Every year for the rest of my life, I enter the new year, and think of the lyrics by the indie genius Ben Gibbard. In the song ‘The New Year’, Ben sings about how pumped ppl are to enter the new year….but ultimately, Ben bro is so transcendent/alone/’jaded’; he doesn’t feel n e different from b4, but is still kinda hopeful 4 new beginnings.
It’s kinda weird how 2k10 is here. I’m not sure if I’m ready. So much of my self-concept/blog content was built upon 2k9 being one of the most authentic/alternative/meme-filled years in the history of time. But now 2k9 is over, and all we can do is try to discredit it as we move forward into a new state of authenticity.
It’s a new year.
Will buzzworthy bands from last year/decade still ‘carry weight’/'move units’ in the new decade?
Even though I am a year older, am I still in touch with my inner-child/bro/high schooler?
Will I ‘grow up’ and enter a serious relaish this year, now that there are no more ‘electro skanks’ to take home that haven’t had ~10 local scene penises inside of them?
Should I make some resolutions? Should I get physically fit/ ‘eat healthy’/ share the same resolutions as middle aged women?
Will ‘indie music’ even be relevant in the new decade?
Can’t believe my bros and I will be (X + 10) at the end of the decade….
So this is the new year…

i kinda feel like alt, in its current incarnation at least, died in the last months of 2k9. trends are being adopted so quickly that it’s becoming impossible or futile to be a ‘step ahead’. either we’ll see the line between alt and mnstrmrs become invisible, or alts will become some sort of super-elite adopters of impossibly fleeting trends.
i went to a house party and played my own playlist, and even though the rest of the partygoers were mnstrmrs, i had my own lil alt funeral which culminated with some godly luck of My Girls being played at midnight. someone even danced ‘fukken hyphy’ to a HEALTH song. was pretty (bitter)sweet.

My Alternative Resolutions/Goals
1. Find an incredibly keut/hot alt chick/skank to date.
2. Start a lo-fi band.
3. Get a job @ AmAppy to supplement my income (via #2 and my journalism/writing career not paying the bills).
4. Buy 2-3 vintage cars (fixies are so 2k9.5).
5. If the lo-fi band goal fails, join an authentic band (i.e. AnCo or helping revive the Bon Ivers).

Before reading this post I was thinking about how nothing feels different, but it’s strange that I can intellectually reason that a lot that is different in my life. Everything is completely different & everything is exactly the same. There have been many superficial changes over the past decade eg. hair where there was not hair before. As well as deeper changes – I think for many 20 somethings a lot of the rampant angst and depression of their teens changes into cynicism & dissatisfaction and at the other end even optimism (I think I’m a generally cheerful bro). Even though these changes make sense why doesn’t it feel like anything is different? Is it because I’m still fundamentally the same person? Is it because time is just a bunch of shit? Is it all indifferent via Kant?
