I often romanticize ‘moving to the city’ and utilizing public transportation. I have grown up in suburbia, and when I go to design school next semester, I surely won’t be taking a car. It seems like I could really get in touch with the ‘ebb and flow’ of the city/the cultural zeitgeist of the common man by riding buses/subways/monorails every where.
But then I saw this video where a Chinese woman and a Black woman ‘go at it.’ It seems dangerous, like there is a whole ‘cultural disconnect’ underlying their shouting match. I understand that blacks and AZNs h8 one another, but it seems like they should settle this type of disagreement outside of the bus by having a constructive conversation about their hardships, eventually understanding that they are ‘basically the same person, except they speak different languages.’ I feel worried that some sort of ‘act of minority angst/social repression’ would take place on the public transportation vessel that I am riding on. What if it was 2 teenage minorities with guns? What if a group of minorities go on some sort of ’shooting spree’/'hostage takeover’ of the bus? Sorta wish that I could make them realize that no1 on the bus is ‘that much richer’ than them. Sorta wish u could channel their angst into something useful, like a ‘kewl new genre of music’ [via horrorcore 2.0] instead of acts of violence.
Worried/concerned. I feel like I want to depend on public transportation, but I just want to be safe + stay alive. I think that ‘uncultured’ people are not able to appreciate the beauty of public transportation since they have never owned a car/had their parents buy one for them. It seems like if they understood the hardships of car ownership (insurance payments, oil changes, neverending maintenance, have to pay summer job teens 2 wash ur car, finding parking spots, etc), then maybe they would chill out, and realize that public transportation is truly the best way to live? Maybe if they understood our nation’s foreign dependence on oil, they would ‘appreciate’ the public service they are doing by utilizing a public resource.

it’s alright, i live in brooklyn and i’ve been in almost every part in new york. it’s not as bad as you think. i go to school in a different borough, so i have to take mta everyday. it’s not dangerous, unless you’re going on bus/subway cart with someone who looks suspicious in the middle of the night. so yeah, don’t sweat it. it’s fine and i’m a girl. every so often there’s your everyday creepo or smelly hobo, but not much out of the unusual. :)

@anonymousse, I definitely do not miss taking public transportation in Toronto. By growing up in the city, I depended on public transportation to get around. Unfortunately, it delayed my interest and motivation towards getting a drivers license. I have just started to drive and although I have yet to experience some of the negatives of driving (i.e. traffic), I think I will enjoy it better than my days spent aquished on subway trains and mixed with crazy people…

sometimes when I’m chilling on the 7 train, I look around me and see all the minorities and assume that they’re all thinking “it sure is nice being a part of this whole ‘new york experience’ together”. but then I ‘critically analyze’ the situation later and realize that they are probably just ‘fucking pissed about fare hikes/late trains/having to commute’ instead of feeling like its a gift from jesus christ (the savior) to have an extensive subway system to ‘rock it’ on.

I don’t know how bad MUNI or BART really are…. I hope this stuff is the exception rather than the rule, because driving in SF doesn’t seem to be that practical.
I’m so used to having a car, clearly from this video the rule for public transportation is “don’t get involved”. I guess you just have to learn to sit in front of chaos and decide that it’s “not your problem”.

Apparently Rosa Parks needed two seats, not one, and the Asian woman with all her groceries had no where to put them. The other riders on the bus are telling her to hit her, which she only does in response to the black woman’s initiation. I’ve been on p.t. (buses) in L.A. My fellow commuters were mostly ethnic minorities like AZNs, Latinos and black people, but a lot of them were ‘unemployed/possibly sociopathic people’ or senior citizens. P.t. didn’t seem as ‘cool’ as I thought it would be, but it was an ‘authentic socio-cultural experience’ and I think u should totally do it when u are @ design school for ‘personal growth’ and to ‘open your eyes to humanity’s suffering.’

Ride a bike everywhere if you live “in the city.” Much cheaper than cars or public transport, and most likely you can get places in less time. You have more of a chance of getting hit by a car/hitting a pothole and getting injured, but you don’t have to deal with backed up traffic, finding a parking spot, getting gas, or waiting for the bus or whatever.

i lived in the Bay Area, CA for a year. one day on the bus to college (at 9 am) several thuggish dudes got on, cornered me at the back of the bus, punched me, and took my iPhone 3G. dead serious. 9 am!!
public transportation can be dangerous. i would say as a rule do NOT ride at the back unless you’re with a posse of friends, for your own safety.

once i rode the bus to work cause i didnt have a car/ride
it was scary. first i didnt have exact change, so i had to buy a transfer, even tho i was staying on one bus.
then there was a bro with an army bag sitting across from me. i think he was coloured, there were probably drugs+guns in it.
there were elderly in front of me
there was a very homeless man behind me, he didnt liek when i looked at him.
i felt soo awkward eating my protien bar+drinking bottled water while on my journey. felt like the protein bar alone had more nutrition than the homeless man had had in a week, but i hadnt had lunch, so i was rly hungry.
we got to a stop, almost to where i was going to get off, and this black woman waiting for the bus collapsed!
these 2 other black ladies sorta held her up, and tried to set her down on the sidewalk. the bus driver was like ‘well, i gotta go’ and started to close the door, but the 2 black ladies who hadnt fainted were like ‘wait, hold on’ and tried to get on the bus, leaving the woman passed out on the side walk. they explained that they didnt know her, and that she had just given plasma, and was now unconscious.
someone called the ambulance, who soon showed up, along with a firetruck and another ambulance. it probably cost the woman like $400 to pay for the ambulance call, and she only got like $40 for selling her plasma.
how is she supposed to buy alcohol+crack to help her 4get the shittie situation she was born into?
i took several pictures with my Blackberry Tour, and uploaded them to facebook, along with captions explaining what was happening. felt like i was part of something greater than myself.
i missed my stop and had to get off right across the street from the prison and walk the rest of the way to work. i was rly scared.
and that was the first and last time i ever rode the bus.

Having taught in a large public urban H.S. for over 33 years, I have witnessed these types of confrontations on a regular basis. See this video just reminds me of how much I do not miss the conflict now that i am retired.
I suspect that most public public school teachers would rate this particular confrontation fairly low on the seriousness scale. Most likely not even resulting in a suspension for either participant….

buses are free for under 18’s in london. that means every little prick and his friends can start shit for free, anytime. dare i say they are usually minorities? i do. also, public transport is mad slow. doesn’t make me feel authentic in any way. get a vee dub golf and flip people off. with some washed out track blaring. (i hope i still like him one blog month from now)

Once i was taking the bus and this old philipino man stood up from his seat and took a leak behind one of the seats. i didnt know what he was doing at first but then i saw him turn around and there was a fatty piss stain on his pants. then i looked down and saw a bunch of yellow liquid race down the bus as it stopped at a red light. i was shocked. then this young gangsta kid got up from his seat and started laughing out loud.im going to bed now.
