I recently watched this Public Service Announcement filmed by some Latina High School Reject. Apparently, ‘bullying’ is a huge problem in public and private high schools these days. I am not sure if this is a ‘new problem’, or possibly a problem that has ‘been around for a long time.’ According to the government ‘bullying’ is a bad thing, but in this blog post, Carles will controversially suggest that bullying is natural selection.
I feel like bullying ‘might be natural’ and we should let it run its course whenever it happens. I have read in science textbooks that all living organisms are ‘naturally selecting’ the strongest to survive. For some reason, humans believe that every human has the right to ‘live life peacefully’/thrive/success/make money without ‘going through tough times.’ I feel like animals in the wild are ‘bullies’ too. They find a way to intimidate the weak, kill them off early and eat them 2 stay alive.
It seems like we might need to keep the bullied alive so that they can perform ‘menial jobs’ when they grow up. They learn how to ‘take shit’ so that they can prepare for being at the bottom of society when they are older/are trapped in their lives’.
According to this youtube video, 160,000 kids stay home from school every day to avoid being bullied. It seems like it is reasonable to conclude that all of these kids are ‘fucking pussies’ or possibly ‘fucking fggts.’ It seems like there has to be some sort of ‘root cause’ explaining why they are not willing to change, or perhaps they do not have parents who are wealthy/educated enough to ‘make sure that their son/daughter has the tools to fit in.’ Would be ‘devastated’ if I knew why my son/daughter didn’t fit in, and there was nothing I could do about it. Like what if I also thought my son/daughter was a ‘dork’, and I sorta thought the school bully ‘knew what was up.’ Would I be a bully, too?
There’s really a difference between ’simple bullying’ (stealing lunches, typical actions+words that bring out the bully’s insecurities) and ’socially acceptable bullying.’ In a way, rich school districts ‘bully’ to ensure the ‘wrong kind of kids’ end up at their schools [via poors / coloureds / less fortunate]. You and your bff bully the entire world by not letting any1 else have a friendship like yallsz. Sometimes u need to embrace exclusivity to make sure relationships/social status ‘means something.’ If every1 had money/the same colour skin, the world would not be a better place–there would be way 2 many issues 2 deal with.
I saw this kewl graphic on the internet about ‘bullying’, and I feel like my internet website might be some sort of bully. Perhaps a ‘cyber bully.’ Maybe I should ‘trademark’ that term since the internet is about to get really popular so that I can ‘make mad money’ in case it becomes a catchy buzzword.
Seems like most of these words+phrases are ‘natural defense mechanisms.’ U need to protect ur tribe. U can’t just accept ‘any loser’ into your tribe. Seems like sometimes u need to ’step on other people’ to make sure ur brand is strong + authentic. Not every1 was meant to fit in.
Overall I feel confused about ‘Public Service Announcements.’ Who pays for these productions, and how can I build a career where I am consulted to ‘make these ads seem raw and authentic.’ I want to be on some sort of strategic team that ensures The PSA Brand has a sweet typeface that tweens can relate to. I want to be in charge of ‘convincing a tween celeb that our cause is important.’ I am not necessarily interested in ‘making the world a better place’, but I would like to work with a team of people who are in some sort of project where they get caught up in the spirit of ‘thinking that they are making the world better’ (I would only want this career for only 3-6 months.)

I do think bullying is natural, and I don’t think it goes away with age. People who like bullying/being controlling might go into management or something where they are paid to do it.

Bullying doesn’t really work toward survival of the species when it breeds school shooters and other wackos. Maybe it works in nature but not in a society where a pissed-off misfit has access to assault rifles and other toys that end the party for all of us. @OG, you obviously know nothing about natural selection/evolution. Natural selection works at a individual genetic level, not a societal/group level. A “gene” that produced bullies would benefit the individual and its progeny only. There is no “survival of the species,” only survival of the individual.

@Siik, OG had a good point. We honestly don’t live in a world where survival of the fittest is still at play, because we are no longer playing to simply survive. This simply doesn’t go hand in hand with the technologically advanced/civilized society we are part of. All sorts of genes are still passed on that probably shouldn’t be passed on, but that’s just how it is now.
Of course natural selection works at an individual level. I don’t think he was disputing that. However, “fittest” is not the most accurate term – you had to be a sociable creature in order to have the best chance of survival. Working for the species is also working for yourself, in this respect.

@ Jvac: if all individuals of a species are improved/evolved, the species would be better off. However, evolution doesn’t work that way.
My point in replying to OG was simply that a “gene” that created a propensity in bullied people to shoot others would not be passed down thru the generations.
Lets say for the sake of argument there are two “types” of people (and this is a gross simplification for the sake of an argument): shooters – those who when bullied shoot up their schools, and growers – those who when bullied grow stronger from the experience and develop a stronger character.
The shooters are hauled off to jail and spend the rest of their days behind bars being deprived of the chance to create offspring. After a few generations, the “gene” that caused someone to be a “shooter” instead of a “grower” would have not been passed down, and the behavior of shooting would die off.
Growers on the other hand would have become stronger (socially or physically or emotionally etc) and would have produced offspring thereby passing down the “gene” for growing.
We ARE still playing in a world where survival of the fittest is still the supreme ruler. We just constantly redefine what it means to survive (that is, perhaps, one of the most defining characters of humans).
In the animal kingdom, survival of the fittest might mean physical strength. But in our world, fittest takes on different meanings. In our “advanced/civilized/technological society,” the fittest might mean many different things – those who are the most intelligent, or the wealthy, or the most trendy/fashionable etc…
Sorry for the long response. Very interesting subject. I think evolution’s role in modern society is interesting especially when paired with how the internet has created a more unified pop culture which in turn has created new more ubiquitous perceptions of what it means to be the “fittest.”

I was aloof in HS but everyone accepted and liked me. when my dad was in high school he worked at a vet’s office. their family dog was rly old and got cancer in her jaw, and her face started turning inside out. it was rly painful for the dog, and would eventually kill it, but his parents just couldnt have the dog put down. he knew the dog was going through ‘crazy pain’ so he stole some of the shit they use to ‘put dogs to sleep’ and had to put her down one night, then put her back in front of the fireplace, so it looked like the dog just passed away.
he used an extension cord he had in his car as a tourniquet.
i had a lizard as a pet. she was a bearded dragon. her name was ziggy. she ran away one time when i was cleaning her cage, and that was one of the most tragic pet losses i have ever had. ugh. cried for days. fucking loved that lizard.

While it is alt to embrace post-tolerance to a degree, in the scenario of bullying it is not. Rampant, anathematic bigots can make one’s life hell, but in reality the bully is the weaker of the parties (via using physical force instead of words to “express their ‘feelings’”).

Is bullying really that common anymore? I go to a huge(4000+ kids) high school and barely, if ever, see kids being bullied. It seems like kids just mind their own business most of the time and don’t really bother others.

bullies and sociopaths should get beat down hard. It is unfortunate that acts of self defense/defending others get you in trouble/suspension at school these days. When I have kids I’ll reward them if they break the noses of kids who make fun of awkward/retarded/special ed students. If you don’t resist bullies they get worse and produce more bullies.
Cyberbullying is stupid – there shouldn’t be any laws regarding free speech on the internet (within the limits of what’s considered free speech). It’s legal to call people fat, stupid, or whatever, but it’s not nice.

I suppose the next thing people will be saying is that stalking someone is normal too. People shouldn’t be unreasonably harrassed by stalkers or bullies. Harsh joking around and life lessons being learned is one thing but a continuous act of bullying is something different.
