The Most Authentic/Relevant/Successful Artists of the Decade (The Best Albums/MP3s/Songs/Artists/Bands/Humans of the Decade)

Can’t believe it’s already been a decade. I’m trying to think about the person I used 2 be back in 1999. I wonder how familiar I am with that bro, or how much I respect him. Theoretically, I have grown up and become a more ‘cultured’ person with a developed+refined taste in all aspects of life, including my favourite music.

Piecing together ‘The Best Albums/Artists/Songs/Bands of the Decade’ seems tricky, like some sort of existential reflection of urself. I feel like most websites that focus on music create ‘best of year/decade’ lists that assume ‘indie music is the best music on the planet (+ a few African American Artists).’  We have evolved into a modern high-level, conceptual aesthetic that we must value, but we can also recognize important eras that ‘helped us get to where we are.’   It seems like that sort of neglects the impact of mainstream artists on mainstream fans. Just want 2 create a list that opens up a dialogue for the clash between ‘mainstream’ and ‘alt’ in this decade.

Do ‘album sales’ matter?

Do ‘online web critics’ opinions’ really matter?

If ur song is used in an NBA area/NFL football game/TV commercial, r u more successful than 90% of other artists?

How do gender roles+racial issues change our perception of music?

Are musicians just ‘entertainers’, and I am allowed to be entertained as I watch some1’s life fall apart?

Does ‘talent’ really matter?

Is ‘timeliness’ the most important element of a band’s formula 4 success?

I will attempt to group some of the most relevant artists of the decade into tiers, creating a multi-dimensional list.

These are 30 different tiers of artists. Each tier represents an artist/group of artists/movement/trend. I attempt to rank each tier, working towards the most relevant artist of the decade in Tier 1. The tiers are sometimes interchangeable, depending on your class/social background/ethnicity/gender/income level/ other demographic factors that make you YOU.

Tier 30: Bros Who Ruined Their Careers in the Past Decade

‘If u got girl problems I feel bad 4 u son. I’ve got 99 problems but a bitch aint 1.’ -Jay Z on managing ur life

Chris Brown

Chris Brown ‘beating the shit out of Rihanna’ is a story about a bro surrendering his opportunity to make mad bank for the next 20+ years. Remember when he was the next Michael Jackson/Usher/OJ Simpson?

Phil Spector

miss u. Can’t believe this bro produced the Beatles AND murdered some1.

Why do you have to be such a little bitch? What are you so cared of, can’t you just have a genuine opinion of who the best band was? Why couldn’t you just tell the truth and speak your mind and say Animal Collective was the best band of the decade. Carles, ‘No More Runnin’

@suicide fan, What gives you the idea that I’m uninformed? I’ve listened to every single Radiohead album in existence and was unimpressed with every one. The only respectable song they’ve composed is 15 Step, for the sole reason that it ACTUALLY has a tune. For the most part, moaning into a microphone at varying frequencies and calling it falsetto isn’t music to me. Its noise. The ‘conceptual melodies’ in the background all sound like something one would make up as they went along. Whether I’m in high school, college, or graduated completely is absolutely irrelevant. The Gods of ‘Getting Radiohead’ aren’t going to spontaneously bless me the moment a high school diploma is in my hand.

@Bebe, I don’t have a huge boner for radiohead either, but i would also nominate ‘just’ as a respectable song along with 15, though it is from the 90’s
and If I could kill one person on earth and get away with it, it would be tiger woods. Not because I hate him or anything, I just think it would be awesome to capitalize on all the residual tabloid exposure.

although, i am seriously doubting everyone’s alt cred who doesn’t like radiohead. && don’t give me the “there’s no tune” argument. there are tons of radiohead songs that have strong hooky melodies and follow an accesible verse-chorus form while still being sonically experimental and challenging.
karma police? climbing up the walls? just? no suprises? house of cards? national anthem? et cetera.

@Bebe, You’re a fucking idiot.. 15 step is the only good song? So you’ve only listened to the new album. You’re obviously in high school because you ended your comment with getting a diploma in your hand and you’re too young to remember creep, their first popular track which was in their garage band days and is much more simple and accessible. Just listen to their most popular songs and you’ll realize you’re wrong. I think mostly you wont understand radiohead because you’re a girl, but receiving your diploma might actually help you appreciate them more. Some things actually do take time ot grow into. Your ears aren’t ready yet. Actually just kill yourself.

This decade cap post was either the most honest reflection of a decade or one of the finest pieces of consumer demographic analyses i have ever read. It proves how easy it is to define a group of people via accommodation and exclusion – and shows how predictable and taxonomic our tastes really are – to a scary extent (if this is what some ahole blogger has on you – imagine what the cia can rack up on you). Unlike many other decade caps this list does not assume that we were all 22 years old for the past 10 years and accounts for maturing and refining of tastes realistically
    - just because someone like yo la tengo may have released some badass album in 2000 does not mean that we really gave a shit then (or do now) – Best part about this post was how important/cool it makes self-awareness. It is the only real way to grow.

@paul kemp, ya it is a really uncomfortable process, like getting naked at the doctor. sometimes i feel that way when i smoke pot – like i suddenly see through my own bullshit (other times i just feel like eatin’ snacks and watching the simpsons…but thats another story).

I think it is funny to try to imagine what we will be like in 20 – 30 years when we are middle aged – and what will become of our favourite artists who don’t die or fade away. Wouldn’t it be a total trip if Panda bear decided to make adult contemporary like Sting or Costello. Or picture yourself after a long day of work down at the old soylent green factory, you pick the kids up from space soccer practice then take the Mrs. out to see an evening of Justin Vernon singing crooner songs at the casino…

@Elie, this analysis ’sounds good’ but LIKE carles is not the CI&A and shit. for instance: take the song “ATLAS” by BTTLS (which wasn’t mentioned here)… I totes feel that song in such a meaningful way… my iTunes has XX,XXX songs on it… and NO Johnny Mayer (although I appreciate JM: The Brand/public figure)… my iTunes DOES have a lullaby album by Kathy Lee Gifford on it called Goodnight, Angel (yes, it really has a fake parental advisory sticker on it saying smthng like ‘warning: your kid will totes fall asleep 2 this shit’)… my pt is: my point is I work effing hard so that the carleseses and the government agencies of the world/USofA ‘got nothing on me’ [via king kong and the movie 'training day']… even though I realize that ‘doing this’ is an indictment in and of itself of my consumer sensibilites, and my place w/in some sort of weird/possibly unreal social demo/construct (but anyway in the end whathaveyou, if we’re all ’stealin music anyhowz, & not gettin caught’ what does ‘any of it’ even matter??? I think I would drink 1.5-20% more Mountain Dew if they used AnCo in a Do the Dew ad campaign… but honestly I ‘ve lost the tracks here w/ this reply// I just dont want the obamagov ninjaz on my ass, is that what u were implying[?]–I didnt get that ref….)

The wedding was second generation hippie offspring. The hippie parents started their own commune and eventually developed their own religion loosely based around Amish Christianity. So the wedding was a 20 minute sermon, 5 minutes of vows, and 30+ hour celebration of life, love, friends, and family.

@Ellie, Bixi ftw! My dad took me there for a genetics conference this fall the same weekend as the international freeski film festival. I asked random hipsters where I could safely buy weed on the street outside the Imposs(Muzion), Rahzel feat DJ JS-1 and Dj Premier show. The hipsters were chill bros and baguettes who smoked me up for free. It was super chill of them. The Dj Premier show was lame. I didn’t know where to find electronic dance music though. Who are The Twelves/Daft Punk/LCD Soundsystem of Montreal? (Unfortunately I didn’t know about Think About Life at that time in my life)

The true #1 human of the 2k decade can be measured easily. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has shown us that highest point of human existence is self actualization. The only individual who has reached this point in our decade is clearly Gucci Mane. Gucci is a man who has reverted to the basest forms of human desire, effectively toppling the pyramid. His self actualization is ironically going back to the very bottom echelon. All Gucci wants to do is get money, fuck bitches, and smoke trees. His personal brand can be identified with the Ache Tribe of South America, in that proximity to nature and base desires truly make an individual moral. It is this that causes an individual to cease surviving, and begin to live.

@dan-onymous, Probs will b hard 2 bring Carles’ brand 2 the academic world bc the profs/ppl in charge of bringing speakers 2 schools/kids who got 2400 on their SATs/etc won’t ‘get’ the HRO prose style [via the MLA]. Ivy League bros are bros who established their personal brands not by cultural association/disassociation, but rather by ‘fulfilling’ more ‘requirements’ than other bros [via 5.0s and varsity sports]. IvyBros can’t possibly ‘get’ the ‘meta’ of Carles’ first-person style bc the concept of self-identifying via culture is foreign to them (+/- mnstrm fashion). IvyBros are self-motivated, self-fulfilling bros who know what they want and don’t need to question the implications of the bullshit they use to get to ‘the top’ and therefore don’t need ‘culture’ to self-identify and self-brand. They just need carnal fulfillment.

does Carles lose his authenticity if he ‘breaks it down’ [via demo_analysis] so that 40+-y-o ProfBros can ‘get it’?

does Carles face a more scrupulous and therefore more formidable and less gratifying audience if he re-markets to IvyBros?

isn’t Carles a pessimistic hipster w/ low self esteem just like the rest of us, and risks losing the demo he so lovingly analyzes if he starts to ‘unpack’ it for the mnstrm IvyBros?

    did Carles go to Wharton/Stern/LSE/etc?

I thought that was pretty interesting on the whole. I am not sure that everyone wants to be American but whatever. Odd that for half of this time the whole of the UK were obsessed with The Libertines and Babyshambles and the U.S.A. I imagine have no idea who they are. Especially as they were top exponents of the ‘we hate Coldplay’ movement across the pond. Fuck it, I still like Radiohead and The Strokes; I don’t listen to them much now but, if someone asked, I’d say I liked them.

Just sat here for a while reading this. I have to say, I don’t agree completely with everything here, but I really appreciate the objective writing. It’s hard to ‘consume’ so much and not be swayed one way or the other. To stand far back and comment on the ’scene’ as a whole with such clarity is remarkable. I don’t see how you could actually listen to music and enjoy it though, seeing as everything must fit into a niche. Great article though.

Not enough respect to rap/hiphop, too much disrespect to female recording artists/misogyny. No Electroclash. Too American. A little too centered in the experiences of Carles age group (post college/mid 20’s). Too much/Not Enough 90’s. Other than that, blog post of the decade.

Parting thought; it’s amazing in hindsight how much of this stuff was not authentic/alt at all but completely corporate/market driven/mainstream/predictable.

Conclusion: We are all Entry Level.

feel like crles is slowly co-ordinating his brand to attract mainstreamers whilst maintaining elements of post-ironic, ‘alt-titude’ to educate them.

surprised on the lack of girl talk/aoki – bros who brought the ‘partay’ to the entry-lvl ‘good-time bro/ho’

will anyone ever find the perf alt breasts? did anyone save authentic SPARKS, just to drink it in front of uninformed inauthentic [decaffeinated] SPARKS consumers after the fact? what is the future of the altosphere? will m.i.a.’s bb be alt or mainstream? when will the Am Appy Empire finally collapse?

When I first read HRO, I was an ‘entry level alt’. By reading through mostly all of the memorable posts, Carles revealed to me the depth of the ‘indiesphere’ with regards to everything from tastemaking and how the indie scene ‘works’ to blogspeak. When you really do think about it, someone uninvolved in this music scene would not ‘get’ anything happening on HRO, which is such hilariously disgusting irony. And as I saw that, I realized that everything in the ‘indie’ scene is driven and governed and fueled by pretensions. To ‘tastemake’ essentially is just to ‘be pretentious’. That’s when I vowed to never advance past ‘entry level’. In my short time of listening to the music and consuming the memes of the scene, I was already heavily influenced by pretensions. I still am to a degree. It’s so hard to rid oneself of such things. But I don’t want to be controlled by them.

Lose your pretensions with me. Wake up and smell the bullshit. I think it’s the only way to fully enjoy music on all levels of ‘enjoy’-listening, making, learning.

I also realized truly how shitty our generation is. And how much I envy The Greatest Generation. They’re the shit. And I never say ‘the shit’.

Damn, didn’t want to be the essay commenter.

    @skim reader.,
I’d like to think that’s not true.

    I am not alt.
I was raised Southern Baptist (and still believe it, except for some minor theological differences. but i still identify with ‘Baptist’. and i feel like i need to say this due to the rep Baptists have….I love you, whoever you are reading this. i really do.)
I am conservative with some libertarian views. Hands off me, gov.
I only sort of dress like it.
I go to Texas A&M, one of the most conservative universities in the world (which surprised me with how many people that are ‘in’ with this music).
    etc.
    etc.

This music scene changed how I listen to and view music, and I absolutely love my new perspective.

So call me ‘transcended’ or not. I just don’t want to have gotten there through pretentiousness. I’m trying to say all this with humility, not pretensions.

I made a reply here earlier saying who Carles really is but he deleted it, or somebody did. What is Carles hiding? Why can’t we know who Carles is? Why does Carles refuse to attach a human being, a self, a narrative, a soul to the words he lets dissipate into emptiness?

What will Carles do if his cell phone number, date of birth, last name and so forth shows up here? Why would he fear that so much? We are good people on this blog. Does Carles know himself? Does Carles love himself? Does Carles know love?

uhhhhh wow carles so musically illiterate broham whattabout remixes of rave classics aka “nu rave” “electro house” aka trance version 2.0 america’s “electroclash” – peaches, fischerspooner, felix da housecat, ladytron etc aka lamest electronic music for hipsters only or LEMFHO- “french house” aka “french dudes with weird gimmicks” justice daft punk mr. oizo etc. “pissed off punk rockers” remember how many rock against bush albums there were and bands like anti-flag….your notable electronic producers are missing paul van dyk and armin van burren who are arguably the most popular in the world, routinely filling stadiums with 30,000, selling out in every city they play. you say its eurotrash but its some global shit and ur an ignant stooge. one microtrend you missed was the merge of brazillian samba with drum and bass music, which led to some pretty incredible variations of liquid funk 2006-2007……………….

trance sucks first of all because it all sounds the same and is SOOO predicable. and the reason so many people like it is because most people have poor taste when it comes to music…oh am i being pretentious…whoops…forgivez me y’alllllllllll
