. i am a relatively new reader of this blog (5 months) and when i saw @Orion’s original post i thought it was perfect and it made me question the long-term value of persistent irreverence/irony/satire… your “hipster grifter” post was in poor taste (and not in the fun, edgy, “let’s shake this system up” kinda way)… but the truth of the matter is something akin to that feeling when you have laughed for a really long time and you are starting to come down from in; you’re trying to catch your breath and there is that lagging/unreal feeling (like your consciousness is momentarily a computer from 1994).

then again this is the postmodern reality we were given, you are just playing the system against itself… all in all, what i want to say is this:

i don’t know you. i don’t judge you. but reading your blog regularly, coupled with the reading of @Orion’s post and your above post… it made me feel genuinely hopeful and upbeat. congratulations on being a big enough person to look yourself in the eye… not just because someone called you out… but because it needs to be done periodically (just like revolution in a society). ((as a side note it makes me feel happy in the same way that Kanye West’s whole reaction to his South Park trashing))… it is good that we not shit ourselves. i agree with many on this comment board that a) you should not feel so down b) you should examine the possibilities of changing yr ‘tone’ c) the world needs savvy people with a voice to clean up the cluster fuck that is our current collective mind. thanks. i’ll be reading!

@DrGonzoAlt, Coming to the comment boards of Hipster Runoff and complaining about the politically incorrect language is like going to an evangelist’s website and bitching about the pro-Christian bias; you should know what you’re getting when you come here.

Please do yourself and your stress levels a favor, and admit that that language, coupled with the viciously irreverent satirical attitude, are probably the two biggest reasons why we’re all here in the first place. If you don’t like it, go read another blog.

P.S. I think it’s hilariously telling that you reference Pynchon’s shortest and most widely-read book, and find it pretty delicious evidence of your middling intellectual taste. Couldn’t make it past page 50 in Gravity’s Rainbow, huh? That’s okay, we forgive you. Maybe just go back to the Vonnegut and the Palahniuk and just more of the type of stuff at your grade level, okay? I promise we won’t think less of you than we already do.

HRO/Carles/Commenters summed up in one exquisite quote from the late DFW bro.

“And make no mistake: irony tyrannizes us. The reason why our pervasive cultural irony is at once so powerful and so unsatisfying is that an ironist is impossible to pin down. All U.S. irony is based on an implicit “I don’t really mean what I’m saying.” So what does irony as a cultural norm mean to say? That it’s impossible to mean what you say? That maybe it’s too bad it’s impossible, but wake up and smell the coffee already? Most likely, I think, today’s irony ends up saying: “How totally banal of you to ask what I really mean.”

why can’t we just mean something? Really irony and this blog just end up taking meaning out of life. We’re so ironic that we don’t mean anything that we say and why can’t we just be sincere?

@Ja3on, the postmodern age, irony is impossible since irony plays on the frission/tension/contradiction between representation (what we say) and reality (the world). But what happens when we lose all touch with reality in our hypermediated “world” of pure simulation?

At the very most HRO is self-ironizing, because because it exists primarily at the level of representation and is not so interested in reflecting or commenting on “reality.” In this sense, Carles is quite “sincere” in most of what he says. He merely pretends to be ironic, in the way that a youngster might pretend to be grown-up and sophisticated in the presence of other adults.

HRO resonates with other readers because they, too, live mostly at the level of representation, and feel a certain nostalgia for bygone ironic days, when “meaning” was still possible.

Welcome to the desert of the hipster runoff.

@Jean B., Again the “hyper mediated world of pure simulation” is a matter of perspective and not a fact. Mostly there happens to be a lot of projection going on here in regard to what Carles writes, you take meaningless drivel and expound upon it adding layers of meaning that ARE NOT THERE to begin with in some sort of personal intellectual vanity to prove your the shit or something on a website that uses text speak. I am sure your professor will be mightily impressed

@Jean B., It’s quite the contrary…. most people NEVER say what they really mean. Irony can be used to reveal truths that most people dare not speak of. Most of communication is in body language anyway. It also helps us weed out people we would rather not communicate with since they don’t ‘get it’. The only problem is that it an be hard to transmit over the interwebs.

I’m going to break my normal nimwit HRO character and say that I actually agree with you. I thought racism was believing races to be inferior simply because of bigotry and their aesthetic appearance. Carles, even as a satirical character, does not believe “blipsters” or AZNs to be worthy of social inferiority; he is simply making fun of the cultural stereotypes we attach with our catch-phrases. There is a difference, in my opinion, between stereotyping and racism.

@teh, We’ve probably become way too afraid of racism. I think it makes white people act even whiter around minorities. Like seriously… someone needs to put out a damn etiquette book about how were are supposed to act around minorities while still being “with it”…. either that or we’re just not allowed to. I actually skipped out on a hardcore show tonight because a rap band was playing. Now hardcore isn’t my thing as it is but some of those guys are really interesting. I just have no fuckin clue about how I’m supposed to act without feeling horribly awkward. Maybe it’s the whole scene kid attitude at these shows where you are supposed to put on your whole persona before you walk through the door.

Think u like normal but slightly alt stuff like authentic pizza (via real mozeralla) and the simpsons and that when you first heard the ANCO song Banshee Beat u felt authentically good. Think HRO is satire. Think you’re even being satirical now, making fun of Orionbro by pretending to take his misguided earnestness at ‘face value.’ But think u wouldn’t have even posted a post if u didn’t feel like his screed had a little creedence (clearwater revives). N that sometimes ur so caught up in the irony of yr satirical persona that u start to question yr own intentions yo. Liek maybe u would be better srving the world/yrself if u were creating authentic content/memes rather than satirical memes. Like songs/short stories/improv comedy/lattes. But u should kno that ur satire/social commentary memes are unique enough that they become authentic original content. It’s like maybe Colbertbro or Stewartbro or whoever sometimes wishes they played acoustic guitar or something “real,” but they know in the end they’re doing what they were meant to. Hope u kno that 2 Carles. <3 HRO. <3 Orionbro too cuz his earnest outrage is authentic.

i think that it doesn’t make sense to try to edit something like this for some invisible standard; to the extent that it is satire or not satire, it is a distillation of a cultural phenomena, which won’t go away just by making the blogger stop writing. these issues of an increasingly multicultural situation shouldn’t be ignored; there are real tensions between urban areas and suburban ones, and ethnic groups, that wont go away by calling anyone racist. maybe carles is being ironic, maybe not, but either way there’s an extent to which we can understand a segment of the US culture today via his writing, and therefore it’s valuable as such, as a cultural document. I don’t feel like this project is intended to show the individual behind it except in a slight, unintentional way, and that’s not up to the reader- in reading, you accept that you don’t make the rules. While some posts are more enlightening than others, the blog’s still very readable. I find orion’s remarks to be extremely naive- he holds up some imaginary ideal situation of multiculturalism (what does it mean, precisely? is it possible to using the english language, conduct a society that’s not scarred by the historical legacy of anglosaxon male dominance? the whole american society is structured upon these economic lines, and doesnt seem to be changing in that respect, only homogenizing/integrating other ethnic groups etc into the broader anglosaxon male vision of the world, which doesnt necessarily seem like a success). basically I think orion’s remarks are halfbaked, it doesn’t seem that he knows what he is attacking- reminds me of the political discourse of kids in a small college town with little exposure to urban life. i’m not at all thereby implying that racial discrimination is reasonable, only that to be outraged by a term like ‘blipster’ is a bit much. In fact, I think that to the extent that there’s a difference between carles’ posts on asians and, say, the recent issue of the economist, it is that A, carles isn’t a hugely influential publication and B, carles is at least perhaps sarcastic. It’s unfair to attack a satirist for the fact that he is reflecting the society he operates within; in fact, this is the goal of satire, no?

@anonymous, Hey, seriously, thanks for letting us know before you left. I would have probably kept reading the site like normal, and then in one or two weeks been like, “man, where’s anonymous lately? I haven’t seen any of his comments on here in a while. I wonder if he’s all right…”

Instead, you saved me the worry, and I won’t have to call one of your neighbors or your parents to go check on you at your apartment. You’re so thoughtful; I’m grateful we’ve been able to be friends for so long.

I remember the first day we met. You remember that? We were at that concert. I saw you standing with your boyfriend at the bar, and I turned to Brian, who drove me there that night, and I was like, “Dude. Dude. Who is *that* over there?” And he goes, “Oh, anonymous? You’ve never met him before? He’s at shows like all the time.” And I was like, “Yeah, he does look familiar, I just don’t think I ever really noticed him. It’s like, you know when you see someone, but you don’t really look at them because you’re with other people, and there’s just no particular social impetus for interacting with them?” And Brian said, “Yeah, I know exactly what you’re talking about. That’s how it was before me and Elissa started hanging out last year. I kept seeing her at parties, and a couple times at the bar next to our place, and, you know, just like you were saying, I noticed her, but I didn’t really pay any attention to her. That’s so weird.”

    a few notes
‘our generation has been called the least motivated, and most privileged ever to have existed.’
-does anyone agree with this? I certainly don’t. for starters, it takes the dominant assumption that technological improvement is necessarily ‘privilege;’ however, we aren’t sufficiently privileged to be able to live in the place our ancestors are from, not work incessantly, or eat food we grew ourselves.
as to least motivated, speak for yourself.
remarks like these make me think the writer is somehow alluding to the 1960s… what did this time period accomplish, really? it’s true that racist legislation was dismantled, but not in its entirety. I think that the election of Obama itself, in the narrowly political paradigm being referred to, eclipses that time period. Meanwhile the profusion of cultural forms that characterizes the present time seems to negate the commentor’s pessimism…
‘of course he’s right. you are into separating a subculture along lines defined and perpetuated by a white, hegemonic system. blipsters, azns and all of that shit is really offensive and rude and so ‘othering’ to a subculture of people who are incredibly similar.’
are people so incredibly similar? I don’t think so, it’s a pretty depressing vision. It seems to me that the main reason this blog/our sphere of culture fixates on the metropolis is for the frisson of encountering the other and being thus expanded- and I certainly think that cultural groups such as ‘afroamericans’ or ‘asian americans’ have distinct features that make these terms, or jargon to stand in for them, relevant and usable.
‘irony is based on an implicit “I don’t really mean what I’m saying.” So what does irony as a cultural norm mean to say? That it’s impossible to mean what you say? That maybe it’s too bad it’s impossible, but wake up and smell the coffee already? Most likely, I think, today’s irony ends up saying: “How totally banal of you to ask what I really mean.”
what about the collapse of meaning, or a deep ambivalence? One can’t possibly expect that the writer would have independently been able to comprehend the meaning of demographic change in the USA today- thats not his goal in any case. To me, while irony is used occasionally, the most powerful/useful work carles has done shows an ambivalence/reflectiveness deliberately translated into a low-culture dialect that is trying to simultaneously reflect his own feelings, and those of others around him- if irony reflects a clear cut negation of meaning, then it doesn’t seem like a usable term in the relatively more complex situation created by this blog. In fact, meaning has fractured into a relationship between writer, readers, the greater sphere of hipsters in NYC, and to a certain extent americans (and even other english speakers in other countries) who, instead of proclaiming already decided opinions, are trying to work through these issues- often, for example, carles uses the literary device of rhetorical questions- so i don’t think the term irony is sufficiently broad to describe the intent of carles literary style.

What is the problem with noting our differences? Is it bad to realize that we are all our own person? I am black. I am white. I am Asian. I am ME. And there should be no hard feelings about a blogger realizing this.

If people cannot understand how we are alike by being different, they may as well retract into their grey lives. Is there is real problem with distinguishing peoples characteristics?

If people can’t even talk about things like this, how can they even live with them?

    @pajamarama,

In today’s culture, I feel like we have become, in some ways, overly sensitive to racism; that is, we try to pretend like there is no difference or heritage in anyone for the sake of not offending anyone. Through our pretending, we start to pretend like we are all the same clone of an African biped monkey. Which we would be if DNA didn’t mutate occasionally.

It is a over-twisted humanist perspective, and it causes others to uncoil with ironic hatred whenever any cultural distinction is noted, or satirized.

Though, I don’t really believe this is society’s fault; language itself creates words that are “loaded” with pre-defined meaning. This is why political correctness exists; we often feel the need to refresh words with a clean slate of meaning. Others, having loaded pre-defined meaning into words, often make assumptions about an author’s intent when using certain words.

Emotion drives actions above rationality, and as a result, we often assume anyone noting someone as Asian is making stereotypical assumptions about them. Which they may be. But many times, they aren’t.

Okay, I’m getting off my soapbox now. I realize I just keep talking and I’m not really making a point.

i guess ill add to this wall of love. when i first started reading your blog i was kind of horrified at all the bitchy comments people made about your blog/about each other. kind of reminded me of those old forum days. i think that while it’s only insults over the internet, it’s still very hurtful to be on the recieving end. you are only trying to put yourself out there, and people like that dude are kinda jealous of your (fame?) or are just angry at the world. it’s really low to put down someone over the internet. it’s probably the most cowardly way you could confront someone.

For the ‘germ’ who wrote the hateful comment to our belov’d <3CRLS.
Grow up, you are obviously ignorant to the fact that ‘this’, like mentioned above, is completely (~90%) satirical. Satire is what has led to some of the finest works of literature to be produced, and fashioned around. Therefore, not only are you criticizing <3CRLS, you are unintelligibly insulting centuries of social commentary and social normality. YOU TWAT.

Of course we are all different, THAT’S WHY <3CRLS segregates us into sub-categories. It is meant to be ‘grossly’ satirical, with vulgar references to sexuality, fashion, and life in general. It is meant to entertain, spark imagination, and stimulate your social life.

If you read this blog and take it seriously, there are a few things you can consider:
    A) Grow a pair (of ‘bawlz’, or ‘altTits’ whichever pertains to your gender) and read this with a comedic sense of mind.
    B) If you disapprove of a message being conveyed, STFU and go read censored public media in your local township.
    C) Repeat steps A-B until you have succesfully transformed from a ‘cunt’ into an American who has the right to speak his/her mind in whatever form deemed legitimate.

    Thanks for y’alls time, PCE.

You should do more editing down. What really is your present raison d’etre for this blog? Racial slurs have diminishing returns in satire as others have pointed out. I am more interested in you trying on the “true story” genre, the hypernostolgic take on electro, or “your band is a meme.” Your best posts dissolve the worst of internet 2.0/meta/viral blog/hipster fluff and remind us that we are still better off returning back to the real world.

Be happy that for the first time the comment section is mostly in complete sentences.

YO. I’ve never really paid attn to this blog until recently. Trust me, this shit still serves its ‘purpose.’

Honestly, this paragraph of Orion’s makes it obvious dude’s a fuckin self-righteous, no-life maroon:

“you are only culturally relevant in the sense that you represent the puerile, emotionally stunted, intellectually repressed, and self absorbed America that cares more about listening to hip music and wearing cool clothes that what is happening in the world.”

Dude needs to scratch the fuckin’ surface or just ignore you (but you know s/he’s gonna read all these comments).
You bring the altFun, altRooftop-philosophizing, altAlt, meta-meta-meta (quasi meaningful nonsense on my part) in a way that doesn’t even merit describing, attacking, or defending. Like, why can’t we just sit down shit up and watch (or don’t watch)?

But people speak up and show their love because bits and pieces of it (or all of it, who the fuck knows) hit the right buttons sometimes. It’s hard to pull something off with just the right amount of self-reference, narcissicm, deprecation, “or any other asinine ‘hipster’ buzzword.” You do it in a way that is uniquely your own, and we appreciate it for what it is. WOW, someone doesn’t like it? Someone wishes you would take this more seriously? Fuck off and DIY. And die.

Im almost 99 % sure that HRO is either a sociological/psychological experiment, or has become become one sometime in the past when Carles realized that every single person who posts on here would probably die and go to hell just to find out what he is thinking when he writes this. Who gives a fuck if he’s being irresponsible with his blog, Durkheim said that deviance in society actually helps create structure, it helps label deviance, and gives the world an example of what not to do. So what the fuck, Carles could become all responsible and shit with his blog. Or he could just do whatever the fuck he wants, Society doesnt change becuase of one person, it only becomes more concrete. ignore these stupid fucks who actually think giving a shit about things will “save the world:” :ie. GIVE US MORE CARLES (Via stereotypes and hilarious posts and meaningful deep irony.)

@anon, There is no deviance as long as you are a moral person… but even the meaning of morality is up for debate….social norms are an artificial construct and have no meaning other than what a society deems them to have. That doesn’t make anything specifically right or wrong and certainly say anything about ones freedom of expression.

    Hey Carles,

I accidentally typed in the address of your website into my web browser the other day and hit enter. I proceeded to accidentally read one of your posts and decipher where I thought you were being “satirical” and where you were insincerely using “quotation” marks to cover up “racism/sexism/XXXism”. I had to comment to say how much I hate you because “there is nothing wrong with hipsters being fashionable, having educations, or being artistic, as long as they are contributing something useful to our society.”

Just wanted to say that I’m “totes” offended because I went to your website and read your “thoughts” on your “blog.” I may or may not be a hipster, but I felt that “they” needed to be defended.

carles perpetuates privilege simply because he is uncapable of producing new knowledge, that’s the fact. Until he can do that (wich i doubt, considering he takes his education from bussiness classes and is very ignorant to music and art) things will remain the same. And the fact that half of his commenters continue to spew garbage such as “I feel like we have become, in some ways, overly sensitive to racism” showcases not only his failure to critically evaluate social tensions within the urban subgroups he draws inspiration from, but his incompetence to inspire others, instead he reassures the most reactionary segments of his readership the right to remain exactly the same.

First off – this is the most academic laden, undergraduate/post-graduate post slash commented piece that has ever been writen on this site. bravo. or something.

if that was a real comment: that kid needs to grow up and get outside of their 2nd year university understanding of Gramsci.

carles this blog acheives a lot of whatever it set out to do – which i think is satire and that is totally awesome. i’m going into my masters in some media/culturalstudies/commstudies thing and like, whatever. it allows me to reflect on my own life through a very twisted, but very perceptive view of the world. and there is not a damn thing wrong with that.

for anybody that think this blog is somehow racist, please, it’s not more racist (via literary devices) than some stand-up comedy act.

it certainly creates a space to be critical for the reader if they are at the level of intellecutal maturity – and that’s great.

Hey guys, i just learned this cool word in 9th grade Advanced english class. Not sure how 2 use it in a sentence tho. Maybe some1 can help me??

    subvert- (sub-vert) v. [subversive-adj]
    1. To destroy completely; ruin
    2. To undermine the character, morals, or allegiance of; corrupt.
    3. To overthrow completely

This is how I would use it in a sentence, plz correct me if I’m wrong :? But just so u know…..I am an A+ student…

“HRO is subversive. It is intended to subvert the apathy, racism, and self-absorption that is perceived to characterize contemporary counterculture.”
