Arcade Fire wins Polaris Prize, steals $30k prize from other Canadian buzzbands who needed it more

Every one in Canada thinks that the Arcade Fire is the greatest export that their country has ever produced, and they will do anything to 'hype' and 'reward' their golden goose, which is why they gave them the Polaris Prize. The prize is a Canadian gimmick that the country has to 'celebrate its arts/artists' and reward them with money, especially because 'indie' used to be a poor people sport, but now the Arcade Fire are rich, but also 'hella mainstream.'

Now the country has a 'national crisis'-- do we give the Arcade Fire the prize that they deserve, or should we give the $30k prize to a poor artist?

Predictably, the Canadians decided to keep jizzing all over the Arcade Fire, even though they already won prizes that 'mattered more.' Win Butler is a Texan so I'm not sure why he gets to continue to cash in on the whole 'I'm Canadian' thing. Did they need the $30k? The same band that wanted to donate $1 million to charity. Not sure if they ever had/raised that money, but it was a pretty bold 'WE'RE RICH!' statement.

A Grammy, a Juno, a BRIT and as of Monday night, Arcade Fire also has a Polaris Music Prize.

Accepting their $30,000 cheque on stage at Toronto's Masonic Temple is, as that aforementioned list of trophies would suggest, just the most recent accolade the band has scored since the release of their August 2010 concept album The Suburbs. The record has charted as a No. 1 in Canada, as well as the U.S. and the U.K. and elsewhere. It's spawned a short film and topped countless best-of lists. And upon accepting the award with bandmates Richard Reed Parry and Jeremy Gara -- as well as in a brief press conference shortly following -- frontman Win Butler said he's looking forward to watching the next generation of musicians do them one better.

"Just go for it," said Butler upon accepting the prize, addressing "anyone who is under 18 and playing music," and encouraging them to keep at it, even if they feel like what they're doing is crazy. "I want to come back here in 10 years," Butler continued, saying he's looking forward to being blown away by a new era of great music.

Why do Canadians think that they are 'so good' at indie? Aren't they disenfranchised with the corporatization of indie yet? What a bunch of lamestreamers...

At least we got to see this dorky picture of Canada's 'most respected band' holding up a totally cheesy cardboard check. It's like they won a lamestream sweepstakes or something. U look good, Ginger Bro!

Totally humiliating. A huge check? Jesus effing XST.

The band apparently said that they would put the $30k into their studio. Look for Feist to win the award next year.

Win Butler continued 2 feel Canadians his mindie Kool-Aid:

"It doesn't matter if you haven't heard of a band before, it can be the best thing in the world," Butler told the audience while being introduced as one of this year's Short List nominees. "And if you have heard of a band before," he continued, "it doesn't mean it sucks."

Did the Polaris judges 'totally eff this up' or 'nail it'?
Should the Arcade Fire have 'passed' on the money?
Was 'The Suburbs' any good
Did the Arcade Fire steal this money from other buzzbands who 'needed it more'?
Is the Polaris Prize just a big pile of poo, kinda like the Mercury Prize?
Do artists get money for winning a Grammy?
What would u do with $30k?
Why are foreign counties so into hyping their indie bands?
Are u glad we got a 'huge check' meme?
Do u wish the picture was just of Regine and Win Butler holding up a huge check?
