Is it still authentic to be ‘alt’?

I am the SleepyHeadBro.
This bro is me.
This is my youtube presence.

Sometimes I get the feeling that ‘being alt’ is just some sort of game. Like any1 can dress up to look alt, if you just shop at the right stores, or if you wait 1.3 years for Hot Topic to sell ‘what seemed alt 2 years ago.’

Should I buy an expensive hair iron?
Should I buy a zany wrist band?
Should I buy a Palestinian Scarf?
Should I buy a time machine and live in 2k7 forever?
Should I draw ‘blood’ running down my nose to make ppl think that I just did ‘a shit load of blow’?

Not sure who I am. Might be growing older. Might be losing touch with the tween generation. Seems like it might all just be a game of ‘fucking dress up.’ Not sure if ppl even really like music, or if ‘enjoying music’ is just aligning your personal brand with shifting aesthetics over time to represent ‘personal growth.’ Not sure why I like what I like. Losing it. Losing everything. Honestly don’t even know what the best album of 2k9 is.

Is it no longer authentic to be ‘alt’?
Was ‘alt’ just some sort of ‘defense mechanism’ 2 keep from feeling like ‘just another brick in the wall’?
What is the new ‘alt’? I feel like I must answer this question in order to move forward as a blog.

Alt is dead?

i feel gay for writing this all out but there was never such a thing as alt. like any other claim to identity its all about your perspective. if you thought you were really cool cuz u listened to electro and indie thats because in your mind you thought that everyone else listened to the radio and shit. theres college kids in bangladesh that think theyre alt cuz theyre majoring in photography (which truly is alt over there because everyone else is trying to be a doctor or an engineer). no matter how early in the trend you were, the idea of wearing skinny jeans appealed to u cuz baggy jeans were becoming fashionable and u were like ughh i hate these bros. now that the internet allows us to spread ideas/trends incredibly fast ppl are unable to keep up with claiming their own identity and claiming their ‘uniqueness’. the real truth of the matter is that you are not unique in your clothes, interests, hobbies, favorite music, political beliefs. The only thing that can truly separate you from others is to be 100% true to yourself.

Tweens are too undecided and as such are overly impressionable. Yet they seem to have solid, concrete foundations in their head that tell them to keep searching for the next quirky/zany/’in’ trend to keep them relavent even though they don’t know how to rel a vent.

@katzenjammer, Bros can be very fun to trip with if they can handle it. Mostly rolling around the ground and laughing at things like somersaults. I usually keep myself composed while my mind is off somewhere completely different.

It really sucks trying to live how you want to live when you don’t live where you want to live. Maybe I should go the ‘apathy’ route and jump on a greyhound and test my luck.

nothing is alt. everything is accessible and will be duplicated. the lifestyle and career you all built on being ‘fresh’, ‘hip’, ‘alt’ was only a mimic of a group of cultural extremist who felt they had reach the pinnacle of cultural relevance. you didnt invent. no one did. it started as a latent spark, evolved, and is now being diluted so as to be easily digested to the perpetual appetites of american consumers who find their cultural substantiation through purchasing and mimicking. but take solace in this, for this is our culture. this is our behavior. a constantly evolving band of humans searching for relevance. PERHAPS YOU CAN LIVE NOW, CARLES. LETS HEAR IT FOR CARLES’ NEW EXISTENTIAL AVENUE!

    //////////Reply by purplepenguin74

@zoetrope, that’s right. Good comment. For example, the 2000s idea of Alt’s really been dying down. The whole “being cool” thing is really looked down upon by alot of people, more than I ever remembered. It’s subtle, but you can feel it. It’s always easier for younger kids to dress up and “be cool”, but the older you get, obviously you have to dress a certain way or be totally dismissed as even, dare I say “relevant”. (Unless you live in LA or are a real rock star : o p) But you knew that.

So in other words, you have to start wearing expensive baby blue oxford shirts and upper-middle-class “French casual” clothing or else be looked down upon, even by people who actually “are cool”-hell that’s what they’re wearing anyways: expensive-looking gear. Also, a lot of “cool” people are starting to either give up trying so hard to look alt, or because times are “changing”. They really are. The economy, culture, etc. Here’s an equation: if black culture=*was* truly “alt”, and black=finally in the White House, you know that whatever was truly “alt” (black culture itself) has now really been reconsidered. Even two years ago, New York Magazine had that whole “The Hipster Must Die” article, which must have made some people feel just self-conscious about being “cool”/alt. I think it was because alt became a bunch of people copying each other too much and nothing truly “new” was being created. The ratio of people “following” and actually “making” decent stuff was tipped. “Cool” culture cycles have a short shelf-life, because the cycle of cool/mainstream keeps reversing/changing its cycle every few years, sometimes dies down for a while, too, like when there’s a bad economy.

Music-wise, though, Carles-remember that good music is good music and it really does not matter whether it is alt/”cool”. But its up to you, you see? It’s great to be ahead of everyone and to like cool bands, but always keep in mind the songs/bands that makes YOU + (you’re immediate circle of friends) feel “okay” when you hear them, and not want to smash your radio into bits. Music always keeps changing, and your tastes may eventually, too.

But anyhow, the you/we just have to keep CREATING and observing, drawing, writing about life and culture, and LIVING. Going out and doing stuff. Or we’ll turn out like the movie “Idiocracy”.

i saw 2 tweens are am appy in SohO ny about a month ago. they couldnt be 0lder than 11 or 12. they were in neon keds high wasted tie die jean shorts and flowy tucked in tops with angel head bands. not to mention they had acne & braces. they were trying so hard to be ALT—kinda felt like i was in the wrong place. h0nestly it made me feel really stupid. @ that m0ment i realized to these little miley-loving grls, dressing b0h0 was ‘kewl’ 2 them. my friend and i were disguzted. their oblivious mother in a juicy jumpsuit with a small rabbit (via d0g) in her Dooney & Burke purse was on her f0ne yelling @ s0me sad ass house wife LA BITCH. felt like i needed 2 puke right there on the Am Appy bandeau bras and their Jersey Sleeveless Funnel Neck Shift Dress. eeeehk. some1 plz help me answer carls q- what are we d0ing? are tweenz ruining this alt lifestyle? IS IT AUTH anymore? are u trying to find the meaning of life along with milli0ns of jonas brothers fans?

@bANANAS, tweens didnt ruin ‘alt’, ‘alt’ ruined ‘alt’. it only ever exisited as a superficial way to express a reality of the human condition – individualism. the youth is the only group succeptable to a superficial movement like being ‘alt’ because they havent lived enough to know how to be their own individual – they only know what they want to reject (mainstream lifestyle = their parents = teenage rebellion = something that has exisited in every generation). Their rejection/rebellion usually comes in a superficial form, ie. clothes, hair, appearance. Once they realize that a.) dressing like an alt will get the attention of the cops more than going undercover as a mainstreamer (for the ‘alts’ who like drugs this becomes a very helpful realization) and b.) there are millions of others dressing the exact same way, so the clothes no longer make a statement about individuality. Its an inevitable cycle of all youth trends. Youth isnt jaded by the realities of ‘everyday life’ so they have the beautiful drive to dig deeper for ‘meaning’ and ‘relevance’, but they are lazy and insecure, so the search ends with a superficial solution, which is just as empty as the life they want to grow away from.
Every ‘alt’ lifestyle has been done. I think the 60’s hippes were the first ‘alts’ and the death of hip was in 1968. The cycle repeats itself.
    Psychadelics help.

damn, if a couple of 11 year old girls can make you question something you liked just by existing in a certain place at a certain time then maybe you don’t like that thing as much as you thought you did.

and maybe those 11 year old girls have a greater handle on the “meaning of life” than you

Carles, when HRO turns from fun into work it can’t be authentic.

    Maybe it’s already happened.

I can’t blame you for not telling us.

But don’t expect us to tell you where ‘relevant’ will emerge next, tho I think it will appear as plaid shutter shades…or maybe professional ‘yo-yo’s’ with lubricated bearings.

it’s not about being ‘alt’ (of course, and carles knows this), it’s about projecting an identity that evinces your wider and fresher and superior familiarity with and enjoyment of your time’s available cultural capital (or something).

it’s also about differentiation, like dandies with their dandy-ish clothes who wanted to be seen as distinct from the plebes — aka as ‘men of distinction’. alts just want to be perceived as smarter and with more beautiful souls than mainstreamers, is all.

of course that should mean graduating from cheap mondays skinny jeans to a subtler, more understated fashion sense/designer clothes, from reading dave eggers to reading, i dunno, pg wodehouse or dante or something, and &c.

i think few take this step to the next level bc really it ain’t for everyone, it takes real smarts and dedication.

Acting territorial toward new altcruits is just going to alienate them from the movement. You have to be confident enough in your althood to welcome them in while conveying the unspoken assertion that they “don’t really know what the fuck is up” and you have to find a way to be their big brother without coming off like a pedo.

Some of the most musically educated and informed people I have ever known dressed like average people. They weren’t concerned with how they looked, they just liked music.

When I was younger I dressed as crazy as I could, all young people go through this phase, personal style becomes extremely important as you try to distinguish yourself from the crowd in order to get the attention of the opposite sex.

When you get a bit older you may not feel the need to dress like that anymore, but that doesn’t make you any less interested in music or culture or art or whatever.

Music matters. Younger people trying to emulate the personal style of the musicians they admire, does not matter. They are just experimenting with their individuality.

And to make fun of them on a blog is on par with high school jocks teasing the nerds in the locker-room mentality. Which is about as mainstream as it gets.

@gnar sesh, My point was that it is a mainstream attitude–you probably aren’t making a real point, but this is just a kid messing around with how he looks. And whoever Carles is, he’s an adult and is way past the point of being threatened by how teenagers dress.

And this was about “liking good music”– what in the hell does this kid’s style have to do with your personal music taste? Isn’t that style over substance, ie “mainstream”?

I really liked this blog and Carles’ humor, and I like some of the music coverage, but I can’t support a site that makes fun of and singles out innocent kids who are just trying to form an identity, even if somehow you think they have the power to actually take away YOUR style.

Come on people. I guess to be “alt” these days means “not to be mean spirited and cliquish”.

    @RJC,

Oh yeah and for the record, the reason I found this site was as a serious music fan, and someone who USED to be stuck up indie kid (meaning I couldn’t relate to anyone) I got sick and tired of the elitist attitude of sites like pitchfork and was looking for something that actually called these hipsters out for thinking they were better than everyone else–and this site I thought was along that vein, but apparently it’s the same high school shit, just being done by adults now.

If you guys are searching for authenticity, then start by not being threatened by people who may wear a similar clothing style or have their hair cut the same way you do. You know, the substance underneath and all that ‘meaningful’ stuff.

@RJC, BUT RJC, What if we aren’t trying to be pretentious or mean and are just sitting in amusement of the strangeness of a confused tween? @gnar sesh, finding a video of some you don’t know, and inferring a lot about how you think they are a poser, isn’t pretentious or mean? And how do you know how this kid is going to react? If you can’t see the difference between singling out a teenager who is at the height of being susceptible to criticism, and some hipster band that is older and is used to being in the public eye, I don’t know what to tell you.

And, Carles is anonymous. At least this kid was willing to put his face on his video. So the kid actually has more guts and integrity than Carles, who sits behind his mysterious alter ego taking pot-shots at people.

But if you can’t understand it, I can’t explain it… this elitist attitude about what is alt and what is not alt IS THE barrier between authentic and inauthentic.

You want to be a self-hating hipster? Make fun of ‘tweens’ and their you-tube videos, the same way you got made fun of in high school. You want to be a real person and see beyond that superficial shit? Grow out of this need to point at and make fun of people, live your own life, and if you are a creative type, make some meaningful art and leave the rest of the world alone.

    My two cents.

There is nothing to ‘get’…. I don’t care if it’s ironic or post ironic or post-post ironic, or pre-post-post ironic, there is no way you can package making fun of young kids who never did anything to you as an interesting observation.

It is what it is, singling someone out to make fun of them unfairly. If you want to somehow justify that into thinking there is a larger theme behind it, more power to ya.

@gnar sesh, I thought this site was great the first few days I read it, because Carles does have some interesting things to say and he does know a bit about music… but I dealt with this shit when I was younger, being the ‘alt jr.’ trying to fit in with the ‘alt seniors’ and many of them were just too damn cool for school… and all I wanted was to hang out with people who loved indie music as much as I did. I was just passionate about the music.

And I could never understand how so many of these people could love the same music I did, and be so arrogant and condescending to people in their OWN SCENE… until I started acting that way as I got older.

Now I realize how dumb I was, and how they were just trying to raise themselves above others do to insecurity. So I’m kind of disappointed to see that same elitist mentality in a site that I considered to have very intelligent writing and satire.

And…it must be said that it is creepy for a grown adult to be posting videos of teenagers in the way Carles does. Very creepy.

I’m off my soap-box now. Got it out of my system.

Not sure I know what you all mean by ‘alt.’ Why is it always in quote marks? I assume alt = alternative, as in alternative music, which is my favorite genre of music, and if so, I can assure you it’s not dead.

I recently moved to the Boston area and one of the first things I saw on my street was a poster advertising a Marcy Playground show in a couple of weeks — a band that emerged in the first or second wave of alternative in the 90s and, apparently, is still going strong. So have no fear! Alt is alive if we want it to be.

Basically what this cunt has been saying for 3 years is, from a 30 something has-been indie alt kid that carlesbro is…(not showing his identity is so f*cking lame)…that “alt” which is a very U.S phrase, doesnt exist because it gets quickly absorbed into mainstream, hipsterland , or whatever the fuck he wants to call it…..
It crushes him that what he (most likely) lacks in good looks, has to make up belong to some “alt” scene…..”alts” isnt a movement, not political….just a simple rejection of mainstream, and lower down the line what he terms “hipsters”, which absorb the alt culture, merely as a fashion assessory……In fact you could say that hipsters are a catylst from alt to mainstream, wedged in between…..

Carlbro is saying his middle aged opinions to poor teens and twentiy somethings who are just enjoying life and dont have time to analysis stupid cultural genres that he despises other blogs using, but for some reason believes “alt” is valid, or indeed has been valid. According to this prick, “Hipsters” are just fashion peeps with no idea, and just choosing styles and music that they think they should be choosing. Why people who are “alt” read shit blogs like this, listen to the highly overrated music like “animal collective” who have 2 good songs, and has taken 15 years to get noticed with their cut and paste music……

    2007 sucked
I didn’t draw fake blood, I made it. I made it look like a nosebleed because if you read MY blog or looked further into me instead of mindlessly posting it on your poorly designed site you would know I find nosebleeds very organic and beautiful.

I suggest you know your shit before you talk it.

Dunno why anyone’s getting upset over this guy. I thought this was what an entry-level alt was.

Yo, Carlesbro, I have written ALT IS DEAD in all caps in the comment section of every altBlog i’ve read in the past 3.2 blog years. You are way behind the trend. By now, saying ALT IS DEAD is mainstream.

    “ALT IS DEAD” IS DEAD.

How can alt be dead? I remember when “Alt” became a label on record bin. There will always be ALT cos here will be a new gen that needs a label. IF ALT is dead another word will just replace it.

Hello, everyone. Have any of you heard of a band called Radiohead? I just heard their album Pablo Honey and I thought it was really good and kind of “alt.” So maybe alternative styles aren’t dead.

(A sidenote: Carles keeps talking about a website called Pitchfork Media that looks like it’s for alternative music. Do you guys know if that is a good site?)

some of the comments on here are absolutely ridiculous. OH NOEZ a 16 year old on youtube is wearing a wristband!!!!! he has taken my personal style away from ME!!!! *cries* get a grip. wear what you want, label your style if you must, and let other people wear what they want. theres so much more to life, and so much more to people. i think the video is cute, and i subscribed to him on youtube :) this is his most popular video, thanks to this article. THX GUYZZZ STAY ALT!!

will alt seek to ‘re-define’ itself when the strokes release a new album? are the strokes the godfathers of contemporary alt? would like 2 know…

To be really alt in America you need to be a traditionalist Shi’a Muslim who does not use computers, wears earth tones and slack pants, and listens to super obscure/elite psych folk from the middle east and serious electroacoustic music. If you do that, there is zero chance the mainstream will encroach upon your deal.
