Does n e 1 know what G20 protesters are even protesting? Seems like they just want to make .jpg internet memes

Photos via Torontoist

Every year or so, some summit happens called the . I don’t even know what really happens there, who goes, or what global leaders are trying to solve/talk about. Mainly just exists as some sort of opportunity for a city to ‘waste tons of money on security’ and for tons of rebellious spirits who h8 society to ‘protest’ against society/the government/the world/the Illuminati / miscellaneous constraints of the human spirit via ‘bullshit’.

It seems like a ‘protest’ doesn’t even really mean anything any more. Like many ‘real life’ events, it has sort of degenerated into the kind of event that is mainly created to ‘create sweet web media’, whether it is a youtube vid, a .jpg, or even a dramatic gif.

Feel like these protesters in are just ‘internet meme generating ass holes’ who don’t ‘give a damn’ about the world, and only really care about making people on the internet LOL. Honestly feel like in our meme society, the lolcat might be the only universal currency.

I guess the riot cops provide a great ‘backdrop’ to create a surrealist meme. Feel like it is ‘human nature’ to want to see people getting beat up by cops [via the Rodney King theory], then reflect on the power of the government.

Bros who ‘didnt graduate from high school’ can unite with ‘unemployed bros who graduated with a worthless degree from an expensive university’ under the same goal: “H8 society for misleading me/leaving me trapped.’

Just wish I could protest ‘with song’. Brought my guitar to the protest hoping to throw down some Jack Johnson-esque vibes, but the cops totally killed our chill waves.

Is it authentic to wear a Bob Marley ‘One Love’ t-shirt to a protest?

Might start a meme blog called lesbians who look like little boys getting their asses beat by riot police . tumblr . com

Maybe I’ll just take my flip cam and ‘vlog’ live from the middle of the violent areas, putting a buzzband soundtrack to make my video seem ‘more bad ass/bloggable.’

Worried abt Foot Locker. Thought it was our right as members of the Western World to own the ‘sweetest pair of sneakers’ possible [via the Post Michael Jordan world]

Glad the GAP stayed safe. Might go get some on sale t-shirts and socks later

Sad that Am Appy didn’t play it safe, and ended up with human feces in their store. [link]

Do u think she h8s cell phone stores because of how much they charge for data plans? Maybe she wouldn’t be so violent if she knew that Droid Does Apps.

Wonder if there is a Home Depot / Lowe’s nearby where u can pick up plywood / weapons / hammers / etc.

Maybe an Outdoor shop is a better place to get a pick axe

‘Totes gonna make this my facebook profile default pic.’

This bro seems to be getting ‘mad air’, Shaun White style. Wonder if he got those boxers at The Gap / Old Navy.

Wonder if they are really ‘anarchists’ or just people who want to ‘fuck shit up.’ Really hope 1 of these things comes to my city soon. Want to go to my local mall and ‘break some windows.

Do yall believe in or capitalism?
are these real anarchists, or just bros who eat McDonalds like every1 else?

Keut cutoff + bandana combo

I wonder which 1 has a longer-lasting psychological impact on u: getting arrested [via handcuffs] OR getting arrested [via plastic cord binding ur hands together]. (you probably aren’t a legitimate threat 2 society if u can be restrained by a plastic cord.)

Local Business Owners should probably h8 society.

‘I proposed 2 my wife at the protest. Our pic symbolizes love in the face of a mad world.’

////CONTINUE READING///

Must be fun to be a riot cop, because you have the opportunity to ‘beat the shit out of any type of person u h8.’ This bro seems to h8 women.

This cop bro seems to h8 younger bros who have their whole lives ahead of them.

Really want to ‘get aggressive’ and smash some skulls

Wish these protester bros cared more about the Earth / recycling.

Wonder if she is being arrested for a ‘fashion crime’ [via leggings / camel toe]

Real blood, or Halloween prop from ur local grocery store?

Worried that these beautiful breasts would get blood on them / beaten by angry riot coppers.

Do u think people are really ‘protesting’ or do they just want the chance to ‘fuck shit up’?

Feel like the protests are just going to become places where failed artists ‘try too hard’ to make photo memes. Wonder if they are graduate art students who have ‘one last chance’ to get press for their art project.

Is the protest a place where global leaders hear the voices of the commonman, or is it just a place where people take pictures of people destroying public/private property?

Does n e 1 know what the protests are about?
Is there really anything ‘that wrong’ with the world?
Do the summits fix our global problems?
Do cities ‘waste more money’ hosting the Olympics or hosting summits?
Do yall ‘believe in anything’ or do u jut want to chill on the internet?
Do these protesters ‘know what the eff they are doing’?
Is a solid place to raise ur family?
Are yall more chill with or capitalism? Do u know if Steve Jobs would still make Macbooks in an anarchist society?
Are all of these protesters authentic, or just trying to make internet memes?
Are IRL events no longer pure because they are ‘trying too hard to produce sharable internet content’?
Whose side are yalls on?

well crls, last year’s g20 post was better but you couldn’t have topped the ‘gotta take some kewl pix for my flickr account. might live tweet about how ‘bad ass’ this ’shit’ is.’ that was so incredibly SPOT ON.

anyway. police should have a license to kill on those annoying riot bro’s/baguettes. world is better off without them, those people only cost money and don’t generate anything to be able to solve some problems…always complaining how crap everything is while the best think they do is ‘being a vegan’…

At least the g20 people try to solve some problems…. burning down a police car doesn’t solve anything… it only makes taxes go up…

Yes, paying attention to people who dress like corporate execs has done us so much good as they’ve started all these wars and run our economies into a ditch.

And its always very important to judge a person by their clothes. You certainly don’t want to care about what they say. Just laugh at their clothes. That’s what’s really important in this world.

    @Samson,

Lets see, what have the corporate suits done for us ….

They’ve crashed the economy into the worst downturn since the Great Depression with their speculation and fraud and greed.

They cost millions of people their jobs. Then they turn around and deny any aid to the unemployed with their Herbert Hoover economics.

They attack unions and any attempt for workers to try to organize for a better life

When they aren’t taking our jobs by crashing the economy, they were sending them overseas to China. In return they ship back poisonous toys such that when we try to get our starving children to stop crying by giving them a toy, we are realy poisoning our own children.

Someone eating salad and smoking weed is doing no harm to me at all. While these capitalists in their thousand dollar suits are destroying our lives.

So, naturally everyone laughs at the hippy kids instead. Yeah, that makes sense.

@Samson, No that’s not what I meant. I meant that if th hippies want to get listened to seriously, the corporate/executive types in charge are goin to pay more attention to some clean cut guy in a suit (even if he has the same ideas as a hippy) than some guy with dreadlocks and a t shirt with a reefer on it.

It’s just presentation. Hippies have a name for looking at things in an overly simplistic, or even misinformed, way. The stereotypical vuitton-wearing, conservative capitalist will look much more kindly on someone who looks even vaguely like them than a hippy.

1.) During past G20s, those who started violence were actually members of the police force
2.) The G20 summit is a very serious and devious meeting of economic powers and has already lead to increased discrimination in developing countries, an increasing gap between the rich and the poor and environmental disaster.
3.) What these protesters are protesting isn’t bullshit.

@LCF, most of the bad peeps weren’t Canadian. The vast majority of the protestors were peaceful. That being said, what is the point of all this if their message does not get across. I’m sorry, protesting “secret” meetings is not a good enough reason to trash our usually non-violent city.

    Hello Carles!

I just heard about your blog in Time Magazine, and boy am I ever impressed! I’m glad to see someone who is as mad at these violent rioters as I. My mother’s side of the family lives in the GTA, to which I make frequent visits, and it is just heartbreaking to see so much disrespect being displayed for common decency in that beautiful area.

I also notice that you’re a fan of The XX. I thought I was the only one! Not a lot of people around here listen to NPR and get exposed to indie music… but I guess that’s what I get for living in Hicksville! Lol! And by the way I totally agree that Shakira absolutely BUTCHERED Islands.

Just want to say that you have found a fan in me. Consider yourself bookmarked!

    Cheers,

    Karly

Well, very little research was required to find out what these protests were about. Although, first it would help if someone learned a little about what the G-20 is. That’s an economic summit of the 20 biggest economies. The leaders get together and plan a unified economic strategy.

In general, the G-20 are all implementing Herbert Hoover’s solution to the economic downturn. They all want to cut budgets, and of course the parts that are cut are the parts that help people. They couldn’t dream about spending less on the military or on all these riot police.

Anyways, that’s the general message of the protests. That we don’t want the equivalent of ‘structural adjustment programs’ applied to our nations. That we we want to spend money on helping people and on stimulating our own economies and on creating jobs for our citizens. That now is not the time to use fake concerns about ‘deficits’ as an excuse to let our own people starve and be out of work.

Of course, the corporations that are getting rich, and the ones who own all the media, don’t want anyone to hear a message like that. So, they focus on ‘riot-porn’ and on strange looking kids and they’ll show the interviews of anyone with nose rings who can’t talk coherently about why they are protesting.

Meanwhile, there are many groups around these protests that have very coherent spokespeople who could explain this well. But you’ll never hear them unless you go look for them. It took me about ten minutes to find them and to learn the above description of why there were protests. I did have to go past the first page of google results, but its there for anyone who looks.

Or, everyone can just look at the pictures of the protest and make fun of the people being arrested and pretend that there’s no reason for this at all.

I agree with everything but the question of whether Toronto is a “solid place to raise children”. Having lived in Toronto for a number of years, including attending high school in Toronto, I can tell you that it is normally a great city to live in. Most (or more likely all) of these “Black Bloc” protesters come from anywhere but Toronto, and the reason they’re so willing to destroy shit is because it doesn’t affect them in any way. It’s not their property, so why should they care?

Toronto is one of the best cities I’ve ever been to, and it stays that way in my eyes despite what happened over the g20 weekend. Toronto is incredibly safe compared to any number of cities, including Washington, DC, well known for being one of the crime capitals of the US. The experience of living in Toronto is amazing, being exposed to any number of cultures, food, languages, and people, as well as having every opportunity that living in the city provides. Toronto has a great art scene, great music scene, is well respected in fashion etc.

There’s no question in my mind that Toronto is indeed a “solid place to raise your children”, it just sucks when stupid people come to town to wreck your shit, and you’re left picking up the pieces.
