Carles writes NBA 'column' for GQ Magazine. Is he 'going mainstream'?

Carles is the blogger behind the popular alt content farm HIPSTER RUNOFF. But now it seems like he has 'spread his wings' and is taking more journalistic/blog-a-rific challenges, writing a 'progressive NBA column' for GQ Magazine's blog website on the buzz teams in the NBA. It appears as though Carles is attempting to 'brand himself' as an NBA Insider & NBA Expert, sharing insights in2 the_league.

Rumors are 'flying', accusing Carles of secretly 'being a mainstreamer' who 'watches tons of sports.' It seems like Carles's days as an alt blogger might be numbered as he moves on to cover sports, politics, and other mainstream crap. Carles is clearly 'at the top of the indie blogosphere', one of the only branded-writer-blogger personalities in the niche, and it is only a matter of time before he 'pulls a James Murphy', and goes out on top.

Carles analyzes buzz teams, similary to how he analyzes buzzbands.

A successful buzzband eventually has to decide, "Do I want to achieve critical relevance and shoot for 9.0s and above from Pitchfork for the rest of my career, or do I want to build a brand that sells albums to markets that actually buy albums?" Eventually, a buzz team must make sacrifices in order to achieve the ultimate mainstream success—an NBA championship.

Carles shares his analysis of the 2k11 'buzz teams of tomorrow'...

I'd say that the Pacers, 76ers and Grizzlies are getting tons of buzz based on their 2011 playoff performances. The buzz team allows post-knowledgeable NBA fans to project visions of greatness for a team of unlikely players who we want to see succeed in the playoffs, not because of a direct emotional commitment to the team, but because buzzing the right team means that you "get" the NBA. You even get to buzz certain players: the ones who are playoffs (Tyler Hansbrough, Marc Gasol, Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner) or the "grizzled veterans who are respected but are ultimately failures who have been rebranded as having 'adapted to new roles'' (Shane Battier, Zach Randolph, Andre Iguodala).
