Last night, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship, and people in Los Angeles decided 2 use it as an excuse to ‘riot.’ However, it doesn’t seem like it is an authentic riot–like one out of rage. I think the bros who were ‘rioting’ seem to have just used it as an excuse to ‘fuck shit up’ and possibly ‘break into some specialized boutique stores in a gentrified part of town.’
I wonder if these bros are sneaker freaks–bros who read street fashion + urban wear blogs in search of ‘the next big shoe.’ Wonder if there was some shoe that they were looking to specifically steal, like ‘the new Kobes’ or ‘the new LeBrons’ or ‘the new Kanyes.’
Wonder if this car is transporting some sneakers or something.

Wonder if riot pix are the new partie pix [via Iran].

Seems like a chill ass street festival with arts+crafts/community bonding.
Went to the website of the store that got looted and got this message.

Wonder if they have ‘riot’/'black ppl’ insurance.
Does this picture ‘offend u’ since they are so proud of rioting/using their iPhone and uploading the pic to twitpic?

Feel sad that this white woman rioted so hard.

Have yall ever rocked a car full of AZNs?

Sad that my mom’s minivan broke down in the middle of the riots.

Think this is a metaphor 4 ‘being overhyped’

Might start an ebay business.

I think that there have been previous times in history where riots were ‘authentic’ [via OJ Simpson trial + Rodney King heightened racial tensions], or when looting was justified [via Katrina], but I can’t help but think that these were ‘acts of greed’/'dumb ppl who value ‘kewl shit’ too much.’
Not sure who to ‘blame.’ Maybe the NBA for creating so many brands that people want to identify with. Maybe a racial group of people. Maybe ‘the media’. Maybe ‘the Los Angeles Public Education System.’ Possibly Nike / Phil Knight.
Have u ever rioted/used ‘fake rioting’ as an excuse 2 steal shit?
Do ’sneaker heads/freaks’ value shoes too much?
Should we just ‘blame this on black people’ like other ‘dark moments’ in American history?
Is Los Angeles ‘the worst city in America’?
Do u h8 the Lakers?

Do u wish Kobe Bryant was still in jail 4 ‘raping’ that girl in Colorado instead of becoming the most marketable bro in the NBA?
Previous rioting 4 the sake of stealing kewl shit memes

Worried about the world. Worried about ‘consumerism’ being evil.

(This is a metaphor)

why are you talking about shtty sports like basketball, carles? I thought you declared watching sports as a mnstrmr activity. btw, who gives a fuck about the lakers?

Seriously? Yes this sucks. But remember Boston last year? Same thing. And the fact that you focus on just the “African Americans” is questionable. What about the Whites and clearly scores of Latinos rioting?
Does this give Los Angeles a bad name, sadly in some eyes yes, but to me, this and the riots in Boston last year when the Celtics won, and the countless times where douchebags reigned supreme, it gives us as humans a bad name.
I feel sorry for the business owners and residents of those neighborhoods, and I’m upset at these idiots for being so foolish and messing with my city, but I am even more frustrated with those who will generalize blacks and Latinos or even the fine city of Los Angeles.
Black people insurance? Sad.

Sad but true, I live in the South and I know, the biggest racists are the liberal, “socially conscious”, and upper-middle/upper class white Americans. But it’s always fun to pick on Blue collar whites for being ignorant, right? P.S. I’m black.

Your excessive use of the word “bros” is unwarranted and limited in your use of its meaning. I think that your intention was not to exploit a demographic and to speak of this riotous behavior in a way that is confined to one group of people, but your approach has been one of apparent ignorance towards a sense of community—untethered to the bounds of cultural misinterpretation. With your superfluous use of the word “bro” (whatever reasoning is present), it just reads very, unintelligently and has quite the uncultured, juvenile voice. Perhaps, I am wrong and your use of the word “bro” or brother is in reference to comradeship or a common union—like most obviously in this sense, the Lakers. The term brother, today, as with most words has lost its intended use, and I just find it ironic that your review of this event is littered with it–considering it is in support of racial equality, free from blame-placing and the scapegoating of a speculated wasteful and barbaric black community. And to limit the riot to sneaker theft is, also, quite uninformed. Perhaps, you should have titled this “Keep our feet and streets clean—free from the burden, that is the black community”, because you failed in capturing your goal and a title as blatant and ridiculous as that would have matched the subtle disapproval you may share towards “bros” and the crimes they create. I should give you an award for the fastest I have been lead away from the crux of a story and mislead into an unfavorable read. Use a word that is less demeaning and is not directly aimed towards those you are “supporting”, and then maybe this article would not have been a poor display of youth-oriented journalism.

@Matthew, the only thing poorly written, in regards to this article, is your comment. It is absolute nonsense, and a weak attempt at sounding intelligent, by using big words, and poorly connected sentences and thoughts. I suggest you practice up with your grammar, or avoid writing in the future.

@Matthew,
I was interested to read your comment, because I could tell that you had something serious to say, but your writing style was unnecessarily complicated and confusing. Also I think you missed the whole point of the post and took it way to seriously.
Carles uses the word ‘bro’ in practically every post referring to all racial groups.

This entire post is incredibly offensive. While I can understand your attempt at humor, it’s failed miserably. You seem to want to tokenize and mock a section of black/hip-hop/urban culture, while veiling it under the notion that riots like this are rare and far in between and therefore deserve the attention you’re giving them. Is stealing shit from stores right? Fuck no. Are some of these people idiots? Yes. But how many fucking times do people like this take to the streets and light shit on fire because their team won/lost?
It’s ok if you don’t like basketball, not everybody does or should. But it becomes a problem when you start to define a sport based off a select group of its fans (that so happen to be black)- and you in turn harbor some prejudiced feelings about them (these “bros” you speak off). What the fuck is “black ppl insurance”??????? Where’s my white ppl insurance? God knows I should be compensated for all the ignorant shit I put up with from people like you. Aaarrghhhh, you’ve ruined my fucking rosy mood. One step forward, a hundred back.

@tookewltobehip,
you make me feel guilty for not being offended by this. I guess it’s easy to blow off humor like this, when it isn’t directed toward my own culture. Its easy to just think of it as being completely ridiculous and as a mock of ‘racism’ rather than thinking of this as being what Carles truly believes. But really there has to be some part of carles that feels this way or he wouldn’t write it, and there has to be some part of me that feels this way too, or I wouldn’t find it funny.
But seriously, Carles makes fun of white culture in the majority of his blog and I am not offended by it.

@anonymous,
he makes fun of some segments of ‘white culture’ and some segments of ‘black culture’.
life is too short for me to think about this any longer.
Is this post racist? probs not.
Have I been reading HRO so long that I now find ‘offensive shit’ not so offensive?
Or are ppl just becoming ’sensitive douchebags’ . I’m guessing the latter. Read more than one post, Carles blogs like an ‘opinionated, privileged, ignorant jackass’ every day.
Besides yall, riots are fun. Of course I don’t speak from personal experience because I live in Canada and we prefer ’sit-ins’ and non-violent protest. Also Toronto sports teams are a not-so-secret source of ‘national fucking embarrassment’.
