A lot of people tell me ‘Carles, ur an artist’ but I have to tell them, ‘I’m not an artist.
A lot of people tell me ‘Carles, ur an artist’ but I have to tell them, ‘I’m not an artist. I’m a blog.’ After seeing a video of this artist broad giving a microphone a ‘hummer’ while wearing a slutty lil outfit, I feel like I can ‘adamantly confirm’ that I am not an artist. It seems like most authentic art must take place in a gallery with white walls, and there can’t be ‘that many’ people there. It probably has to be an opening where wine is being served, and every1 must stand around and watch/feel pressure to ‘get’ performance artists performing their performance art.

Feel overwhelmed by ‘art.’ As we continue to move forward in time, there are just more&more ways 2 express yourself–more tools, more ways 2 communicate, and more metaphors to be showcased. Kinda makes u wonder what is ‘art’ and what is ‘just being alive.’ Always feel very confused about this topic. I never went to Art History class during undergrad, and actually failed because of my poor attendance. Maybe if I had attended, I would have a better eye for ‘what is art’ and what is ‘bullshit.’

It’s kinda weird how art is supposed to ‘represent life’, and challenge u to think about some aspect of humanity/society is ‘kinda fucked up.’ I am not sure why people think expression is so important. Maybe it’s bc we’re all afraid of dying, and we feel like if we were able to ‘make people think abt life [via art]‘, then we will never be forgotten. If u ‘never forget’, then u will live forever, kinda like 9-11 (until Generation Z has kids).

I feel confused about performance art. It seems like people who ‘just want attention’ made by the demographic of art students who have minimal technical skills, and must ‘get sensationalist.’ Possibly were neglected as children. Like they didn’t have good parents who discouraged them from spending 5 years getting a ‘master’s degree’ in Art. I am not sure if I want to be a designer or an artist when I grow up. Design seems ‘corporate’, and art seems ‘raw.’ Not sure which person I want 2 be 4 the rest of my life.

Not sure how ‘the internet’ has changed art. It seems like u shouldn’t try to make ‘art’ n e more, maybe we should just focus on ‘designing and branding streams of memes.’ I did a googsearch for ‘art vs design’ and this image came up. Maybe it explains everything.

Just want to ‘jack off’ and ’shit’ on objects, but not because I want it to be ‘art’, but because I sincerely have the desire to ‘tug off’ and ‘defecate’ on stuff. Wish I could just ‘be’ without having to put everything in a box/label/genre with dumb name/ stereotype.

Just want to stand in a gallery with a group of my closest bros, buzzed, and ’snicker’ while some1 ’seriously performs’ something that might be ‘very stupid.’

[meme via zoomdoggle]
I am self-aware enough to know that my life is insignificant. Furthermore, my menial job is insignificant. I have no direct impact on society as a whole. My job is not important because I have no relevant skills that are beneficial to society. I am ‘just another brick in the wall. (without a functional college major).’ A few of the other employees who share my same job title are mentally challenged, and perform the job better than me.

The most exciting part of my day is when I put on my iPod and round up shopping carts from the lot. It gives me an opportunity to express myself, and challenge the norms of society. By transitioning my job from ‘just a job’ to ‘an opportunity to be a concept artist’, I can save face with my self-concept. I never saved up to go to art school after dropping out of community college. That does not mean I cannot be an artist. That does not mean that I cannot express myself.

I have a memory bank of meaningful connections with ‘real people.’ You can find out a lot about people by bagging their groceries and helping them to their cars. You must be willing to dig deep inside of yourself and let yourself be ‘you’, no matter the context.

You can be more than just you.
“Think outside the box.”
Think of ways to challenge mainstreamers’ concept of reality.
You are more than just an ‘oddly enough’ design meme.
The circle of shopping carts is a metaphor for _____________.

Do u ever do anything ‘a lil conceptual’ at ur job?

Yall. I’m kinda confused. When I went away to design school, I knew that I wanted to express myself. It’s kinda hard 2. It’s like the way that people consume and interpret information has totally changed. It keeps changing.

DOES N E 1 KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ART, DESIGN, AND MEMES?

I was looking at the FFFFound website, and it made me totally confused.

Is this art or a meme?

Is this art or a viral meme packaged as ‘authentic’ due to ‘relevant commentary on the state of society’?

h8 u Banksy. H8 u graffiti ‘art’ memes.

Is this a marketing viral meme by the Lego corporation, or just an internet meme that I am supposed to marvel at for 3.5 seconds, or art?

Is this art or meme or high priced gimmick art?

Is this architecture or just a meme marketing gimmick?

Is this art or just a viral marketing gimmick featuring Taye Zonday?

I’m just trying 2 design, yall. Want 2 change the world.

Do yall ever feel confused about the media that ur supposed 2 consume?
Don’t yall feel like photography has s000 been cheapened by digital cameras?
Don’t u wish u could live without the internet so u could experience art/memes/design?
Things r getting s0 modern. I always assumed that as things got more post-post-pre-modern, that we’d finally all ‘get it.’ These days I don’t get n e thing.
Just want 2 understand what I’m supposed 2 appreciate in order 2 understand what’s happening in the world, carry on relevant conversations with well-informed people about relevant topics, and be able to process this information in an efficient, valuable manner.
/// NOT READY 4 THE W0RLD ///
//// s0 much information, yall

Not really good with ‘percentages’, so yall might have 2 help me with what percentage of total breastage and total nippage is showing. It took me 4 years to ‘graduate’ from Algebra before I dropped out of HS. :-( I was just better at art and writing. I’m getting my portfolio together to submit it to dropbox-admissions@parsons-pratt.edu . What are yall doing?

I fall asleep in the middle of blogging sometimes, or when I am waiting for my food at Chili’s. Sometimes even when I am at my local scene’s weekly electro night. I’m just glad that I bought this pillowHat so that I can fall sleep n e where & every where. Yay yall! (I just get s0 bored with the scene sometimes. Same drama over and over.)

It just sux cuz I’ve had to work a lot since my Macbook crashed. I h8 making excuses to my bosses who ‘don’t get me’ and can’t appreciate how unique/cultured I am. To make money to finance my new iMac, I got a job in the electroConstruction industry. Usually I’d be embarrassed 2 wear a ‘poor person uniform’, but I think this neon construction vest really aligns with my personal brand.

[by Colette/GAP: a mainstream+alt collab]

Yall need to go to college so u don’t end up working menial jobs like me. If you attend college for at least 1 year, you will be guaranteed any job u want in the restaurant/coffee shop industry. It might even open doors to be ‘the guy who takes money’ at the door of a club.
DON’T END UP LIKE CARLES. GO 2 ART COLLEGE (for 1+ semester).
FOLLOW YALLS DREAMS. (don’t have 2 actually graduate, but being around an economy of young people will help u feel better abt urself + enable u to set alternativeGoals.)

Carles says:
first of all–put a password on your MacBook. U NEVER want some1 to find out what sites u’ve been browsing. The truth is that your friend is still a mainstreamer, but her context has just changed. U need to embrace her inauthentic new personal brand, and certainly try to get tugged by her gaggle of friends. If you present yourself as an authentic source of trends, new music, and a general value system with which they live their life by+see the world, then u will have it good. Just be sure that you are prepared for your ego to take a hit when an altMale who is more respected in the scene is able to swoon your impressionable tugger away from your control.
MainstreamersGoneAlt are a blessing and a curse, yall.
Carles says:
Xanga is for AZNs. Blogger is for generic people who post 3 times and then quit. Wordpress is for douchebaggy blogs about politics/parenting. Tumblr is for alts/high end design meme consumers. Livejournal is from people who are stuck in the year 2000. Twitter is ass holes. Typepad is for old people. Geocities are for authentic alts?

Carles says:
In the altWorld, the Age of Consent = the age where some1 decides to implement alternative trends into their personal brand. Even if they are as young as 14, something as simple as wearing an interesting shirt, or wearing trendy mom jeans is basically them admitting that ‘they are available on the tug market.’ If it would make you feel more comfortable being with a younger woman, you can always purchase a pair of child predator glasses at ur local pharmacy.

carles,
i desperately need advice on how to deal with a friend of mine. this summer she is totally becoming an alt after a life of being a mainstreamer. i don;t know how to handle it!? at first it was subtle things, she got some kute bangs and started wearing some tighter jeans and even bought some chucks and wayfarers (i lol’d). she caught me off guard when she asked me what i thought of the new girl talk album, i was like…. “ughhhhh, what? no” and she was like “yeah, i totally think nite ripper was better”…. i was just shocked. now she listens to justice and mia and all that other entry shit and i heard her call herself a hipster (i cringed). i get tha
t she wants to be kute and trendy but seeing this change firsthand is confusing! PLS, what should i do? should i bring it up and talk to her about it or just stay quiet and observe? should i try to help her not look like such an obvious mainstreamer gone alt? try to get tugged by her new gang of vapid trend-whore friends?
PS
pls keep this annonymous, i have a suspicion she might have found ur blog after using my macbook

Don’t fall in love with them, ever!

*********
AspiringBlogger69 asks:

do u think i should get blog, blogspot, or xanga? u are the only person i trust to answer this question. i want every1 to read my blog all day everyday.

Carles says:
Good question! I’d take a tug from either one, but girls are insecure, so they probably have more opinions about this 1.

for example, like:

what are the electrowars? when are they coming? and why?
can an electroholocaust be avoided, or is it now an inextricable part of ‘destiny’?
how do you think the warring factions will divide? Alts vs. Streamers? and Alt on Alt warcrime? and what about Double Agents?
who are likely to be killed off and who shall endure? how can i increase my chances of survival?

what exactly is the Alt/Stream ‘dialectique’ ?
when alts become streamers, are they still alts underneath? or have their souls/personal brands been forever subsumed into ‘the square paradigm’?

The bad thing about having a unique point of view is that u feel an obligation to learn the tools which will help u express urself. This leads u 2 art school/design school.

As the world evolves, more unique people are born, meaning more people who need to express themselves, meaning more art schools. It sux because we don’t have n e 1 to do menial jobs @ McDonalds, or be accountants n e more. I wish there were less artists so that our economy would be g00d again.

Letter from a Self Aware Artist:

crls,
you’re doing a great job keeping us up to date on breaking updates in the electro war and koowky azn fashions but what about art schools?
come on carleserslerers, this place is an alt factory. a place where impressionable 18 year olds become subjected to some of the most altyaltmcalts in their major metropolitan city (art schoolers confidence is rooted in both impeccably alt fashion choices and “culturedness” in fine arts and theory). the velocity of going from a mnstrmr to an alt in the freshman year of art school is unparalled. there’s not even an entry level alt phase. every day spent wearing boot cut jeans and messy graphic screen printed tee shirts that used to seem cool and unique in yr florida suburb back home is a day spent not making friends at fine art schools. and let me clarify the difference between art schools. schools like saic (chicago), smfa (boston), cooper union (new york) are FINE art schools. fine art schools are tiny. they make really pretentious performances pieces and spend most of their time talking about gender roles. these are the altest art schools. there are secret cliques that i can’t even tel you about because they are internet resistant the goretex on a northface jacket. these cliques are so ruthlessly hip you might never even know they exist. regular art schools, like columbia college (chicago), cal arts (san fransisco), pratt (new york), massarts (boston), mica (baltimore) are huge bro’d down schools. they all have like, 20,000 students and they’re mainly made up of animation and graphic design dave mathews band white baseball cap bros, anime loving goth sluts and entry, entry level alts. their may be a dozen or so high level alts at these huge schools but they are probably there for “art theory” and only go because “they got a huge scholarship” (while the more alt fine art school in the same city didn’t give them one, but they’d never admit to it for fear of losing cred). listen, i could babble on about this forever. art school is really important crlsrlsrs, ok?
