Indie Bro Obsession & the Objectification of Female Indie Alt Celeb Musicians.

I was recently watching a youtube video of an indie bro watching a youtube video of a live performance by the popular indie female artist The St. Vincent.  The video is compelling content, an open love letter to the female of his dreams.   In the video, he pours out his emotional/spiritual/sexual/intellectual desires, letting St. Vincent know that ‘they could have a perfect life together.’

Transcription of youtube video:

Hey St Vincent. I’m sitting here sprung out watching ‘You Dig a Pony’ meanwhile I just want to be digging your pony. I think you’re sexy as hell. I’ve been stalking you since back when you were just an mp3 blogger meme, back in 2006. But I saw your potential, and here we are almost four years later, rich and famous. And I’m just so proud. I see you wearing those black tights all the time underneath your skirts and shorts, and to me, that just make a nigga go buck wild. The locks of your hair curl to perfection. You got a slammin bod and my dick raise up like a scissor kick when you hit the high note. But all I wanna know is, can you shred on your guitar like that bent over? I like that you sing in two microphones, because then it’s like there’s two of you, and I always wished that God made two of you so that I could fuck you while you lick my ass. Your lips are sexy red and I want to rub the large space in between your eyes. I’m best friends with Grizzly Bear, and I just want all of us to be friends in Brooklyn, and maybe live in your house and sleep in your bed. And I hope that when you watch this vid, you fall in love with me, because when I turn my swagger on, no one got it like this, and I be in your mother fucking dreams tonight. Thank you for watching my youtube, St. Vincent. Thank you for your music. And I love you.

I think many people would probably find this video to be ’sick’, ‘troublesome’, and miscellaneous feelings that would put them ‘above this type of cheap ploy for attention.’ But it’s important to talk about how altbros, indie bros, and music criticism middle aged bros view females in the alternative music scene. If we can assume that men are the driving force behind indie buzz, indie record sales, the indie media, and altEverything, then how do we fairly assess women’s role in ‘the whole scene.’ It seems like in this open love letter to St. Vincent, the youtubeBro gave us a valuable insight into the true desires of all bros who are alt/indie/etc.

This is what alternative males want:

  • We to be loved.
  • We want to be relevant.
  • We want to ‘bang’ bitches in ‘mad crazy’ positions
  • We want to live a perfect life in a relevant city
  • We want to be bffs with bands
  • We want to follow bands/artists and watch them grow and attribute their success to ourselves for being on the forefront of relevancy.
  • We want ‘the most respected female’ in the indie scene to be our gf [via the altbaguette theory]

How does indie bro obsession impact the indiesphere?

Will an ugly/not cute girl ever ‘make it’ as an indie artist? It seems like indie bros who ’shape’ the indie world will always have trouble evaluating female artists. I think the first thing men look at is ‘how attractive is the female.’ That seems to be ‘the most important element’ when evaluating a woman in any profession (strippers, actresses, accountants, secretaries, etc).

I think it is also important for indie females to ’seem like they are real musicians.’ This can be accomplished by either displaying a relatively high level of ‘musicianship’, or even just by ‘appearing to take themselves seriously.’ Many say that behind every great woman is a great man, so even if a ’skilled male producer’ creates mad beats, the female band member/lead singer still has a very important task in terms of branding the live performance with the level of ‘into-it-ness’ of her presence.

Whenever I see coverage of an indie starlet, I imagine some music criticism bro wild a mildly erect penis while writing a blurb. In a short blurb, the music critic bro can project his feelings/hopes/dreams/desires. He can mention that the female artist is ‘hot’ but also say something that clearly indicates ‘we need to take her seriously.’ All blurbs about female artists by men are unintentional manifestos in which we ’search 4 a sexual identity.’ I wrote this post to ‘come to terms’ with my homosexuality/heterosexuality/bisexuality/pansexuality/indiesexuality.

I feel like I am in search of ‘the perfect alt woman’, and I can’t help but entirely identify with the St. Vincent Love Letter Vlog.  I want 2 be loved, have krazie sex, and also have an authentic life.  I am not sure if I like listening to music by women, but I feel like I will watch them if they are ‘hot.’  It seems impossible for men to ‘actually like’ music by women, since many of the lyrical themes are coming from the ‘fucking dreamworld’ that exists inside of a girl’s head.

Wonder if I would consider living my perfect life with the Dirty Projector altbaguettes.

Even the Zany SNL video meme bro got ‘roped in’ by the prospects of a ‘perfect alt life’ with Joanna Newsom.

How do yall think that the horniness of men impacts the critical acceptance of women? Can indie bros ‘put aside their desire 2 mate’ when evaluating females in music? Will an ‘ugly woman’ ever be very successful at anything, or does society naturally ’select out’ the uggos? Should we segregate the indiesphere by gender? Should there be a ‘pitchfork4Girls’ instead of reading men evaluating women?

Does some sort of subconscious sexual desire impact the acceptance of all females?  Is the indiesphere an ‘equal opportunity’ hype machine?

Maybe indie bros are bisexuals. Maybe we do evaluate everything fairly. Maybe we just need to ‘learn 2 love’ regardless of (sexual) gender and (musical) genre.

Maybe we all need 2 take a lil ride on the chillwave…

How do the sexual desires of men impact the indie perception bubble/the Western World/the Middle East?
When u watch a female artist, what do u expect from her?
Are chick flicks/romantic comedies and indie-ish female musicians some sort of marketing gimmick to exploit the infamous ‘female’ demographic of humans?
If u like a band with a male lead singer, are u ‘kinda ghey’?
Do women like male singers because they want to ‘make love’ to them/get swept off their feet into a rock n roll lifestyle?
Is it realistic for men to identify with themes in music made by females?
Will men ever see women as ‘anything more than a fuck doll’?

    @Al X,

    What are you saying, that you have to always ‘identify’ with lyrical themes to make it good quality? I’m white, I don’t personally relate with most lyrical content in black music, does that mean it’s crap?

    Reply

    //////////Reply by Pyry
    //////////Posted

    @jennifer, Yes. The other option is that you’re ridiculous trying to ‘relate to’ rap lyrics about ‘driveby shootings’, ‘gangbanging’ (both in the social and sexual meaning of the word) and ’selling crack cocaine to black kids in your hood’.

    You being a white woman leaves you in a difficult position to listen to/get music. Conceptualcore is about issues too complicated for you. Since you can’t chill with your bros, you can’t truly get the essence of the chillwave. Maybe the only option left for you is to listen to those indie artists singing about relationships/feminist issues/social issues in microscale/’other indie female bullshit’.

    Reply

    //////////Reply by Wut
    //////////Posted

    @ Pyry: 70% of rap and hip-hop music is consumed by white men. What does that say about 1) who is being “ridiculous” and trying to “‘relate’ to rap lyrics about ‘driveby shootings’ etc? and 2) who is really propagating these images of the black community that you cite as so prevalent in rap lyrics?

    To say that if your own personal life doesn’t directly relate to lyrical themes, means you can’t understand or enjoy a diversity of music is ridiculous. If I listen to a song written by a man that’s talking about the painful experience of a breakup or the death of a loved one, does that mean I can’t truly understand or relate to it, just because I’m not a man, even if I’ve experienced the loss of someone I cared about? NO.

    I think St. Vincent is great. Not sure what the point in posting this is, other than to embarass her. I’d be weary of saying that most guys who like “Female Indie Alt Celeb Musicians” are freaks like the guy in this video, but it shouldn’t be such a shock that guys will fantasize sexually about female singers, and girls will do the same when it comes to men. Just because that’s a natural thing doesn’t mean you can’t actually enjoy the music itself. That’s just feminist B.S. being espoused by a man. Sad.

    Saying that you should turn off your sex drive when listening to music shows someone out of touch with their own sexuality. But that doesn’t automatically make someone a weirdo stalker, which you seem to suggest.

    Carles, how does it make you feel when all the people commenting on your site mimic your style and phrasing and spelling? Does it make you proud in a sense, like you’ve created something that others enjoy and like using and think is valuable in some sense or another? Does it make you feel sad, like these people can’t think of any other way to communicate or articulate themselves and are just ripping off your “personal brand,” either to fit in or, by some total misreading, separate themselves through some imaginary posturing as “the next Carles?” I’ve only been to your site a few times but I really like it, and each time I visit it I try to remind myself that I have to come back more often to check it out and see what you’ve been thinking about; but the comment sections just make me feel sad. Sometimes a comment will make me feel really protective of whoever wrote it, because they obviously must be very self-conscious to just completely give over their method of communicating to an attempt at replicating yours; it’s like when I see a kid who tries to act exactly like the cool kid, the result being just heartrendingly pitiful, where you end up almost liking the imitator more than the “original” kid because he seems to have a lot more to deal with in terms of confidence and feelings of self-worth; you just want him to do well and be well and happy, which he probably isn’t because he’s trying so hard to be someone else. But, by the same token, the pitiful aspect of it just makes me resent the “imitator,” who can’t seem to craft any identity remotely of his own, impossible though this may be. If you came across your site, would you like it?

    @Ain’t No Junk, the whole point of this site is that hipsters are just style-clones. That’s the irony, their search for being “authentic” is itself being a conformist.

    I think Carles is a smart guy but even I can’t tell if he really thinks being “authentic” is just a brand, or if he’s completely oblivious to the fact that one can genuinely be authentic by dropping their allegiance to “brands” in the first place.

    @Molly, Sorry you and everyone’s so mad. I don’t go to this site that much, and, in all honesty, I did look at other postings just to be sure I wasn’t repeating something that I was sure had to have been said, and I definitely didn’t want to just shit on everyone or come off as some douche,; I see how I did, though, and I got carried away with and then bored by the cool kid and the cool kid imitator analogy and ended up not really even doing anything except being an asshole, and really, I am sorry about that, because I hate assholes. No, I wouldn’t like my comment if I came across it; is that unusual? Do people like any of their stuff when they come across it? The comment was totally lazy and I got bored and stopped before I really said anything; I guess I didn’t know how bonkers everyone would go, but apparently this is what most comment spaces are like: I remember reading a Times article about it a little while ago about that, about how people new to comment sections are totally thrown off by them. Essentially what I was wondering was what people think the comments can be for. Carles does such a good job of couching these thoughts about “authenticity” – things I think most people think about, at least most of the people who come to this site; and it’s something he’s so good at not explicitly make fun of or just wearing open-hearted on his sleeve: his mixture of wariness of both is just so good – with concerns about other topics, and the result is just really smart and engaging and touches I think really acutely on a lot of things; and then most of the comments do – no matter how many times it’s been said, although really I didn’t intend to be just the dick who said it this time; I really thought I’d scanned at least the recent comments – come off as just these little sad unfunny imitations. And is that part of Carles’ intention? Does he know that most comments will just imitate him and that this will make some point of without him even having to say anything? What do the comments add to the site that Carles didn’t already put there? Are the comments just fulfilling what Carles wants them to? Do they add to the site or just kind of augment its arguments? I should’ve checked again for these other douches’ comments, because I’m probably just reiterating stuff board’s already gone apeshit over a thousand times and I don’t want to cause that guy any more stress, but I’m really just sincerely wondering. And probably this just either isn’t the right space for it or it’s already been discussed or it’s just not even that interesting, which it’s not, which is what makes me wonder why I’m even responding again. But I am sorry if I just took a dump in the keg, especially if I just did it again.

    I agree with everything you said and someone said the same thing to me once when I expressed an opinion (note: I didn’t attack anyone) about something Carles had raised which i found fascinating.

    It’s that whole story about not ‘getting it’, which is cool, if that’s what you’re about. I don’t think it’s that difficult to ‘get’, though, really. It would be interesting though to gain perspective on what HRO commenters were thinking about Carles’ posts. If it could be like Tao Lin’s blog comments circa 2006 when Tao used to debate with people and some really interesting things where thrown around.

    But anyway, if people are having fun with it, then why not? Maybe they don’t have anything to say and are just bored or whatever.

    I’ve found it’s mostly best to just read the posts and be done with it. Leave the comments. That’s what I usually do, but sometimes, like now, I skim through them and try to find somewhere where someone is giving an opinion. Which is how I found your comment, which I enjoyed reading, by the way.

    Stay up.

    Feel like I can’t relate to female indie human beings like Taylor ‘Beyonce’ ‘Johnathan’ Swift’s. ‘You Belong To Me’ brings up issues of underage sex/sweaty handjobs, voyeurism, and human trafficking [via 1 human being 'belonging' to another]. Feel like these are ‘deviant’ themes yall. Feel like we need more censorship in the indiesphere. Feel like things r getting 2 ‘XXXtreme.’ Feel scared.

    weird, i was recently thinking about this and now you blogged about this. seems like we’re on the same wavelength. maybe not.

    i don’t genuinely like any girl bands/singers, feel like i’m being semi-sarcastic by listening to them. where is the female radiohead or an-co or anything? seems like women have to work a lot harder for respect in the alternative music world. i mean look at the last fm charts, it’s all bro bands. if i was a girl right now i’d probably be pissed or try and be like “there are great girl bands, just no one pays attention, like mika miko” but deep down know that I was lying, then i would probably go buy a micro-korg and start making weird songs and added friends on myspace.

    @CARLES JUNIOR,
    yeah. i don’t really like girl artists. i am a girl. i don’t do it on purpose. I do enjoy when female vocals or other musical skills accompany males musicians. THey just can’t stand alone. And i don’t get why. I think it has to do with the way girls are programed by society that makes them unable to be good artists.
    The coolest chicks are the ones who think more like men… You know. girls are always worried about what other people think about them, which makes them less confident and less bold. Less able to make decisions on their own. Girls have been taught to value themselves based on how others see them. Where men see themselves how they want to see themselves.
    Girls are taught at a young age to fill their minds with information about makeup, fashion and celebrities, where boys are taught to think more about more practical things. i hate girls.

    i must agree it seems there aren’t many good chick musicians these days, famous or not.

    browsing through my library, i realize most of musicians are male, even though i am a girl.

    but i think kim gordon’s done some good stuff. the last free kitten album had a few good tracks. are cibo matto or death by chocolate still around? dunno. most of the music i listen to is older anyway. definently recommend delta 5 if you wanna hear some good chick music.

    I once accidentally saw St. Vincent perform. It was ok.

    I think this is a good Carles post. I don’t totally agree with it though… Bjork, Fleetwood Mac, random house/r’n'b/gospel/soul tracks, the B-52s, Blondie, Yoko Ono, uh lots of other female vocalists are great and their vocals aren’t dependent on their looks or heterosexual male desire (but their “general aesthetic” does contribute to their sound).

    it seems like more girls dont “‘make it’ as an indie artist” in general… not via sexism as objectification but via sexism of males telling each other that girls live in a ‘fucking dreamworld’.

    Most alt music seems like it comes from a fucking dreamworld. Examples pls of male indie music that is more real-world based (non-dreamworld) than female music.

    Y is non-dreamworld music better 2 u?

    I liked the line about pitchfork4girls- instead of having men evaluate women. But, first of all- I want a word to describe females that are not girls but not women. There’s “guys” for males- but females are limited to being “girl” (young and naive sounding) or “woman” (A 22-yr.-old is not the same as a 30-yr.-old. I want it differentiated.) And second of all- women do the same thing to men. Yes we like good music- but we also like good music with attractive men involved in the making of that music. And perhaps- music can sometimes be less good but their attractive singer makes it better. We all just want to sleep with each other. I know that when I’m at shows I pay attention to comments about ‘the hot guitarist’ or ’sexy keyboardist’. You don’t often hear comments about the ‘rad guitar riff’ though.
