I am excited about the future of the internet + music journalism

I totes <3 the internet yall. It really 'levels the playing field' and gives every1 the same opportunity to 'show the world who u r' and 'convey ur perspective on the world.'

I recently stumbled upon two LosAngelesBros who were looking to 'let the world experience concerts' through their own eyes. This is the power of vlogging / youtube + accessibility to cameras that cost below $500. Something I wish I had done when I used 2 be an altbro & I got my first Volvo station wagon+got to go to any concert I wanted 2.

Video: Two Bros Vlogging About a Chromeo Concert

</embed>

Favourite moment: "That shit was... CRACKING"bro at 50 second mark
Important question: Will these bros get picked up by pitchfork.tv ?

Yall probably think u need to go to Pitchfork, hipster runoff, or Guerilla Versus Bro to 'get closer to artists' and 'recreate the live experience.' However, it is people on the ground level who will revolutionize music journalism. We're not looking for opinions on music any more--we just want to go to concerts, enjoy the music, get our dance & sweat on, and then talk about how meaningful the experience was with a group of 'buzzed' people outside of the concert.

I remember in the past I blogged about the future of music journalism, and how things are getting s00 out of control with 'taking the internet s00 seriously.' However, I think internet criticism will become less important in the next 5-10 years, and people will be more interested in 'getting closer 2 artists' and 'real people' who are going through fan experiences. It's more authentic if u report about music when ur not on the guestlist. It makes u a more authentic fan, and your experience is more meaningful, therefore, the story is more interesting.

Are yall excited about the future of music journalism?
will u and 1 of ur bros start up a new eCompany/website?
Does n e 1 know how 2 buy a dot-com / register with a blogger website?
Are yall still excited about 'the live music experience' or is that too entry level?

Is it still important 2 yall 2 get rid of the emos?

I remember reading a long time ago that there was some sort of ethnic cleansing of emo kids happening in the Third World. Apparently when they are not educated, so in the 3rd World, they think that 'trends' are important movements. Kinda sux for kids who are getting beat up 4 no reason, but I feel like there are s000 many people on our Earth after the Chinese Olympics made China marketable. Now that ppl are moving there and they have Wal Marts, we have 2 start seriously thinking about population regulation.

There's just not enough Sparks/PBR/Chili's/McGriddles/Chicken Nuggles/Hands 2 tug in the world 4 all of us. Soul can't meet body if there are too many bodies and not enough soulz.

Hopefully Barry Obama brings his radical red ideas 2 save our nation.
Has n e 1 else been a lil bit worried about Pressy Obama? He's been doing a lot of zany stuff that I'm not sure if I want my President doing.
Did yall hear he joined the Chromeos and then did a DJ Set as "DJ HE H8 BLAQUE PRE$IDENT"?

'u can h8 me now, but I won't stop now.' -Barack Obamsmith

Hope he is okay in the head... heard he's thinking of ending it all. don't go anywhere, Barry. Miss u already.

Seen n e g00d music videos lately?

I enjoy blggng about 'new-ish' music videos in a recap-mega-post format because most 'made for youtube' era music videos are not newsworthy enough to blog abt by themselves, unless your music video is about coloured kids terrorizing a city.

Van She - "Changes"

Another video in the genre of 'tour diary where we showcase that our band is a group of sillie friends who are going through a meaningful experience on the road together' video. Other notable videos in this genre are the Strokes "Some Day", Phantom Planet's "California" and the 2008 summer anthem "Faith" by Limp Bizkit. All of these videos make me wish that I was able to experience fame, yet still maintain an appreciation for 'the small, trivial stuff' that makes us human.

RATATAT - "Flynn"

Here is a perfect video in the 'crappy/underwhelming college video art that your friend in art school who wants you to appreciate, but you know he did all of the work for it in the final 3 hours before deadline while under the unnecessary influence of adderal+marijuana' genre. Gotta love concepts that are 'appreciated' because they piggyback off a previous piece of media that most Americans can identify. <3

Paul Simon - "You Can Call Me Al"
This video reminds me of the first generation of Cool/Free Spirited BabyBoomer parents who tried to get their 7 year old kid to appreciate the social value of music by playing this 'masterfully crafted pop song' which is also about 'ending apartheid.' U CAN CALL ME AL was an overrated song, and I'd consider the video something that 'would have GONE VIRAL' if they had the internet back then. So since there wasn't the internet, we have to remember it forever when we should only remember it as 'the gimmicky video that Chevy Chase was in.' Did yall like The Graduate soundtrack? Was Chevy Chase's only good movie "National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation"? When will Chevy Chase have a Bill-Murray-like 'deep, indie' phase of his career?

Feist - "1-2-3-4" (Elmo Vs. Cookie Monster: Big Bird is a closet-homo REMIX)

In an effort to match Feist's royalty fees from her iPod nano commercial, the Sesame Street Workshop gave Leslie Feist the rights to 10% of Muppet creator Jim Henson's estate. BUT SRSLY...is educational entertainment 'important'/'justifiable' enough to turn your song into a pile of crappiness? Is this a secret advertisement for 'moms who have to watch Sesame Street with their kids and are considering buying some new CDs at Target + getting a fresh, new haircut with bangs"?

Plus... don't kids watch stuff like Yo Gabba Gabba/Dora The Lil Alt Explorer/other conceptual+homoerotic shows like the Teletubbies now because their cool parents want them to fit in?

Also, why isn't THE COUNT in this video? It would be kind of like making a Weezer video without including __________(easily identifiable gimmick).

Leslie Feist really has the energy in this 1-2-3-4 remix video to make every altbro wish that she was his free-spirited mom who drove a Volvo station wagon and made 'tasty yet healthy' dinners every night (note: she also packed the best smart snacks).

BUT SRSLY... is it okay to change the lyrics of your song for the sake of 'education,' but it's not okay to change your lyrics if U want 2 go outback 2nite?

Of Montreal - "Let's Go Outback Tonight"

This music video is way better than any deep Radiohead music video.

XX BONUS THOUGHT ON THE STATE OF MODERN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING XX

Participating in educational shows/shows for kids that are pyramid schemes to get kids to buy apparel-that-features-creatures does not make u a public servant.

Yo Gabba Gabba is a pyramid scheme to unite alt-parents and kids under one lifestyle brand with the ultimate goal of 'buying crap with creatures on it.'

YO GABBA GABBA/Kid robot crap: so quirkily alt that kids & parents can wear it!

Burning questions:
If you are an alt-kid whose free-spirited parents make over $100K/year, does ur hair automatically turn curly?
Should there be a law against lifestyle brands that target kids under the age of 5?

although i can plainly see what a gif is. what is a gif? or what's its full name?

Wikipedia says:
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is an 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

The format uses a palette of up to 256 distinct colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for more simple images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

It's like a JPG, but more fun and has a 300% higher myspace Top 8 Click-Through rate.

What is a PYT?

Wikipedia says:
P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" is a hit single from Michael Jackson's 1982 hit album Thriller.

The song was originally written by Jackson and Greg Phillinganes and was a mid-tempo R&B jam. Quincy Jones wanted it to be more upbeat so he re-wrote it and it was Jones' version that appeared on the Thriller album.

  • Part of the lyrics to Justice's single "D.A.N.C.E." mentions "You were such a P.Y.T.". Justice have said that "D.A.N.C.E." is a direct tribute to Michael Jackson.
  • The lyric "Tendoroni, you've got to be" was inspiration for Chromeo's single "Tenderoni".

Here's the youtube video of Michael Jackson's "PYT" that may or may not have inspired Justice's "D.A.N.C.E.":

Chromeo: Overbranded and too Gimmicky?

In the past month, I've scanned a lot of 'TOP SONGS/TOP ALBUMS of 2007', and of course there are the obvious choices. Most TOP SONGZ lists fall between the range of 'what sounded fun but won't be memorable' (this is what HIPSTER RUNOFF's list will be 60% about) and 'Stuff that we will probably remember in 10 years' (this blog made a halfway accurate list that's worth glancing at/making a hilarious comment at).

When it comes to bands that have been successful this year, and ended up having an awkward performance on a late night show indicating their crossover appeal with people who actually BUY music, I've been a bit surprised that Chromeo hasn't left a more memorable dent in these lists.

While I know 'of course it's just Chromeo', I think that their level of PRESS + BlogLuv + demand for mp3s has warranted them more 'end of year list' consideration. I will always download a Chromeo MP3, but they're definitely not on my end of year list!

'We're Chromeo. Every1 can like us.'

BURNING QUESTIONS about Chromeo's band business model:
1. Has VICE overbranded or misbranded them?
2. Would they be more 'critically acclaimed' if they were still 'just 2 dudes' instead of band with a marketing machine behind them?
3. Do they need more extreme differentiation strategies?
3a. Should the gangster looking dude turn into a robot?
4. In terms of 'the mainstream appeal' that they have, has their sound slotted them into being associated with 'OMG! this sounds like a 1 hit wonder from the 80s!'
5. How has Chromeo managed to warrant HYPE but not necessarily the BEST of 2K7-ability. Did Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E.' take the annual 'I know this song is a gimmick, but I have to put one electrodancey song on my list' slot?

In conclusion, 'Whatever! Just keep me dancin' Chromebros! Yall are pretty alright. Don't let any one keep you from following ur dreams. It doesn't matter what bloggers say.'

Remix Contests Are an Important Marketing Strategy for Modern Record Labels

I'm looking forward to the day where we're tired of seeing so many remix contest GIFs in the sidebars of blogs. We can all complain about there being so many remixes of songs that were already close to perfect in their original form. (Some people might already feel this way.)

Remix Contests force the bloggers to blog about the band atleast 2.5 times. It's a good situation because remixes are helpful for all parties involved, even the blog.

Here are two Notable Remix "Contests

Chromeo Remix Contest
http://www.u-myx.com/Music/Chromeo/Tenderoni
This remix contest is run by U-MYX, which provides software for the users to remix the songs with. Imagine messing with all of the tracks from "Tenderoni" in an interface that's so easy, even myspace kids can use it. U-MYX is like remixing + a social network. It may or may not be 'the future.'

The Kitsune Remix Contest for Thieves Like Us has also mildly taken over the blogosphere. Having this GIF on your website means that you are a blog worth taking seriously.

Chromeo 100% (Mercurius FM Tenderoni Vinyl Only Mix)

SymbolOne: You Need Them on Your iPod

SymbolOne is the best band you haven't heard of yet.
I think their music is as satisfying as Justice, travels a complete journey like a Daft Punk song, and has the pop appeal of Chromeo jams.

Their song 'Everything Louder Then Everything Else' will probably end up being one of my top songs of 2007. It reminds me of the Van She remix of "Gravity's Rainbow" by the Klaxons, but better.

MP3: Symbol One - Everything Louder Then Everything Else [You MUST DL this song] [As highly rec'cd as it gets!]
MP3: SymbolOne - Love Juice

Their limited edition vinyl is coming soon. The EP will be A side "Everything louder then, everything else" + one more song, and the B side will have 2 remixes. We'll post buying information when it becomes available.

Chromeo: The Next Crossover Band That We Feel Like We're Not Allowed to Like Any More?

MTV's Buzzworthy Blog features Chromeo this week.

Of course they make amazing music, but maybe it's just going to be annoying when all of the mainstreamers are post-post ironically having fun while listening to Chromeo, and saying "Let's have a party where we dress up like we're in the 1980s." Then you'll log into facebook one Monday morning, and see a bunch of pictures of girls dressed like they are from the 1980s, and having a lot of fun.

So Buzzworthy.

Here's a pretty funny comment from the Buzzworthy blog:

I've been listening to Chromeo for a couple years now. But of course, I don't have as much power as mtv. so mtv, what made you decide that this artist should be liked by everyone that watches The Hills?

Chromeo's good, but I think the blogosphere will probably focus more on Calvin Harris now that Chromeo is 'no longer ours.'

If any one is serious about remixing, it's Mercurius FM. He's from Phoenix, Arizona, and he is representative of the next wave of dedicated musicians who are churning hard day and night to remix hits.

Mercurius says:

Well, basically music is my life. Everything else is second. I basically work my ass off working on trax. haha Hows that for a persona?

If you are a band, you should probably have him remix your songs. He really GETS THE JOB DONE.
Anyways, he's going to be pretty big soon, so you might as well put him on your iPod and name drop him to your friends.

RECAP: Alt Celebrity Halloween Costumes [from Best Coast 2 Skrillex 2 Kickball Katy 2 Chrissy Owens]

Were u wondering what ur favourite alt celebs were 4 Halloween?

Sorta wish I coulda gone to a relevant Halloween Partie where I saw tons of alt celebs, DJs, and CEOs of buzzbands :-(

At least I can look at pix of them on the internet and pretend they are my friends and pretend we went out and had fun and ate candy. :-)

Ezra Koenig throws down sax solo with Chromeo at Coachella
</embed>

Ezra Koenig is considered to be one of the most-desired indie hunks in all of music. He has many fan blogs dedicated to his talent and good looks. These Ezra super-fans were treated to a delightful treat when Ezra Koenig sang "I Could Be Wrong" on stage with Chromeo at Coachella. In addition, he played the sax on stage, throwing down a 'sick solo' which might establish him as the 'Alt-Kenny G' even though Kenny G plays the sax that is shaped like a long, skinny peen.

Ezra looks good, bb!

Chromeo has played live with Darryl Hall, so u have to wonder if Ezra Koenig was a 'step up' or a 'step down' from the previous collaboration. One thing is for sure, these two Alt-Jewish hunks made every relevant altJew in the crowds pants nice and warm and creamie.

Did Ezra 'crush it'?
Should he play more saxophone in Vampy Weeks?
Who would yall rather sleep with: Dave 1 or Ezra Koenig?
Do u think Dave 1 and Ezra should both 'go solo' then 'collab' on a 'sick collab project'?
Is Ezra Koenig the #1 hunk in indie?

Aziz Ansari tries to be alt by going 2 SXSW and bronoodling with alt celebs

Aziz Ansari is an alternative comedian who is still trying to figure out if he wants to 'go mainstream' and write Chris Rock-level standup, or if he is comfortable being a niche indie comic that does bits on indie buzzbands. He is in some comedy on NBC that no1 watches unless you don't own a TV and are still a big enough loser 2 spend hours watching hulu on your laptop. Anyways, he went to SXSW and hung out with relevant alt celebs to try to prove that he is totally relevant and alt.

Here is he with Kanye West.

Aziz Ansari and alt DJ A-Trak

The Brothers Macklovitch bronoodling [via IRL bros], bragging that they have the most authentic altJew existences in the world.

Is Aziz Ansari 'funny'/'relevant'?
Is he an authentic indie bro, or just a Sprawl-II-wave streamer?
Are ppl who watch NBC lofi digital comedies the modern version of lamestreamers?
Can Aziz Ansari 'go mainstream' or is his comedy too niche?
Are black ppl the funniest comedians because they can say 'the n-word'?
Is it 'alt' 4 mainstream celebs 2 go 2 alt festivals/events?

Chromeo performs on Conan. Have they had a successful career?
</embed>

I just watched Chromeo performing on Conan, but I don't even really have an opinion on the performance at all. Sorta past the point of even 'caring' abt indie bands on late night television shows. Chromeo seems alright. Don't really listen to them much, but I guess they are 'good at music', even though I can't really tell the difference between their oldest songs and their newest songs.

Sorta wonder if we 'hold it against them' for being consistently good, but maybe that's their fault, because in modern indie, u have to pull out as many new gimmicks + drama as possible 2 keep ppl interested in u. I wonder if Conan listens 2 Chromeo, or if he thinks they are 'just another dumb indie band' that he zoned out during.

Do yall <3 Chromeo?
Can they 'make the leap' and 'go mainstream' on their 5th album?
Is A-Trak more successful than his brother?
Do ppl h8 Chromeo because they are 'ethnic' but 'not black'?
If Chromeo was 'black', would the indiesphere like them more?

A-Trak and Dave 1 do a DJ set 2 show off how relevant their bloodline is

The Brothers Macklovitch consist of Dave 1 from Chromeo and A-Trak, the popular altstream DJ. They were both generated from the same set of parents, so they have a bond that is deeper than any BFF-ship. Just saw this picture of them DJing, and it made me wish I had an alternative brother who was really in2 'the scene' and had the same drive as I did to be 'hella relevant.' Sometimes even wish I just had a brother who I could talk 2, some1 who understood me and my problems. I wish I could be a better sibling 2 all of my bros and sisters, but they are all kinda mainstreamers and lamestreamers, but deep down, they are still good people.

Honestly, I'll never form a relevant DJ duo with my brother. I might never write a hit indie EP, and he sure as hell won't. We might never have anything in common again, unless we both have kids and then we can talk abt how we have to change poopy diapers and complain about 'the old ball and chain.'

Do u wish u had a relevant sibling who 'understood' the scene?
Do u want 2 be buzzworthy with ur family?
Do u wish u had alt parents?
If 2 members of a family are alt, is one of u just into 'being alt' for the sake of 'doing drugs'?
R u jealous of Dave 1 and A-Trak for their eternal alt bond?

Ex-Chillwaving Jonas Brother tweets abt how ‘off da chain’ the new Chromeo album is

Joe Jonas is a popular brother in the popular rock band the Jonas Brothers. I remember one time he tweeted abt how 'bad ass' Neon Indian was [link], but it seems like now he has 'moved on', given up on chillwave indie vibes, and moved on to post-bloghouse dance act The Chromeo.

It seems like Chromeo is 'gimmicky' enough 2 be likable by mainstream markets, just as long as they are introduced in the right context, like at a meaningful music festival, or maybe in a sweet Mountain Dew commercial. I wonder if this means that Chromeo has 'made the leap' and taken their 'poor man's Hall and Oates' brand to the mainstream. After this tweet, is Chromeo guaranteed at least a million digital mp3 sales?

Not sure if he is an authentic indie fan, though. He might be more of a Christian rock bro. He went on to tweet abt how 'bad ass' the popular mainstream Christian rock band Switchfoot is.

Sorta wish he would make up his mind: Is he all about Christian rock vibes + connecting with Jesus, or does he care more about 'synth electro pop' songs abt 'feisty females who u just can't seem to control'?

Is Joe Jonas the 'ultimate indie fan'?
Do u think Chromeo will 'cross over'?
Will the Jonas Brothers try 2 sound 'more electro'?
Will the Jonas Brothers try 2 sound 'more spiritual' [via Christian Switchfoots]?
When a mainstream famous person tweets abt an indie band, has the band 'made it' and will they see 'an influx of fans' + 'surge in digital sales'?
Have u heard the new Chromeo? Is it 'off the mother effing chain'?
