Hello all. My name is Rebecca, and I’ll be taking over as managing editor here at hipster runoff. My friends call me Becca, so I’ll give you that honor since you’ll be stopping by for your daily dose of interweb goodness. For those of you who don’t think I am qualified, know that I have worked for various publications that I have been passionate about and this journey will be no different. Yes, yes. I know it’s cliched, but I was that girl who was editor of her high school newspaper, then went on to one of America’s top journalism programs at Northwestern University. I have a passion for new media and emerging technologies. As you have noticed, things are changing. iPhones, Kindles, and blogs–what we’ll use tomorrow, simply nobody knows.
I am a true progressive individual, willing to do whatever it takes to meet a late night deadline, or respond to the critics…yes, sometimes there will be haters, but if you stick to strong journalistic principles, no one can tear you apart. The power of the written word is stronger than ever in the new world. Twitter, blogs, wall-to-walls… we all just want to be heard, but it is the responsibility of media leaders to let the cream rise to the top.
I am not here to alienate Carles, or destroy what he built. While he was a very gifted writer, he was more of a blogger, and I am looking to transition this website into a new and exciting era of authentic writing. I want to help this community grow stronger. I have been reading this site since late 2008, and I have always been impressed by the strong community bonds within the microcommunity. However, we can make this community even stronger. What this blog needs is a strong female opinion to counterbalance the overwhelming male voice that holds it back from reaching a wider audience and attracting the advertisers it is capable of utilizing. Most men are inconsiderate towards the needs and feelings of women, but maybe you male readers could learn a thing or two.
Starting tomorrow, I will be posting my daily column tentatively titled A Day in the Life of Becca: The Tales of a Perfectly Troubled Hipster Girl where I’ll try to let you guys know what is going on in my personal life, while at the same time, giving women and females advice about how to deal with their problems. From boys, to health issues, to picking out the perfect outfit for a night on the town, there’s nothing that I won’t be willing to cover in a very friendly tone. I’ve got tons in common with you…Just a small town gal who moved to the city…(and NO, life is not just like an episode of Sex And the City) It’ll just be us girls…but maybe the boys can read if they want some tips on how to get on our good sides… Ha…like they’ll ever learn….
Our eventual goal is to post 10-20 times per day, bringing you newsbits, webjunk, viral vids, and opinions on some of the most important trends and, for lack of a better word, memes, of the day. Let us know what you want to see. YOU are the reader! and this is your site!

It would be phenomenal if HRO allowed us commenters to post – think it may make the blog more relevant, as the majority of us seem to lament the days when Carles was discussing AnCo, AmAppy, or GvB vs. p4K. Hey girls! Here’s a controversial, yet successfully tested way to make the hippest friends. I know many girls were once rural hippies but are now urban hipsters, and they can attest how pot (which is safer than the hipper drug, cocaine) helped them to gain access to friends who used to only talk to them in their dreams. Here goes:
How-to #1: How-to marijuana can be used to gain entry to the hippest social circles.
(Skip to step 4 if you are a seasoned stoner)
Step 1) Acquaint yourself with the herb. If you have never smoked before, ask friends if they or anyone they know can “smoke you out.” If not, go to taco bell around midnight and ask all red-eyed patrons if they know “where the dro (is) at”. Once you have the herb, or found someone to “smoke you out,” proceed to Step 2.
Step 2) Get high with your friends or by your self. Remember to inhale! If you’re alone and wondering what to do, look up “how to roll a joint” on the internet.
Step 3) Gauge effects. If you think you can handle yourself while high, then proceed to step 4. If not, you have two options: 1) smoke every day for 2 weeks – gauge yourself again after 2 weeks. 2) give up on this pathetic quest.
Step 4) (The MOST important step) Find “killer” weed. Ask all the boys and girls with dreadlocks on campus who has the “most dank” marijuana. Don’t settle for anything less than $70 per 1/8th.
Step 5) Assuming you are at least aware of who the hip girls are, attend a party in which said girls are attending (facebook stalking can help). Bring a pre-rolled joint with (this is key) th you.
Step 6) While at the party, wait for a group of no less than 3 hip girls to all go outside for a smoke. Wait 2 minutes and then follow. Walk up to the girls and ask them if anyone has a light. When they ask, “is that a joint?” respond with, “that’s right. Helps me with anxiety.”
Step 7) two possible scenarios: girls say “oh really? we’re pretty anxious too, can we get a hit?” if this happens, try to remain cool while you offer it up and break into a conversation about anything but yourself. assuming all goes well, tell them that you can get more if they want any and exchange digits. If they aren’t interested, tell them that you didn’t think they would’ve wanted to anyway, and when they ask you “oh, why’s that?” make some light joke at their expense and walk away.
follow up – if all went according to plan, the stoner girls will call you in the future and you will become stoner buddies. the non-stoner girls will recognize you in the future, and depending on your joke, might think you are kinda cool. If you remain funny and hip in conversations with them, just continue and things might work out for you!
