Avey Tare's new album Down There got a decent amount of buzz, but I think it was mainly because he released an album before Panda Bear. The album cycle sorta 'came out of nowhere', so I think ppl never really vibed to it. Usually every1 gets 'jacked' for a new AnCo member release, like it is supposed to 'replace' AnCo MP3s, but I think Panda Bear has all of the expectations on his shoulders.
Anyways, it seems like Pitchfork 'panned' the fuck out of Avey Tare, giving him a 7.9, which is like a 1.0 in Animal Collective standards. Just compared it to AnCo and said it was kinda 'meh...in a positive way'
Down There is less accessible than latter-day Animal Collective and harder to wrap your head around, but it isn't a callback to the more difficult sound that marked the band early on. If anything, it sounds like Portner is taking a lateral step away from Animal Collective in order to work out some pressing personal issues on his own.
7.9 seems like a massive failure if every1 in 2k10 is getting a 8.4 at least. Guess this means that P4k is sorta 'going cold' on Animal Collective as a relevant band. Wonder if MPP was the 'peak' of the AnCo era.
Here is a sentence where they compare Avey to Panda, but don't rlly tell us who is 'better.'
Down There opener "Laughing Hieroglyphic" finds Portner touching on notions of protection and kinship, ideas common to the work of his bandmate Panda Bear's solo work
Also learned that Avey Tare isn't going on a world tour. Kinda pissed. He needs 2 'support' his album instead of just making mp3s for 'art's sake.'
Portner has said that he has no plans to perform this material live, hinting that the feeling of the music isn't something that he wants to revisit every night on tour. And it's true that Down There embodies a mindset that most people are trying to get away from.
The review just kept talking abt how 'sad' this album was, and how it was created 2 reflect on dark/sad emotions. Sorta bummed out, but I guess u can't really have a 'great album' in the modern world that is 'all sad.' Sure it can be good/tasteful, but in today's fast moving indie memesphere, ppl want to 'be happy, lol, and feel cool' instead of listening to sad ass mp3s.
Did P4k 'pan' Avey Tare?
Was this a fair score?
Do u wish Avey just wrote 10 'Brother Sport' type songs?
Should Avey write a sad EP about how he got below an 8.0 in the 'easiest' p4k scoring era of all time?
Do u wish u could 'pull an Avey Tare' [via divorcing ur wife] and write a dark album?
r u still pissed at Panda Bear 4 not releasing an album in 2k10?
