Broken Social Scene released their latest album Forgiveness Rock Record. I haven't listened to it in its entirety, sort of just 'skimmed songs' via some random widget. Not sure if this album is supposed to be good. I think I read somewhere that the 'essential members' of this band no longer play with them, and this is sort of just the leftover bros trying to capitalize off their brand. Sorta like the modern day Beach Boys.

Based on the review, they say this is a 'concept album':

Now they're back, and they're forgiving. Who, exactly? Each other, loves, bad decisions, humanity at large, worse decisions, the past, the future, culture, corporations, art, you, me, maybe even George W. Bush. (Well, maybe not him.)

Apparently there are also 'chart friendly' / 'radio friendly' songs on this album, but I don't think they will crossover or n e thing:

The band's newfound tightness results in a few of the most chart-friendly songs in BSS history, although as usual, each seems to come with a built-in caveat to prevent the potential of radio play: the sweat-soaked "World Sick", with its massive crescendos building to one visceral, heart-pounding release after another, is nearly seven minutes long with extended instrumental intros and outros.

If a band hasn't 'crossed-over' in 2 albums, do they just have to 'pull an anco' and write post-radio friendly conceptual songs?

Do you think this album was overrated?
Is this album 'relevant'?
Is it time for Broken Social Scene to 'shut it down' or do they have a core fan base of cool dads + alts hanging on to the past + Canadians who will buy their albums?
What is the lifespan of a buzzband? Is there a point at which 90% of bands need to sort of just 'disappear'?
What score did this album rlly deserve?

fuck yes it's overrated! it's fucking sub-Modest Mouse aimless wankery. and they gave the new MGMT a 6.8?!? One MGMT song is more creative, more satisfying, and has more hooks than 5 BSS songs put together. it's just further proof that P4k goes by indie cred and what's cool, not by the music. i don't care if you love BSS, these guys write mood music with quasi-hooks. they can't write a fucking song to save their lives!

@should prolly smoke some weed and chizill but yknow..., lol. your dum. u r implying that mgmt is "not cool" so p4k won't give them an 8.3 like bss. i would argue that mos peeps think mgmt is pretty kewl. remember that time they were on snl, GQ, rolling stone, etc etc etc. may b theyre album didnt have as many "satisfying hooks" as u think and they deserved a 6.8. and rofl rofl rofl, bss compared to modest mouse? are u thirteen years old? ur a dumba$$. thats 4 sure. bss are not the best, but they are def creative and they have some pretty damn good songs. they deserve the 8.3

should prolly smoke some weed and chizill but yknow...'s picture

@rofl hahaha,
let's put it this way, if you and your friends stopped growing out rattails and spacedocking each other long enough to rehearse, you could do what BSS does. you could not do what MGMT does. you're simply not talented enough. they are some of the most talented songwriters of their generation, and you, and BSS, aren't. whether it's dumb, cool, whatever. and the modest mouse comparison isn't off-base at all, it was intended as a slam. i know all the bands you know, and i'm not 13. unlike you, i don't "progress" towards anti-rock oblivion as i get older. i've had good taste for awhile now and it's not going anywhere. paul mccartney agrees with me, bitch. there's a laugh. oh, but you're too good for paul mccartney. you've progressed past the beatles. the kinks and the beach boys are better even though they themselves looked to the beatles. so many smart little boys in this world.

andrew's picture

@should prolly smoke some weed and chizill but yknow...,

This guy is sincerely on some heavy drugs. There's not a person reading this who could out-do anything Broken Social Scene has done / will do. They've been putting out amazing albums for 10 years while your beloved MGMT just put out a sophomore flop and you tout them "some of the most talented songwriters of their generation." That's laughable. That's as uninformed as saying Sydney Crosby is better than Wayne Gretzky. Until he proves that with a career of stats, it's an asinine comment (like yours). You don't get get seminal indie rock giants like Pavement and Dinosaur Jr on your side (like BSS have) from being a bunch of wankers. If you were to poll a group of credible indie rock bands (which without getting too granular, both bands would be classified under), you would have more raising their hands for BSS than for MGMT. MGMT have reached the pop culture mainstream while Broken Social Scene have painfully and deliberately avoided it. That's the major difference.

Also- to the author, for god sakes do some research before you write and you'll look at least 3x less of an asshat than you do right now. Every single one of the key/founding/essential members of BSS were in full force on Forgiveness Rock Record. Drew/Canning/Spearin/Whiteman/Peroff are the true core members of the band, everyone else (while still considered a member of the BSS family) are invited guests. The "Broken Social Scene Presents..." line of albums were produced with a leaner band, while still actually working with the core members. Those allowed the members to continue working as the band while setting up the listener's expectations that they won't be seeing as many of the usual guests.

rofl hahaha's picture

@should prolly smoke some weed and chizill but yknow..., how wonderfully pretentious of you. BSS are talented, as song writers and as artists. I suggested your chastising of p4k was of base (it was) and that BSS deserved their rating. Albeit, not a fan of m mouse either, its not an accurate tag. paul m wrote some great songs, but only while with john lennon. i love the beatles. still do. (bitch.) mgmt is ok. not song writers of a generation. i simply suggested they are a 6.8 band. i stand by that. as for you, i'm pumped you know all the bands i do! super! so, while BSS are writing songs in unique time signatures (7/4 shoreline), epic rock ballads themselves (world sick, stars and sons, superconnected) and getting best new music awards, maybe you should give those smart little boys some space. people frown on that kind of thing.

bssfan's picture

@should prolly smoke some weed and chizill but yknow..., you actually should smoke and listen to this album, its fucking EPIC. Instrumental/post rock-y music is probz too cool for you, enjoy your shitty MGMT album. :)

@bssfan,
the album openers, for comparison:

Can you honestly tell me you'd rather listen to "World Sick"?

Here's a play-by-play of "World Sick":
Slow fade in, drums a-drummin'; wonky white-guy guitar line; ooh, now we're jammin'...... some bro singing about "crippled affection," with little wingnut guitar flourishes at the end of the sung phrase by the guitars; distortion guitar wave; oh shit, passion yall; back to boring verse, wingnut flourishes; distortion wave again, drums a-splashin' sloppily..... "passionate" drum/guitar "breakdown"; song takes a shit for a minute or so, drums a-drummin', oh we ain't stopping yall; singer dude does the same verse shit again; what am i holding onto as a listener? his lyrics? the same lame verse into distortion wave shit over and over again? this is good music? this is boring and lame, people, simply put. this song is proggier than MGMT's whole album; whenever they get bored of their shitty verse/chorus they just chill and make ambient noise for awhile and hope "something" builds toward "something"...................am i awake? is this thing on?......what the fuck?....that's the end? that song was a big ball of nothing! are you serious? please someone explain to me how there was anything to that song? it really, honestly, no bullshit, has the same complexity and appeal as a shitty modest mouse song. here's one for comparison. wonky guitar lines, boring verses, dumb choruses, nothing song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK1bi4emEkk
Both the BSS and the Modest songs are the epitome of what frustrates the fuck out of me with indie music sometimes. It's just so fucking boring and lazy and not good by any metric I can come up with. There's just nothing to it. They didn't bother to make a song, to make nice rhythms or melodies or choruses or verses or bridges or anything. They just wonked around on their instruments and hoped it was a song, and you tell them it's awesome.

Then here's "Siberian Breaks," which..... can you honestly front on this song?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRbONAbVpS8
That song alone crushes the competition. It's a completely original classic. There's nothing proggy about it. It's just an epic, wonderful song, with one beautiful section after another.

comprehensive takedown of "world sick"'s picture

@andrew, pavement and dinosaur jr. suck, way more than BSS. you will say that is pretentious, but i don't base that judgment on knocking their status in the indie community just to knock it, i knock them solely because i don't like their music at all, and i'm dead serious.

david bowie's picture

@comprehensive takedown of "world sick",
you don't like them, so they suck.

@bro noir, false to the ∞th. Smile could have changed almost everything about the trajectory of pop music had it come out in the year it was written. It is brilliant, relevant, and represents a historical milestone in modern pop music.

carles i was seriously just gonna rant on here about how you're alienating your core fanbase by not 'getting into' crystal castles as much as you used to. i found this blog back in 2k7-2k8 when your alice glass boner was poppin daily. i was gonna say that it makes me sad how we can't 'connect' over music like we used to, how you've been kinda 'disconnected' lately or something. you seem colder and more mechanical - an 'altomaton'.

robotic. love. (via cc's chart-topping ballad xxxcuzxxzuzxcvzx me).

but after reading this, i think i get what you're doing. it seems like your new purpose as a blogger is to 'shit on' everything we hold dear, whether it's serious or not. i don't particularly care for BSS, so this post means nothing to me, but i know plenty of maltstreamers who are losing their shit right now as i type this. BSS is sacred ground for some people (read: lame people). you just don't go there.

but you fucking went there carles. you've moved on to the next level. you've transcended all of us, ascending into some new plane of uber-altdom. fuck bands. fuck bloggable mp3s. fuck pitchfork. fuck remixes. fuck festivals. fuck ariel pink. fuck laptops. fuck gorillavsbear. fuck memes. fuck witch house. fuck youtube video premieres. fuck reverb. fuck comments, and fuck replies. fuck chillwave. fuck m.i.a. fuck leaked albums. fuck synths. fuck she & him. fuck retro. fuck drugs. fuck james murphy. fuck lo-fi. fuck american apparel. fuck MGMT. fuck party pics. fuck ableton. fuck alt celebrities. fuck hypemachine. fuck dubstep. fuck neon indian. fuck torrents. fuck twitter. fuck anco. fuck alt.

bronze's picture

@merpderp, backlash is inevitable , just like grunge was hated on by '96. every 'movement' starts off innocent and pure and then it gets milked, till it turns into pus-y contrived bullspit. BSS new album is a casualty of that. add to fact technologie like the internet speeds up fads/genre/taste its irrelevant within a yr of inception. indie hate will be 'out' 7 months from now.

Jonathon Moxon's picture

Of course the album is overrated! Broken Social Scene haven't been culturally relevant since 2004.

andrew's picture

@Jonathon Moxon,

That's a silly comment. Broken Social Scene have never been "culturally relevant," even with YFIIP which was acclaimed to a higher degree than the S/T album. Unless you're talking specifically about Toronto culture, where BSS did have the opportunity to impact. Non-mainstream music acts unfortunately do not carry cultural weight unless you're talking about the small-by-comparison insular music scenes that they're within, or the relatively minimal location-based influence that can be felt.

Name one culturally relevant rock band (even just North America wide) that's sub-mainstream.

The best part about Broken Social Scene is that they'll be making music together well after people have stopped opening their wallets to buy the records. They're not striving for cultural relevancy, as that's a fleeting ambition.

yeah.. I think it's overrated. Skimming was all I could do. Was too bored by it to listen to any more. Who knows, maybe someday it'll grow on me. But I doubt it.

dbag's picture

haven't heard the new one... but it almost doesn't matter, they put out some pretty rad records that will keep them relevant for a long time. You don't have to throw a record away just because it's old... it can still play, and these do. If you didn't like those albums, it's more or less your loss.

dbag's picture

and their best album came out in 2005. so the 2004 comment... uh, yeah.
