I have heard many stories about how music inspires people to perform terrible things. During my time on Earth, I have watched how entire subcultures and social groups can rally around aesthetically unified music. So many kinds of music 4 so many kinds of ppl who have different life goals. I have also read tons of ‘hard-hitting’ articles about how certain musical genres are bad for society/inspire terrible people to perform terrible things.
Have u heard of horrorcore? It seems like it is probably a ‘bad thing’ that I am first hearing about it because some horrorcore bro just murdered 4 people; there is a 0% chance that I will like the music, unless I enjoyed murdering people.
This bro is a horrorcore rapper named Syko Sam. People in ‘the real world’ know him by his birthname “Richard Samuel McCroskey.” Based on an article I read on the CNN news source, he apparently killed 4 people.
CNN: Richard Samuel McCroskey III — a 20-year-old rapper in the underground genre of “Horrorcore” who sang of chopping people into pieces — has been arrested in connection with the slayings. The crime scene was so horrifying police would not even describe it, saying only that the victims died of blunt force trauma.
I had never heard of the Horrorcore genre, so I had to go to the wikipedia to find out what it was: “Horrorcore defines the style of hip hop music that focuses around horror-influenced topics that include Satanism, cannibalism, suicide, murder and rape.” It seems to make sense that this bro ‘murdered some1′ based on his affinity towards that genre of music. It’s like we all have a self-concept, and we can use music to reinforce our perspective of the world. Just want to feel ‘normal’/like some1 ‘gets’ me and my problems. (Are musicians role models?)
Horrorcore seems like a very unchill genre. Like only ‘very stupid people’ would listen to that. People who ‘did not fit in’ and never really had a brain that developed after they turned 11 years old. It seems like if you went to public high school, horror-core fans were the people who were the highest on the ‘I think 1 day this person will shoot up our school’ list. You sort of just hoped that they were ‘too dumb’ to plan out some sort of massacre, or that they turned to a life of drug abuse that crippled any sort of massive undertaking beyond ‘getting a job at Taco Bell.’
CNN: McCroskey is a young man with no criminal record who took delight in the blend of horror hip-hop that celebrated macabre killings. He went by the name Syko Sam. In one YouTube video, he holds a hatchet and sings about killing people and putting their remains in black bags: “Last night I was the murderous rage. Now, I gotta get rid of the bodies before the corpses start to get to rotting.”
Just listened to a Syko Sam song called ‘Murderous Rage.’ Seems like a good title, based on the lyrical content.
The song seems to be ‘dark’, describing the act of murdering of some ppl, then the always difficult process of hiding their corpses and trying not 2 get caught. Feeling very troubled about Richard McCroskey’s existence. Starting to get the feeling that there are tons of Syko Sams out there, all with some sort of repressed hate of the world, eager to kill people since it is the only outlet of their feelings that they will ever be capable of enacting.
Listened to some other song by Syko Sam (Honestly think that he believes ‘psycho’ is spelled ’syko’ [via failed standardized testing]). The song sorta sounds like some Eminem song since it is about ‘every1 in the world sucking’ and killing ppl. I feel like most human beings ‘wish that other people would understand them’ and their request is probably reasonable since most humans are generally the same, but I feel like these cries for understanding/empathy are ‘completely retarded.’ Probably ’subhuman’ cries for attention, since they are not yearning to be in touch with humanity.
Now that I have heard these horrorcore songs, I feel like I can understand Eminem as an artist + his appeal + his contribution to society. He is sorta like mainstream horrorcore bro, and sort of ’softens’ his brand by dissing pop culture a lot instead of rapping about hate and murder.
These horrorcore songs really make me ‘feel ill’, I think. It is the opposite of chillwave music. I remember when ‘cop killer rap’ was destroying society, but it seems like some African Americans might have a reason to resent cops/the white man. I am not sure if Horrorcore bros deserve to feel the way that they feel. I think that they seriously are the bros who ‘cannot distinguish between reality and Grand Theft Auto.’ I even find the Dirty Projectors to be insanely more listenable than Horrorcore.
From what I have read, HORRORCORE BROS are actually known as JUGGALOS. They seem to take pride in being ‘misfits’, wearing baggy pants, painting their faces to look like clowns who are insane, and sculpting their hair with gel. Recently, juggalos have become an internet meme, since they are white trash with a LOLable brand. I think that juggalos are not just whites, but any colour–the only requirement of their clan is that u ‘feel like no1 gets u’ in a dark way. I feel like no1 ‘gets’ me, but I still don’t want to be a juggalo.
You can see that Syko Sam is a Juggalo/horrorcore bro. He is dressed in black, has a frumpy figure, and gels his bangs into lil spikes. Most of these bros wear ‘baggy ass’ clothing cuz they come from a broken home and have only eaten fast food their entire lives’.

I think there is a ‘natural order’ that establishes where we will fit into a particular social group. I think that juggalos are ’seriously at the very bottom’ of the social totem pole. Like you genuinely have to be born into the perfect storm of tragedies to become a juggalo.
I feel sad that I wasn’t able to go to the ‘Gathering of the Juggalos.’ It is apparently the #1 gathering of ‘the most misunderstood people on Earth.’

I feel very troubled by this ’subculture.’ I feel 0% of juggalos have a college degree, or even an associates degree.
Even some krappy local news man ‘interviewed’ a horrorcore juggalo after the Horrorcore murders. It seems like the horrorcore bro is trying 2 say ‘just cuz we sing descriptive tales about wanting 2 kill ppl, it doesn’t mean we would actually murder people.’ Fortunately, he wore a sweet mask for the interview.
I am overwhelmed by these horrorcore bros. Seriously feel ‘ill’ after reading about Syko Sam. About to throw up after looking at Juggalo content. I feel like I just wiped my ass, and examined my feces on the toilet paper, and noticed some sort of Gathering of Juggalos on my skid mark, then looked into the toilet, and saw that my log of feces consisted of juggalos. It’s kinda weird how there are so many ‘dangerous ideas’ floating around in ’smart people circles’, but it seems like no1 wants to do anything about this ‘dangerous way of life’ celebrated by volatile second class citizens. We must find a way to ‘go horrorcore’ on horrorcore.

@carolina, ‘the vice guide to sex and drugs and rock and roll’ has a humorous article about norwegian black metal that i’d recommend. it is a good read, but some parts are stupid. they hype up mayhem like they are ‘the ultimate black metal band,’ which i don’t understand because everything i’ve heard by mayhem sounds very shitty. mayhem is not cool, and the music sucks.
varg is a consistently interesting person and i like his music. he believes really weird things about ‘the lord of the rings’ that i won’t get into. ‘filosofem’ as a whole is honestly pretty great. it’s heavy and loud, but also meditative in a way sort of like messiah by godflesh. i don’t have to feel pissed off or something to enjoy it.
anyway, varg’s out of jail now and he’s supposedly making new music, so that’s cool. he’s served his time and i’d love to hear anything new he does.

My friend and I who r avid non-horrorcore fans took it upon ourselves to go see ICP in denver last weekend to see what sort of “family/cult” they have constructed. It was a socio-cultural investigation that went horribly wrong. I saw approximately 15 pairs of disgusting tits, and people that looked more wretched than GG Allin taking a fucking shit on people.
A knife was pulled on us because we looked like imposters [via having a non-icp/horrorcore related shirt on] this is truly the worst sub-CULTure.

i live 2 blocks away from the fillmore auditorium. kno whenevr juggabros r in town, several times per year [via bottles of yucky soda evrywhere on the ground.] they line up all the way 2 my apt building– icp seems to have a large denver following. have had convers8ions with some 2 try and understand where they ‘come from,’ idealistically speaking; turns out theyre just violent ppl. feel scared but also feel anger towards them, via their treatment of other ppl and animals. wish i had known u, would have told u u don’t need 2 attend concert. don’t have 2 deal with them ‘personally’– seeing them scream at women walking their dogs at nite from my balcony is enuff. scary, cult-ish. u got it rite.

I agree with this.. I don’t want to sound like an elitist (lol, whatever) but I think indie music tends to be for educated people who “get” the world. I’m just going to make a generalization and say that people who are more into business/sciences tend to just listen to the radio and in general for school they just memorize shit, and don’t really work their brains in a creative way.
Below those who are universally educated, you have people like this, people who still listen to really bad hiphop, and in general this horrible embracing of violent stupidity (I guess it’s taken as being rebellious against society? I don’t know).
I do wish more people “got” the world. I’d rather feel less authentic than have people die from this horrorcore retardation.

I remember vaguely the disclaimer they had on the album cover. Something about how their label in no way, shape, or form, agreed with any of the content but published the garbage in the name of free speech? Something along those lines. Oddly, ICP redid “Assassins” I guess. Who knew? I had forgotten about my guilty dallying with violent rap when I got laid in high school for the first time. I thought it died with my virginity. Guess not, and people still do this stuff. Even at 14, I knew it was all for sales.

What half of the people commenting this post don’t understand is that this idea REALLY came to a head in mainstream society with 2 Live Crew’s “As Nasty As They Wanna Be.” Tipper Gore got that album BANNED nationally by CONGRESS. This brutal murder, while tragic, in no way represents mainstream society. The Juggalo nation isn’t anywhere near the size or scope of the entire 12-18 year old white middle class, and that’s the population that was hiding 2LC underneath their beds and cranking “Fuck The Police” whenever their parents weren’t home. Mainstream culture was really teetering on this whole free speech and what was considered too violent way back in 1989-1992, and anyone who’s between 28-35 right now has to remember how big this was. When Sony, Warner Bros, and Def Jam were housing bands that were every bit as violent as any of these horrorcore folks, the issue was obviously larger then. Doesn’t make up for the tragedy of people possibly dying as a result, but as far as Carles satirical notions, it was huge a long, long time ago, and things actually subsided for awhile.

Ok on the real I have come here with my heart on my sleeves.My friend how can you look to destroy an entire culture its horrible.The reason people find being a juggalo attractive is people like you who baltantly hate others because they are different. I listen to horrorcore artist all the time.Horrorcore these days is similar to what rap used to be in its purest form. Dont get me wrong I listen to a wide variety of music. I got excited when I saw Elloitt Smith’s named mention for he is one of my favorite artist.
But horrorcore is not a horrible genre…Eminem was influenced strongly by ICP as well as Esham who I believe to be the roots of the tree.(Eminem does talk about killing people by the way. lol)
Another mainstream juggalo/horrorcore group is Bone Thugs N Harmony and Three Six Mafia there music has chaged a lot though…..but…

First, this goes back way further than Wu-Tang clan, little fella. You’re not digging deep enough. If you want, you could probably date this back to the first time a person sat riveted watching the television repeating Kennedy being shot. It also has to do with the quick accessibility that people have to sub-cultural depravity. Internet, snuff films, etc. In the 70’s, listening to Black Sabbath, “Black Sabbath” was creepy enough. No need for blatant visual imagery to get the job done. Now everything comes at high speed and one depraved curiosity leads to another click, and so on. In a culture where art, including music, is more readily available, there’s more of an influx of this stuff. Geto Boys talking about priests dying in holy water and having sex with corpses goes back to the late 80’s, way before Wu-Tang. And they were on WARNER BROTHERS for crying out loud. I’m not sure where the line was drawn, maybe with 2 Live Crew and all that stuff, but the mainstream was heading down the path of depravity two decades ago, and society has still stayed pretty solid despite all of that. The depravity has always been here, now there’s just more access to it now.

We have our alts, mnstrmrs, and maltstreamers just like the ‘indiependent record label’ crowd. Our scene is simply in a lower state of evolution than indiedom. We r just a few years behind. We r still mostly like adolescents who r still waiting for our ‘ironic’ organs to develop and our musical bodies to go thru a ‘growth spurt.’

Also, if you want to further understand carles, look up some interviews of tao lin (my favorite: http://therumpus.net/2009/09/the-surface-of-things-the-rumpus-interview-with-tao-lin/ ). Probably doesn’t seem to make much sense, but these guys are best friends so some idea of carles can be drawn. In some interviews with tao, it is clear he is a genius with a view of the world that is very similar to the one HRO exegesis thinks Carles has. Obviously there is more of an explanation to this post, as with any other post. Just wanted to explain that Carles doesn’t actually think we should exterminate juggalos yall. He might just sad that environmental forces make people so fucked up [via determinism.] but, don’t want Carles to be killed by a crazy person.

Hey bro! I just wanted to let you know that I listen to the ‘horrorcore genre’. I’ve been listening to it since I was 13. I also firmly believe in God (shocking huh?) and the saying ‘DON’T FUCKING JUDGE OTHERS” Especially what you read on the internet about us. Come to one of the gatherings and you will see that we are some of the nicest, caring people you will ever meet. You won’t do that though, cause it is FAR more easier to hate than to love. I hold no anger towards you, I have every right to, because of your silly comments about us, but I don’t. It’s not your fault you are so closed minded and can’t accept others as they are, it’s that horrible music you listen to bro (I might as well jump on the ‘peoples-actions-are-a-result-of-their-musical-preference’ train…).
Horrorcore isn’t for everyone, less than 1% of the U.S. population can appreciate it. It IS very extreme, it DOESN’T conform to the typical standards of music. But it IS a great outlet/therapy tool for those that can’t find one elsewhere. Yeah, I could go paint a picture when I get mad, but I’m not an artist. I could pack a bowl and smoke my troubles away, but I’m not a pothead. I could practice karate to vent my anger, but I’m not into that shit. I listen to Horrorcore instead. It’s what I get, it’s what I like, it helps me where as nothing else does. Killers that happen to listen to this kind of music, would STILL be killers regardless of what kind of music they listened to, however, you have to have a very level head on your shoulders to listen to this kind of music productively, otherwise it could turn out bad and people could get hurt.
I personally knew Sam aka Syko Sam aka Richard McCroskey, he was one of the sweetest, believe it or not nicest guys I’ve ever met. He has been listening to this genre for years, if it had been the music that ‘influenced’ him to do these horrible things, then I’m sure he would have done it a lot sooner. Everyone gets to the point at least once in their life where they are so angered or so hurt that the only thought they can fathom is hurting someone else. Whether you get so mad at someone all you can think about is knocking their teeth in, or you want to take it further. Some people cannot find the willpower to stop those urges, thus a killer is born. Everyone is trying to find a scapegoat here, when there is none. Horrible things happen everyday for no apparent reason at all. It’s life.
I respect your opinion, as I do with every human being on this planet, but there is a difference between simply ‘not getting it’ to ignorance. The next time you want to ’school’ some people on the juggalo/horrorcore subculture, PLEASE make sure you comprehend ALL of what we’re about, not just what you read on the internet. As you can see, not all of us are stupid, trailer trash, high school dropouts…

Sadly, I feel you have all looked to deep into our form of entertainment. I say ours, because, yes I am a Juggalo. I went to college, have a BA in Agricultural Science and am engaged. Every “subculture” has it’s bad seeds, I will admit. Our family seems to get along with our “subcultures” pretty well, such as “Maggors” ( Fans of the metal band Slipknot). so time to shot this bitch down. first off i graduated from high school seems like you need to do the same this so you can spell. and in school i had friends i wasn’t an outcast or anything like that just because i wore icp shirts. and on to this fag syko sam who you believe he is a horrorcore rapper because he made a few songs then killed 4 people no he is a fucking bitch for doing that. he thought because he killed a few people he would be famous because of his music……WRONG!!!!!!!!! he will now and forever be known as the biggest fakest bitch in the horrorcore game. and this shit about juggalos not having bachelors degrees is straight up bull shit because i know for a fact my girlfriend has hers and she is a juggalette. and if you were to actually listen to an insane clown posse song and look past the killing and violence you would see a message for good you dumb bitch. but other artist like insan0 make horrorcore for entertainment purpose’s only and no kids younger then 15 shouldn’t listen to it. or if they are there parents should screen it first to make sure they want their kids listing to it. that is what my parents did when i was 12 and brought home my first insane clown posse cd and they decided that i can listen to it and not go out and kill people. and in another interview mars did he said himself that he doesn’t let his kids listen to it because he IS A PARENT and he knows what he wants his kids to listen to. and one last thing dont you ever fucking ever even think about mentioning that big fucking faggot eminem as anything close to horrorcore he never was and never will be he is a mainstream pop bitch that likes to sit on dr.dres lap and get butt fucked.

This “Horrorcore” crap is kinda humerous. A bunch of dopey fucking kids that dropped out of highschool (or planning on it) get together to celebrate shitty music, with even shittier people. “Bands” like Insane Clown Posse, Kottonmouth Kings, and this Syko Sam guy should be silenced for good. As for their fans, they should be intruduced to REAL music, like Casey Jones, Have Heart, xREPRESENTx, Recon, xTYRANTx, Awaken Demons and The Acacia Strain. Also, they should drop the poison.

I am in my second year at college, and I am well on my way to a bachelor’s degree in the English language. Horrorcore is humorous…. because it is supposed to be. The members of many of these groups dress up like CLOWNS. Can it be spelled out anymore plainly to you fucking idiots? I’m willing to bet that Violent J is smarter than a large majority of the people in here. So… Yeah. I love when people try to hate something they don’t understand.
