Go back in time to 2k9... It was one of the richest buzz years in the history of the buzzosphere. Perhaps the height of indie, back when buzz was at its purest. Back when the xx were just some UK buzzband with young looking awkward ass kids. Every one was eager to buzz them based on the strength and buzziness of their music, and the uniform aesthetic that their music achieved.
But now it's 2k12, and the xx are following up their debut album with 'Coexist.' It is honestly pretty boring, and I don't think they were even going for a 'beautiful minimal' thing. Based on the buzz of their first album and HUGE album sales, particularly worldwide, we're about to see the xx get processed thru the indie meatchurner like few bands before them. (which also has to do with the lame way that big indie bands are predictably 'covered' now. They'll be on the cover of magazines, participate in dumb video interviews, and have magazine 'features' written about them as if there is anything interesting to write about this boring album.

Few people/journalists will dare to ask why the album is so boring.
Most likely, the xx have just allowed 'the xx aesthetic' to define and constrain their creative process. After 3 years of having every1 tell you that you are amazing, you believe that you can poo golden buzz nuggets. Every1 at their label was probably afraid to tell them to 'go back and write a song that people want to listen to', except now we are stuck with a group of songs that don't even play to their core strengths: 1) Jamie xx's SICK beats 2) boy-girl duets that make every1 think about relationships and 3) vibey and approachable songs like 'Intro' from the first album.
Every1 is so eager to pander to a buzzband with high indie cred that it doesn't even matter. We've seen crappy performances from many of our favorite artists, so why does it even matter? Who even wants 2 understand WHY an album went wrong? Who even wants to ask the hardhitting questions?

Maybe THE XX went wrong because Baria Qureshi is no longer in the group. You might remember her as the bass player of the xx in their formative days. I have no way to confirm who was responsible for what elements of the songwriting process of their first album, but perhaps Baria Qureshi was the ultimate guide and curator of their sound. Some one who wasn't afraid to say when things were limp, sounding like boring soft rock. Some1 who wasn't afraid to challenge the vibes of the band, whose members have clearly headed in different directions since 2k9. Jamie xx is already 'rolling around in that Drake $$$$'.
Oh Baria Qureshi.... Who knows what she'd be like now, since every member has 'lost weight' and refined their indie alt celeb look.
We still may never know why she was kicked out of the band. In 2011, she called band member Oliver Sim 'an effing liar.' The xx went on to win multiple awards and ride buzzwaves to perhaps the greatest heights of any 2nd generation buzzband.
But where was Baria? She is one of indie's greatest unsolved mysteries.
The new song 'Chained' sounds like a silly parody of the xx.
The xx used to be cool ass awkward kids. Now it feels like they truly believe that their shit doesn't stink. Makeovers. International success. This is not the xx that we fell in love with. This is not the xx that we chose to buzz.
Who knows if our sweet Baria is 'the missing piece' that could have saved the XX's sophomore album from being effing terrible. There's really nothing I h8 more than having to consume hollow buzz. We know that the new album is boring/basically 'sux', but major publications are afraid to say so because the xx are a household buzzband name. I know 1 person who is not afraid to say that they album sucks is our girl Baria.
I know ur out there, Baria. I know ur out there somewhere. Tonight, all authentic fans of indie stand in solidarity with you.
