Is ‘All is Love’ by Karen O and the Kids the first song of the indie apocalypse?

I was recently in my car listening to some song by the lead singer of the Yea Ya Yee-ah!s which she apparently wrote for the ‘Where the Wild Things Are‘ soundtrack. From what I understand, they are attempting to make the movie seem meaningful to kids by borrowing the commercialized ‘meaningful aesthetic’ from modern ‘indie aesthetic.’

Please sing the meaningful lyrics along with the kidz in the song:

One, two, ready, GO!

Grow some big feet
Holes in history
is where you’ll find me
Is where you’ll find

All is Love
Is Love (x4)

L-O-V-E
It’s a mystery
Where you’ll find me
Where you’ll find

All is Love
Is Love (x4)

Hey!
Woo!
Ha!
Wee!
Hey!
Woo!
Wee!

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh..
All is Love

One, two, ready, GO!

L-O-V-E
It’s a mystery
Where you’ll find me
Where you’ll find

All is Love
Is Love (x4)

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh..
All is Love
Is Love (x15)

When I heard this song, I seriously felt like ‘indie’ had officially become everything it could be and it was officially time to ‘close the book’ modern history’s indie era. Much like we have moved on to ‘mock’ eras like the grunge era, the 80s, emo, posthardcore, bloghouse, disco, and the era where woodstock happened, it seems like a song like this leaves us no choice than to admit that the INDIE era is over. Feeling like this song does not exist as an ‘indie song’, but possibly as a ‘parodied version of an indie song constructed via overproduction’, sort of like how Coldplay songs are just parodies of the band Coldplay.

The kid fueled ballad is attempting to ‘exploit’ modern indie production techniques to build a meaningful experience. Childrens choirs. Lyrics that simple ppl could relate to. Whistling. An overall tone of ‘building’ towards something more meaningful. Some basic theme that you could put on a mix CD for an entry-level alt. An overall feeling of ‘togetherness’ since there are so many lil voices singing. Zany ’screams’, ‘woos’, and other ‘tribal shit.’

After listening to this kidz song, it makes u feel like Kidz Bop is ‘the master art’, and the best music in the history of audio recording. Take for instance the song ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley. When a large black man sings it, it is more difficult to identify with, since you imagine that you are living a black man’s life, suffering from some sort of social oppression. However, when kids sing it, the song transforms into a zany song that makes u feel kRaZy in a healthy, whimsical way.

I feel troubled by the free-spirited Karen O song, as if it is trying to ‘appeal to children’, but at the same time, trying to appeal to ‘lonely music critic bros.’ There is just something very troublesome about indie ballads that attempt to take the listener to a ‘far, far away imaginary land’ or something.

Honestly feel like this song is the beginning of the end of indie.
Is indie dead/has it been dead/when will indie ‘die’?
What other songs could be official songs of the indie apocalypse?

(According to the AltBible, there will be Four Songs of the Indie Apocolypse. There is no way to know if these songs already exist, or if they will soon be composed. We will only know that they exist when indie is dead.)

Is ‘kidz bop’ the best way for parents to connect with their kids, building their relationship around today’s most important pop music? Seems like a ‘cash cow’, which may explain the aesthetic/business decisions behind Karen O’s composition. I think that parents ‘actually buy’ mp3s/CDs for their kids, so it was important for the WildThingsSoundtrack to have a meaningful kidz singalong anthem.

Feeling troubled by indie music that involves childrens choirs. not sure if I will ever be able to appreciate Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” again. Feel like it might have been exploiting youth, but now that I am older and bitterer-er, I resent how those kids have a perfect life, and still have their whole lives’ ahead of themselves.

Not sure if children make music more enjoyable. Seems like I would find it hard to relate to a lil kid singing a song about life since they can only do things like ‘play video games’, eat products rich in high fructose corn syrup, and worry about ‘being kewl.’

Worried that indie is dead.
Worried that indie will be replaced by ‘kidz music.’
I can’t tell if modern alternative people want to ‘be kids again’ or if we are looking for complex lyrics and musical arrangements to empathize with.
Not sure if I will have kids. u?

Kidz Bop is a way for kids who are too young to appreciate anything other than marketing jingles to evolve into slightly older beings who listen to music that, instead of selling one product, sells a lifestyle which comes with all sorts of neat accessories.

    like pokemon evolution

liking Kidz Bop => liking Disney Rock => liking Indie Rock => liking “underground, authentic” Indie Rock => hating music => writing for pitchfork

i think with every other sort of music, people will move on, and eventually either be ashamed of having listened to it, or they will look back at it and recall being part of something great. whatever comes next, most will join in and accept as the next “mainstream alt” thing, (by mainstream alt, i mean that alt is a movement that will grow, and is growing, enough so to become mainstream. there will be a point when what we know as alt now becomes mainstream, i would say we are at this point now.) tangent, shit, okay. back to where i was going, the next mainstream alt thing, right, people will follow the next wave, alt fad, whatever you want to call it. there is only one solution, whatever comes next, dont follow it, stick with the indie music, but with the real indie music, not the mainstream indie that we know of now, yeah yeah yeahs, are good, but look deeper into the core of music find something indie that is so alt, no mainstream alt kid will be able to comprehend it.,

yes, that is the solution. let the “mainstream-alt kids”, move on to their next “mainstream-alt” thing you keep with your own true alt music.

Indie has somewhat been on the verge of over exposure since 2008. It only makes sense though, its a genre for the 2000-2009 era of music. 2010 means a new era and most likely everything from the past era will die out and new trends, music, fashion, etc. will become of 2010-2019. Its history ya’ll.

Indie is not dead, at least not (h8 myself for saying this) ‘true’ indie. I think the current threat to the indie aesthetic and genre as a whole are the bandwagon jumpers, who just follow every fad they can, mindlessly. Currently they’re making the transition between scene and alt, but a very VERY entry-level alt where they think Feist/Metric are the indiest shit out there. I think we have a few years of high-level indie left, before they come and muck shit up. Seriously don’t even think most of these tweens know what an MP3 blog is.

this is how i see it:

bad music->blog house/indie->indie/anco/grizzbear->new 2010 trend that is cooler than the previously stated trends.

in 2012, the music that we think is bad now will be popular again, and we will start all over.

let’s see – since i consider p4k to be completely irrelevant, i reckon that “indie” died a long time ago. when the pitchfork music fest has to resort to booking talent that’s already played their music fest + booking talent from outside indie (i.e. public enemy) u sorta realize they’ve “run out of indie bands”. Sorta weird to think that indie even survived bloghaus – i guess maybe because bloghaus only lasted for 2 blogyears that maybe we 4got that bloghaus killed indie. karen O ruined music 4 every1. and i h8 her. i h8 how people prolly try to “pay crls $$$” to review their songs/albums. I love how crls prolly accepts their $$$ and then gives their songs/albums “bad reviews”. Sorta sad how the people who paid crls prolly “don’t care” cos ne exposure is “good exposure”.

Anyway -the end of the decade (an arbitary number) will be much less important on the development of indie music than the aging of the current tween generation. when today’s tweens become teens everything we cherished will be thrown away. Today’s tweens are busy working on a “final solution” to ride themselves of ne1 who is currently older than 19 (with the exception of MJ who they will idolize 4ever) Just as you may be the “9/11 generation” they will be the “MJ Murder generation”

    THIS IS IT.

What is indie independent of anymore? The once “oppressive” major record labels aren’t so major anymore. They’re pony express riders watching the transcontinental telegraph finish construction. I don’t see indie as dead as much as complete or nearly complete. We, the people, are nearly “free” of major labels and their “tryanny.”

“Like omgawd my record label encouraged me to change my band’s name from Starfucker to Bebop. My record label ruined my integrity. Music is f*cked because of their selfish greed.”

I find it sad that indie musicians and indie labels had almost nothing to do with the demise of the major record labels. Jay-Z didn’t leave Def Jam for Live Nation because Sub Pop’s message of change compelled him. The Mp3-Internet Complex progressed the indie agenda in a way “subversive” folk protests just never could.

“I can’t believe Radiohead gave away In Rainbows for free. They could have made a lot of money off that album. What’s the deal with the music industry? Things are so different now. I miss the old days. I download all my music from Limewire, Napster, Kazay, Kazaa, Bearshare, Hypemachine, Pirate Bay, underground message boards. I think after In Rainbows a lot of bands are going to give away their album for free. I paid 100 dollars for In Rainbows.”

    Your thoughts?

Okay, yes there is bad music and good music. We all have different tastes. I don’t think Indie is dead or will be dying anytime soon. If there wasn’t bad music, we wouldn’t have anything to discuss. I appreciate all music and I judge a song, by the way it makes me feel or how it effects my memory and my life. I would like to hear more storytellers, such as The Decemberists, Ben Folds, and Belle and Sebastian. I’m getting kind of tired of the Electro Pop that’s taking over.

If “indie” ever died (and I don’t even know what that’s supposed to mean), this must have been the moment:

When I was a kid I knew about THAT bad shit like fructose……and, um, sweatshops.
Indie used to be complicated shit, liek “And so i’m reaching out for the one, and so i’ve learned the meaning of the sun, and all this like a message comes to shift my point of view, and watching through my own light as it tints the shade of you”
But now it’s just some soft-serve shit like “dum de dum dew dew dew de dew dew oh what a wonderful world” what the fuck NO?
Those first lyrics were Azure Ray and BLEW MY FUCKING MIND. The second lyrics were off the Juno soundtrack and make me lose faith in humanity.

uuum, so this is bullshit. like, okay, this is a kiddy indie song, but it’s for a children’s movie. where the wild things are isn’t something you can sing some hardxcorex deep indie song for. it’s cool and makes the movie more reachable for an older audience when karen o (aka one of the ultimate coolest indie rockers) does a song for it. it’s basically her showing that she doesn’t just have to do indie rock, she can also pull off a sweetass song for a kid’s movie. this song isn’t the greatest thing i’ve ever heard, but it does NOT mean that indie is dying.

It will never die, you may think this is bad music but there are a lot of people who think it’s catchy and fun
As long as some people like a certain kind of music, it will never die
What year are you in? It’s 2009;there’s someone to like everything no matter how important, “cool”, or popular it is

You are the type of people I would never want to hang out with. Never mind be around music with you. You’re all music snobs. You can’t just listen to music you have to analyze every single little part and insult every band that isn’t some underground band that you saw at this “great club with some cool music”. Get real. Fuck you guys.

    @Fuckyouguys,
I was just about to write the same thing when I read your comment. I agree with you 100% The person who wrote this blog post and too many of the commenters (not all) are full of shit. These guys are part of what’s wrong with music. People can’t enjoy music of any kind anymore because people like these guys ruin the experience. Shallow hipster douchebags.

    @Fuckyouguys,
I agree with you 100%. Why do we have to focus on our attention so much on what is “indie” or not? Can’t we just listen to what we like, despite the fact that, SURPRISE, if it’s good music, other people might like it too?
    I hate indie snobs.

Music is more than words. The song accurately captures the “Where the Wild Things Are” vibe without having to describe love’s role in the movie. The kids’ role in the song made it more innocent and simple, which is how children perceive the world around them. The “zany tribe” part connects to the film. I’m very happy the director and producers moved towards an indie-ish vibe. The songs were more playful, imaginative, and magical than I expected. They moved me during the movie and they can stand very well on their own. I don’t know why you guys ask for so much.

INDIE IS AN IDEA. IDEAS CAN’T DIE CUZ THEY’VE NEVER BEEN ALIVE.

Indie only exists because we’re talking about it. Meanwhile, teach your kids the difference between good music and bad music…. and start with the basics. Literally, start with classical. Make them PLAY and instrument and then let them decide what they like for themselves. BTW, do YOU play an instrument (besides Guitar Hero on Expert, you stupid fuckss?)

ANd if you like coldplay at ALL, you’re a moron. And if you like Nickelback, then you should be shot on-site.

ok this guy honestly thinks that because kids sing wit her that indie is over??? ok the movie is based off a CHILDRENS book.. and it was made for the people who were kids wen it came out… taking a song made for a movie and shooting it down and not thinking about the movie it is made for… lets be smart now.
and he really seems to HATE children… they r the future… i hate to tell u but the kids picking their nose and sticking it under their desk r gonna be leading the world wen u r old and dieing.
he envys kids cause they have a life to live….. he did to he just wasted it writing blogs!
oh and kidzbop is FAR from Karen O…. she is amazing, one of my heroes. and her voice is BEAUTIFUL! kidzbop is off beat and lame. i think u have to be under 6 to listen to it or its just weird… and its not killing indie.
oh and he isnt real indie, his mind needs to be more open to be wat he wishes he was. but instead he is just another blogger.
