Ariel Pink is a highly revered lofi indie legend within authentic internet music circles... However... You'll NEVER guess what happened at his Coachella set. According to various reports, a frustrated Ariel Pink stormed off stage due to sound problems. He left many of his fans 'confused', unsure as to what was happening....

Do u think Ariel's on-stage antics 'crossed the line'? Was he 'being a diva'? Or do u blame 'the sound guy' for 'being a complete dick'?

Ariel Pink, his microphone apparently haunted by a lack of volume, stalked around the stage inside the Gobi tent Friday afternoon without a clear sense of purpose. He spent most of the set smoking cigarettes with his back to the audience, a la early Jim Morrison, only without the sinewy sexual charisma.

Wearing a see-through lace shirt, red sunglasses and a studded black belt, his shoulder-length blond hair tangled, Pink frustrated the crowd, and willingly so, it seemed. He's known for that, though.

Ariel sounds like he looked super hott <3 <3 <3 #TeamAriel. Is Ariel Pink the hottest diva in indie rock?

Were u at Coachelly? Did Ariel Pink let u down, or do u mainly go 2 his shows to 'witness a trainwreck' that mainstreamers don't 'get'?

At one point Pink left the stage, "I'm sorry -- I know you hate me now," he said before disappearing 15 minutes into the show.

"That's it? Are you serious?" said one fan as a confused grumble rose from the crowd. His band stood there for a while and then finally left to retrieve him. It didn't take long, and this time when he came out he appeared to make a bit more effort to interact with the audience, although his energy felt jittery and unbalanced.

It seems like the 'mainstream media' is really jumping on this story... But no word on how indie blogs will cover it.

It's hard to know how much of Ariel Pink's stage presence is a put-on and how much is genuine weirdness, but at a certain point, it doesn't matter. When your shtick is being a too-cool-for-school guru of shabby chic who constantly fights the soundman over details that are indistinguishable from the audience, then performs with his back to his fans, well, good luck keeping those fans. Numerous fest-goers took the opportunity to nap under the cool tent, and there was plenty of room to stretch out. Pink's grand finale involved him unplugging his mic then storming off the stage, only to have his flummoxed bandmates coax him back out to the spotlight, where he smoked a cigarette while they finished the set. --C.M.
