The Evolution of the Chillwave Genre: What’s Next 4 ‘chill wave’ artists.

As yall know, in the 2k9 post-AnCoGrizzPhoenixBear world, the indiesphere generated a new genre of music to love/follow/listen 2 called ‘chillwave.’ Most authentic alts were there to watch the chillwave genre ‘get off the ground’, getting ‘tons of mad blog hype buzz’ from relevant mp3 blog tastemakers. Now that chillwave has grown up a lil bit, chillwave artists are required to ‘tour’, and take their band/brand to the next level.

A key element of the chillwave era was that the members of your band/project were required to be unknown/from an obscure place. Sorta weird how these bands consisting of ‘Jim Nobody from Nowhereville USA’ are now becoming ‘must-see’ acts on ‘the festival circuit’, etc. Sorta feel pressured to see them before ‘too many people know about them.’ I honestly feel like the first time I see a blogbuzz band live will be the last time I see them. I guess the Arcade Fire was right when they said, “Funeral.”

These are the three ‘largest’ chillwave artists, and an analysis of their live performances.

Live Performance: Washed Out (A much ‘hyped’ CMJ debut in NYC).

As you can see, WASHED OUT bro went with a ‘1 man band behind a Macbook’ setup, utilizing some ’sweet visuals’, and also doing some live singing. It seems to be a good representation of the music, but how can Washed Out convert his show into a ‘touring machine.’ Maybe he could ‘only play concerts in water parks [via wave pools] or something. I am not sure if WashedOutBro will have enough money to purchase a ‘daft punk pyramid.’ Maybe he could rent it while Daft Punk is not touring.

I sorta wish all bands had some sort of megastructure, similar to the Daft Punk Pyramid. It seems like concerts might be more exciting that way.

I have heard live reviews calling Ernest Greene ‘very attractive.’ It seems like he has the opportunity to brand himself as ‘one of the most handsome men in indie music’, sort of attracting tons of females to his shows, and building up alternative resentment [via untalented/angsty altbros]. Ultimately, this model was ‘very successful’ for Panda Bear’s live show. I think Washed out should ‘build solid visuals’, and then protect his brand by ‘only playing relevant shows where he can make mad bank.’  Possibly try to crowd out the ‘generic DJs’ and steal their potential earnings.

Live Performance: Neon Indian

Neon Indian was apparently ‘1 bro making an album in his bedroom’, but his live performance consists of 3 additional band members. It seems like the ‘4 person band’ model is ‘very cross-over-able.’  This is important to capture the attention of mainstream bros, etc.  Most mainstreamers can really only consume live music if there is ‘a band of 3+ members’ or if there is a rap crew milling around on stage.

I am not sure what my expectations of Neon Indian are. Did I want them to ‘be a band’, ‘be 1 bro on stage’, or maybe just ‘be the next AnCo.’ It seems like it might be ‘economically feasible’ to lay off one of the band members and work towards a mainstream+conceptual textural live show.  It seems like they really ‘look like a band.’  I feel like the Neon Indian bro might be implementing a boy-band-esque formula, where the members of the band are disposable & constantly feel pressure to add value/’look like a member of an alt band’/understand their role in the overall project.

Seems like Neon Indian might become one of those ‘bands that plays at every festival’/comes to my local alt scene 2x per year.  Has the genre of ’sorority girls who go to music festivals’ already caught on to Neon Indian?

Live Performance: Memory Tapes/Memory Cassette

Apparently, this ‘chillwave’ band does not perform live. I feel like this band was actually ‘pre-chillwave’ but sort of got ‘lumped in afterwards’ just cuz they had a few chillwave characteristics, but didn’t really make pure chillwave music. I will probs download free MP3s by this band 4evr, but won’t buy their vinyls until I am a rich bro in a meaningful loft with a shelf of vinyls.

******
Which chillwave band has the best/worst live model?
Which chillwave band will ‘make it’/'go mainstream’/be ‘the most authentic’?
Which chillwave band will u see first?
Which chillwave band will lead to the implosion of the chillwave genre?
Which chillwave artist will escape/out-live the chillwave era?
What’s ur #1 musical memory of 2k9?

Music is in such a strange state right now. On the one hand there is so much affordable music-making technology available. However, no one pays for music and if one guy tries to tour by himself it appears boring, not to mention it is extremely expensive for the artist. I fear that with the profit aspect of music making now evaporated, that innovative/challenging/technically proficient music will diminish. I do not think that things will stay this way forever. As bandwidth increases and people start stealing FILMS on a massive scale like how they now steal/swap/share (whatever you want to call it) music, the movie industry will pull as many strings as they can in Washington to make it stop. Hollywood is so much more powerful than the music industry. Just look at the credits of any movie. There are literally tens of thousands of people (camera/wardrobe/makeup/catering/sound/editing/CGI people…the list is infinite and equates to a virtual Army) working for the Hollywood content machine. When they start to see their profits shrinking they will not be quiet about it. They will cause a big change. This might take 5 to 10 years, but the free content/downloading party will end someday. Then innovation will begin to arise. I think we will be entering (or may already be in…this whole decade is nothing but 1980’s nostalgia. Is this a throwback of our collective psyche to return to a simpler time because of the horror/trauma of 9/11? [it did set the stage for the whole 000’s.]) a creative dark age soon however.

nah, music is nothing more than art. Its sad that our society has made you think that the artist is entitled to a material aspect because of what he/she created. We have to understand art is priceless, not a marketing plan that we try to classify the masses with. 80’s nostalgia going on? duh, but every decade of nostalgia is going on currently. Music is going through a phase just like society is right now. No matter what, good music will always be made, whether it will be heard to the masses for sales is a remedial attempt at trying to understand our “current state” of music.

anyway, I only recently got into Neon Indian, but, since my new favorite genre is (american) apparently “work-out music,” [via side poll] I’m suppaa down.
Feel like it kinda makes sense that these bands don’t tour a lot. Music made on a computer seems like it is probably meant to be listened to on one (or headphones or something), but music obviously made by people in a room is generally the kind of stuff i want to see live.

yall, lemme be real with yall for a second and talk about Washed Out like I did in another post, but it was irrelevant at that time.

the one show that he played in NYC last week (the one the video was taken from) was hella awkward. I don’t know if it’s immediately noticeable in the YouTube video, but that’s him singing poorly over his ’studio’ vocal track. the show started off with some really odd, ’somber’ piano songs with some random bro who was probably his uncle. then it was kind of a relief when he started playing his songs that we’re familiar chilling out to, but nothing REALLY improved. he just played the songs and did awkward stuff like clapping for himself and raising his hands in the air to the crowd to ‘get more pumped to clap with him/for him’. no improvisation, just really ‘DJing’ his tracks and doing ‘karaoke’ if ‘karaoke’ had vocal tracks also.

I can understand that this was his first show, and that’s fine, but it was odd to see in this setting. in the past, someone with this amount of hype playing in a packed new york venue will have ‘cultivated’ a ‘decent’ live show by that point and will have developed at least somewhat of a ’stage presence’. Washed Out bro had none of this experience, yet he played on the same ‘level’ as ‘experienced’ musicians and ‘musicians we’d assume would have a great live show’ already. I know this is very obvious that this sort of stuff would be the case when looked at from the Internet-perspective, as we saw the chillwave genre grow up on blogs (the first full genre ever to do this?), but actually seeing them plucked from the Pitchforks/HROs/GvBs/private torrent sites really makes the ‘reality’ of it all hit. the ‘rock star persona’ is irrelevant in this case. and in Washed Out’s, the history of ever guaranteeing a successful show/turnout isn’t either.

I compare this to something we kind of ‘experimented’ with in 2k7, with sensation Tay Zonday. the quality of music is different – we laughed at/with Tay’s songs and genuinely ‘cool out’ to chillwave, the artist is in the same position. insane internet hype leading them to mass exposure in traditional ‘arenas, like how Tay played shows with Girl Talks/Dan Deacon and was on Kimmel within a month/months after being meme’d. and he was hella awkward.

really I think this only REALLY applies to Washed Out’s case… since Neon Indian has played shows before and kind of ‘has it naturally’ and Memory Tapes is the dude from Hail Social who has toured before but just doesn’t want to know because he ‘doesn’t want to’.

all I’m sayin is, interesting case… interesting times we in. I know ‘long posts’ aren’t wanted on HRO… people seem to just want to generate ironic hate/love. but since this IS a healing place for alts who think a lot, I hope we can all band together and think about this genre. just want to generate feelings.

I think we should start a Chillwave Listing Project/’Genome’ where we compile a list of all ‘clear and distinct’ chillwave artists and how they function within the genre

    I’m gonna try to start

    Top ‘Dawgs’:

    Neon Indian
    Washed Out
    Memory Tapes/Memory Cassettes/Weird Tapes

2nd rate buzz bands that u forgot about because they stopped getting buzz or have difficult names:

    Delorean
    Tory Y Moi
    jj

    A poor man’s chill:

    Small Black
    Universal Studios Florida

Questionably ‘chillwave’/more so fitting an unnamed, varied lo-fi genre that emerged in late 2008/early 2009 but now seems like a different breed of chillwave in the present context (possibly proto-chill):

    Ducktails
    Air France
    Nite Jewel
    U.S. Girls

can anyone add to this? possibly look up some Last.fm ’similar artists’?

Got an email bout a week ago from Mr. Tapes saying that a live show is in the works. Cool since he’s from about a half hour from where I live. Better not go play New York… I think Memory/Weird/Cassette Tapes is more bedroomDAWave than chillwave.

chillwave transcendz hype/lasting genre themes.. peeps who like it will forever understand it and be healed by it. peepz will continue to make music in the same vein and it may need no name…

Scarlett Johanny invented Chill-wave and glo-fi on her Tommy waitz covering debut. Why doesn’t Carlez ever talk about that?
