Is it ’socially unacceptable’ for a black person to have a Weezer tattoo?

I recently saw this picture of an African American with a ‘=w=’ tattoo, and wondered if it was ‘natural.’ I am not a racist–I believe that you are entitled to listen to the type of music that you want, no matter what your skin colour is–but I just couldn’t help but wonder if it was difficult for an African American to get a tattoo of a band that means so much to so many white indie fans. I feel confused about this tattoo. Wish I knew the ‘back story.’ Wonder if the tattoo belongs to an 18 year old who ‘fell in love’ with the song ‘Island in the Sun’ when it first came out, or if she was into ‘the Blue Album’ or something.

It seems like this African American could experience ‘backlash’ from her friends and family for getting this tattoo. Like she would show her extended family her tattoo, then they would make her play Weezer. Then all of her family would ‘make fun of her’ for ‘being too white’, making her feel guilty for breaking away from traditional African American interests and tastes. I feel like it would be ‘more acceptable’ for a white person to get a ‘hip hop tattoo.’ I feel like they would experience less backlash within their social circles. It seems ‘unfair.’

Are yall tired of all of the racial double standards that exist within racial groups?
Is it harder 2 be ‘black’ or ‘white’?
Do u know any altAfricanAmericans whose family ‘makes them feel bad’ for ‘being too white’?
Should black people be able to ‘truly empathize’ with the lyrics of Rivers Cuomo?
Does have a =w= tatty make u a ‘blipster’, or an inauthentic AfroAmerican?

    @Sociolog,

    AGREE;

    concerning your ‘black girl with a weezer tattoo;’ what makes you think she is incapable of appreciating and understanding ‘weezer?’ how do you know whether or not she grew up in a ‘poor black neighborhood’ like youre condescendingly stereotyping her to be… hmm. She couldve grown up in a suburb like you seem to be from where everyone is growing up to be different fro what youre making her out to be.

    Okay Carles you are a fucked up person. Do you know how hard it is to be black and not be ghetto? You are laughed at by the blacks. Misunderstood by the whites. I just want to be seen as colorless. Let me be who I am on the inside. Not the color of my skin.

    People who like House and techno cant be hipsters. Im sorry, you guys are more or less ravers. And the hipster movement has ALWAYS hated ravers. All this new rave techno neon and shutter shade wearing stuff has nothing to do with the hipster movement. We dont want you/need you. And dont test my credentials, Ive lived in Silverlake for 8 years and seen the scene rise and fall only to rise again.
    Even Carles is misinformed. His attitude is spot on but his musical taste smells like 1999.

    OK, but those lines are taken from Green Velvet’s SHAKE & POP, noughties Chicago house classic.

    So there ain’t nuthin RAVER bout it. House & techno heads (not really a subculture) h8 ravers (not really a subculture) even moar than hipsters do (not really a subculture).

    Sorry that you are adopting a misinformed, exlusive pre 2K ‘hipstercentric Weltanschauung’

    except if it wasnt for the rave scene house and techno would have no real wide outlet. house heads (usually gay) may pretend to hate ravers but the difference is thin and blurry. Frankie Bones is a house dj and the godfather of rave. Juan Atkins plays numerous raves.
    Sorry you are wrong and please move away from bohemia.
    besides they mostly dance the same.

    There’s as much variety in electronic music, from mainstream to underground, as there is in any other type of form of music (or any form of art for that matter). Raves were in fact underground in the early 90s and they became commercial like everything else.

    Lol@ the living in Silverlake for 8 years. That place is a dirty, crime ridden shit-hole who’s only saving grace is that a bunch of people who think they are cool and have good taste congregate together because they can’t get along with “normal people”. Really fucking sad. But I was the same way so I understand.

    Really glad I outgrew this elitist mindset. My taste is just as refined as always but I don’t identify with it anymore. I can actually see people for who they are and not expect them to be as cool as I am.

    Actually I don’t get it.

    But, what I have got from reading some comments is that there are usually three types of people commenting;

    1: People off their heads on something.

    2: People trying so desperately to fit into “the scene” that they come off short and end up as some sort of half-hearted caricature of it.

    3: (However rare.) People who are genuinely “alt” and are only so because they enjoy it, not because it makes them cool.

    I’m sorry if I offend anybody, but to be offended is to admit that I am, in fact, correct and you are one of those try-hards.

    PEACE.

However you want to read this blog, it’s still a.) becoming extremely redundant and lame and b.) has very strong racist and sexist tendencies in almost every post. So Im glad that you get it, you idiot, but it has a negative effect on its readers in many aspects.

    It makes americans look like idiots. Do you think european kids go around obsessing and raving about how they are so alternative? No, people who are truly phased with mainstream culture just tune it out and do their own thing.

    All the people who are in to this blog and defend it are seriously pathetic tools. You’re just a bunch of mainstreamers who were rejected from the mainstream, cant grasp any other type of real lifestyle, so you adapt another entirely mainstream lifestyle such as this one.

    Do the world a favor and either shut up or self-destruct.

    ^this is a response to the way you want to be. I dont understand why its so bad to not be obsessively ‘alternative’. i can relate to you, i know what youre talking about (music, literature etc.) but i dont make a point to be blatantly ‘alternative.’ the most beautiful people i know are themselves and have views on subjects that MAKE SENSE.

    To me this is just more of the same white minds deciding what the mentality of a colored person should be simply by having an opinion that’s none of their business. It’s not like only white people get the radio or watch MTV. What a rude assumption it is that this person has gone through any kind of struggle or was raised in a more accepting circumstance based on what they listen to? Do you think black people care THAT much about what other black people listen to; at least to the degree where it would warrant ridicule to a point where you’d think someones alignment would favor that of those who contested more closely? Aside from the fact that Rock and Roll is a notoriously black sound of music from conception siting artist like Little Richard, Bo Diddly, Chuck Barry, or Fats Domino. There was a time where there were more black people playing “rock” then there were white people. And they were far more outrageous performers and played more skillfully. So if you were curious, yes it’s natural for a black person to associate themselves with rock or any derivative. It’s not a learned habit. Just as it natural for a white person to assume another cultures art and make said cultures misplaced in partaking of their own shit. What pisses me off about this discussion is YOU’RE the little bird in someones ear saying “Isn’t there something different about this?” before you know weather or not a black person would ever have acknowledged it.
