When my boss walked by, I was like you don't even get me. Then I got fired, and now I can't watch anco vids anymore. and now all i can do is sit around and wonder whether the mainstream gets "better"/ more authentic when its infiltrated by conceptualcore or "indie" music gets worse when it folds into the mainstream :(

when animal collective played the late show with david letterman on may 7 2009, i was only eleven years old. the first electric lanterns had just been installed into my town's main streets only a week previous, and i was walking with my mother across the moor towards the new row of lights in the distance. night had only just fallen and i could still make out the outlines of the trees in the forest we had just left behind. my mother was holding my hand, and the pressure from her grasp matched the pressing of my shoes against my toes. startled by a sudden realisation, i let go of her hand. for the first time i really felt that i was my body, and that my body would always have to change. for the first time i wondered what it meant that i have the same hands i have always had, but that they now felt completely different from before.

When I first heard about AnCo playing David Letterman on 5/7/09, I was 15 years old. My first period English class had just wrapped up and my principal came on the intercom with some breaking news. "Animal Collective played on David Letterman last night yall! It is believed that we finally made it!"
I remember that I began to tremble as the bell then sounded for the period to end. Luckily I had the second period off, because the excitement caused me to have to take a 30 minute nervous shit. When I finally emerged from the bathroom, I saw my friend John chilling with his hoodie hood over his head. He was like "I bet a bunch of anarchists planned this." And we talked for the rest of the period about how life was going to change and how society would never be the same since experimental music finally 'worked' in the mainstream.
For the remainder of the day, we just watched replays of the Letterman performance and other AnCo videos in all of my classes. I remember my especially knowledgeable history teacher drew a diagram on the board about what was going to happen to the economy/sense of nationalism in the post-event world. I remember saying "I kinda thought Rufaat [dude in my French II class] was awesome and experimental, but now I like him even more now that he reminds me of Avey Tare and his performance with the Animals the last night".
I spent the bus ride listening to Krayzie Bone's "Paper" over and over again on my CD player because the minute long 'intro' where he repeated "The world the world is very different now" got me so pumped. It was indeed changed. As we got onto the Interstate and the skyline of my city was in perfect view, I wondered how I would be acting if AnCO had played Letterman in MY OWN city. Damn.
When I got home, my mom had some photo albums out. She was looking at pics from our trip to NYC when I was 8. Mainly the ones of how people were dressed and behaving in the city. She said "It's so interesting to have these pics now - like we'll always remember seeing these landmarks when they weren't surrounded by people in 'geologist headgear' and MPP 'illusion' wear. Damn."
I couldn't even do my homework. Just spent the entire day tweeting and responding to message board posts.
It was indeed a special day. Feels great to answer this question. It's something that I ask each potential girlfriend when we start dating, and it always leads to a meaningful conversation about the event. Feel closer to them. Like I feel closer to yall now. <3 u CRLS. <3 u HRO. <3 u AnCo.
