Listening to Spoon, reflecting on my indie past…

[MP3]
Spoon Got Nuffin

I am listening to the band Spoon. They have a new song, and I think that it ’sounds very good’, but I think for the most part they have ‘always sounded very good.’ I feel like Spoon is a band from ‘a long time ago’–like back when teens at the turn of the century were ‘deciding to be indie’, they often used SPOON as a goto band for ‘connecting with 1 another.’

Since then, I think Spoon has ‘consistently released a quality product’, because I think they are ‘good musicians/producers’ and I think that the lead singer bro has ‘an authentic voice.’ For a while, I think I would have called people who like Spoon ‘entry level alts’, or possibly ‘mainstreamers who like maltstream products’, but now I think I will just start listening to songs like this, and reflecting on my past. Just don’t have enough time on this Earth to h8 on people just because they like bands that a product that ‘can appeal 2 any 1.’ [via the MGMT theory]

Think I’ve really grown up a lot, and my taste has really evolved into something very authentic, if I am willing to consider ’shitting upon’ Spoon just bc they have ‘been around for like 100 blog years.’

when i started going out i got the opportunity to witness the last days of indie, so at 12 i was twee like someone above, very into b&s, teenage fanclub, catatonia, etc, i even went mod for a sec via the zombies. then irony exploded (via 2001 barcelona) and i went 80s with lene lovich and les rita mitsuoko like everyone else. I ditched that and went 90s coz i felt i’d do better at it… soo afghan wigs, guided by voices and the like. I got tired and decided to listen to favourites only. I’m digging country now tho, feel like its authentic.

@fernando, growing up in a small town of less than 1k whites, i always associated country with alcoholism, nascar, racism, sexism, trailer parks, divorce, loneliness, economic decline, poverty, tractors, cows, faux cowboys, and short fat men line dancing. then when my bathroom stereo died, the one that used to blare my vintage indie mix cds while i showered, I bought a 5 dollar waterproof, shower radio and listened to my lil hamlet’s country radio station.

there’s no irony. there’s lots of heartbreak, horny hicks, gawd, and redemption. it’s soo authentic.

kinda think the modest mice might be ntry lvl country for entitled, privileged, narcissistic, self-loathing millennials like me born after or during the fall of communism.

@baberaham linkin, Ben Folds was never indie; Folds is “alternative” (mainstream), a place indie rockers never want to go (unless if they think selling out is authentic). The other choices are accurate, though some today would be considered entry-level alt.

    Vintage Indie (in chronological order).

    The Modern Lovers
    Galaxie 500
    The Vaselines
Luna (Dean Wareham was the definitive late 80s/90s altBro)
    Yo La Tengo
    Beck
    Elliot Smith
    Fleet Foxes

Listening to 70s pop music (Boz Scaggs, Bee Gees, Cheap Trick) is an immensely authentic experience (given it is intertwined with indie rock).

I’m certain ‘Entry-level indie’ for most ‘alt-bros’/'alt-chicks’ was The O.C. Mix 1 ‘c.d.’ [via The O.C.] Spoon were on it [via The Way We Get By]. As were The Dandy Warhols [via 'We Used To Be Friends']. You can act like you are ‘too cool to admit you watched The O.C.’ but all of us listen to ‘indie bands’ because of it.
