MGMT sold just over 18000 copies of their new album Congratulations in week 2, down 74% from their week 1 total of 66,000 albums. They 'free fall'-ed to #18 on the Billboard charts, losing to many mainstream acts like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, The Black Eyed Peas, and the Soundtracks to Glee and Iron Man 2. Does n e 1 who is a music industry insider know if this type of free fall is natural for indie bands, or is this 'a huge disgrace'?
Wonder if 'heads are gonna roll.' Maybe MGMT will be dropped from their label, and they will rebrand themselves as 'authentic independent artists making music 4 the right reasons.'
Is a huge decrease in album sales to be expected for indie bands?
Are you pardoned from a free fall in sales if your album charts at #1?
Is MGMT 'the biggest flop' of 2k10 since they got a lukewarm Pitchfork score, didn't go mainstream, and were chauffeured through a series of hollow profile pieces about 'the challenges of a sophomore album', etc?
Did MGMT 'blow their opportunity' to become the next Coldplay / the Killers?
What are your predictions for MGMT album 3?
How many albums is the Arcade Fire / LCD Soundsystem / Crystal Castles going 2 sell?

FURST
Last.
@Gnome Chompsky, YEAH!
it has no electric feel or time to pretend or kids
Exactly, No poppy bullshit is what they were going for.
but everyone I know downloaded the leak, doesn't that count? Is there a chart for most mp3s leaked?
@\\\\\, Great Idea. Alt Report Bot should start making that chart.
Judging by what the album sounds like, they wanted to fail.
@B, xactly
mgmtbros want to take down the music industry and that's good
i don't have to listen to the album and that's also good
poor album sales validates mindiestream authenticity
@alter ebro, good observation
they'll pay back the label through concert sales. just got an email they are playing 'merriweather post pavilion' in maryland [the venue the album is named after]. i think that holds 15,000 people. wonder if they're gonna headline MSG?
@d, do they have 3sixty deal?
@A, who knows but if they owe the label money from the recording and can't recoup it through album sales i'm assuming they'll pay them back through gross from concerts. that being said they've already sold like 85,000 records in the US and probably lots around the world.
@d, wonder how many records are in their deal... maybe they'll recoup on the third. maybe they made enough of the first to cover any losses on this, if there are any. probably don't have to recoup album by album. if 360, then it doesn't matter and label gets $$$ from tour anyway.
one of those rare occasions where I dont have to listen to the album to know how much I h8 it
feel like the 'scratch n' snif' cover story r8sd expectations to 'such great heights' [via posty iron+wine servo]
'come down now' mgmts
That means they're becoming more relevant!
can't wait 2 name drop them at a party this summer.
Ppl will b totally confused!
the album leaked and is all over the internet; their fan base is all over free internet downloads - whereas many justin bieber fans would definitely BUY the album
@evan, great analysis bro, u should get a publisher
h8 mgmt. going to 'relevant design skewl' next year, and s0 many ppl like them (via 'fave music' on fb). makes me feel superior (via liking 'next level shit').
Oh how I love thee, MGMT posts. You bring everyone together.
P.S. I bought the album, yes I did, and I like it. ALOT.
the mgmts new album is like chillwave without the chill. srsly dont 'get' it.
mks me think ther more authentic
MGMT ARR TAH BETLEZ OV ALTURDTIV TEHY ARR AUTENIC
"We can't sell shit. Take that mainstream!" - Mgmt. At least they can hock their authenticity at Hawt Topic globally.
Great album - better than the first imo. A much deeper and organic sound, reminiscent of Mutations-era Beck. Psychedelia FTW!
Fuck Pitchfork.
@saucer, its weird what ppl think is 'psychedelic'
real talk
new album is pretty good yall
(via listening to it)
ughhhh
This album wasn't very good to begin with, but I'm sure MGMT will be all right. Their last album is enough to carry them through a few shitty albums.
Does n e 1 know if the number of 'Kids' downloads exceed the number of 'Congratulations' downloads last week?
Has n e 1 'snorted' the shavings from the 'scratch 'n' sniff' cover yet?
Didn't like them when they were alt with smeared on neon face paint, but feel bad for them now. Being mindie-maltstream isn't easy.
Pretending to like the new MGMT album is the new pretending not to like the old MGMT album.
LAST
lol
great album. people who say it sucks, or hate it - never actually say why it sucks. I think they haven't really listened to it. oh well, at least it's not another AnCo post.
@youth councilor, i ghost wrote the entire album, bro
first
everyone that says this album sux is retarded. thats just a shallow opinion. this is a great album, the songs are creative and deep. MGMT doesnt give a shit what people want to hear cuz they make music to make music, not to make fans. you want another kids or electric feel? then look somewhere else.
@jamin, lol, bro
It makes me feel sort of guilty for rocking the leak. I'll buy it legit just for support yall
Here is how it went
Average Single Loving Retard(all of America):"OH Mgmt, those guys who dropped that poppy "indie" album a few years ago!" I'm gonna pick thus up.
*takes album in car listens*
"Oh I don't like this... maybe the next song with sound like kids!"
[Listens some more, takes home, uploads on iTunes, listens some more]
"Oh,okay, no Kids or Electric Feel type songs.."
*Tells friends album is bad, album is deemed bad because no pop singles are on it for the average tard to shake their ass too*
*Album is thrown in oblivion of countless room junk*
This happens in a collective, album falls off, who gives a shit. Later on, in the year 2020, Pitchfork does a Pinkerton move, re-rates the album praises it's "genius" that they just didn't get the first time,gives it a 10.0 demand goes up for the album, because future robot hipsters want it. MGMT release the Congratulations Delux Edition, 10 year anniversary type shit, everyone loves it. MGMT becomes a classic band, 2020 hipsters emulate their sound.
As always, asshole with get on the internet(the Super Internet by then, 1000x faster) and talk about how the album was always and still shit. We'll get on the internet, after our art careers have failed, we have 2 kids and a cubicle job working for that nerd we be up in school or would never fuck, we'll be on Carles's son(a half blipster, half hipster) blog talking about what went down in our day.
Get ready for the future, bitches.
@The zz, I think thats pretty realistic.
I bought it. I thought it was supposed to have some crazy satanic book. It just had a normal book. WTF
still prolly no. 1 in the 'hot girls banged per week' chart
This is the most ridiculous post i've read in quite some time. Thanks for the laugh
i saw a vh1 countdown of the top smashing pumpkins songs today. i think mgmt made number "oh fuck, people don't actually buy music anymore"
On their website when they were streaming the entire album said this "We wanted to give this album to you for free, but that didn't make sense to anyone but us."
it's like they're so fucking misunderstood yeah, even hipsters are fucking racking their brains trying to work it all out. and then when they're bordering 48 years old, some weird robotic psychedelic neon band is gonna ask them to produce their album, and everyone from the future will be wishing they were one of those kids who got to experience dancing to Congratulations in the 2000 and tens whilst they were tripping out on acid in a college dorm. fuck it, who cares if they don't sell, they're making weirdos like me happy.
@natasha, probably the funniest response right there... MGMT have made the album they wanted to make, shame it's not what a lot of the fans wanted, I'm pretty sure the label will be pissed. This album will be cited as an excuse for labels to continue bringing out play it safe, generic albums for years to come...at least they had the balls to do what they wanted in the first place.
MGMT did the best thing they could have ever done with this album by going left field. Brilliant. This performance speaks for itself http://www.hulu.com/watch/144718/saturday-night-live-mgmt-flash-delirium
Forget sale or hype, Just a disappointing album. Expected more but got your typical soph. album from an artist trying to show their more than a poppy indie sing-along dance band.
Stick to what you know, leave visionairy music making to someone else.
Got a cool limited print, at least I didn't loose all my money when I pre-ordered my album.
@Disappointed,
If everyone left visionary music making to someone else, who would make it?
I really enjoy listening to Congratulations and I'm glad to be a happy paying customer.
