Every day, buzzbands are searching for a chill website that can host their MP3s and allow them to build an online brand where fans can find them and easily learn abt their music and tour dates. Myspace used to be the #1 buzzband webspace presence, but now bands started 2 use bandcamp, just bc it is the trendy thing to do before the site fails to monetize and buzzbands start 2 use a new platform. Oh well, not sure how I feel abt the name 'bandcamp' anyways.
The popular bandcamp website is now involved in a MASSIVE buzzband scandal involving one of their most famous indie buzzbands--Cults.
Apparently Bandcamp forced Cults to charge people to download their songs (See 6:10 mark of video). They allegedly hit a certain download number, and Bandcamp wanted Cults to charge people to download their MP3s so that bandcamp could take a cut of their buzz bucks. Brian Oblivion, lead guitarist of Cults, went on record saying "FUCK BANDCAMP." As much as we'd like to glorify online tools that help buzzbands build websites even if it on a crappily-subdomained URL, we must acknowledge the darkside of Bandcamp, and how they might just be stealing from the buzzworthy more than they are giving to the buzzless...
Cults claims that the band would be forced to pay $75 for every 1000 free MP3 downloads. Oblivion continued... "I'm not gonna PAY for people to get it for free. I'll give it to them.
Lead singer Madeline Follin went on to say, "We are shutting our bandcamp down."

Bandcamp has yet to issue a statement on the issue, or on their business practices. This is certainly a dark day for buzzbands, but more importantly, consumers who want to legally download MP3s for free from band websites.
