I totes

I totes <3 the internet yall. It really 'levels the playing field' and gives every1 the same opportunity to 'show the world who u r' and 'convey ur perspective on the world.'

I recently stumbled upon two LosAngelesBros who were looking to 'let the world experience concerts' through their own eyes. This is the power of vlogging / youtube + accessibility to cameras that cost below $500. Something I wish I had done when I used 2 be an altbro & I got my first Volvo station wagon+got to go to any concert I wanted 2.

Video: Two Bros Vlogging About a Chromeo Concert

Favourite moment: “That shit was… CRACKING”bro at 50 second mark
Important question: Will these bros get picked up by pitchfork.tv ?

Yall probably think u need to go to Pitchfork, hipster runoff, or Guerilla Versus Bro to ‘get closer to artists’ and ‘recreate the live experience.’ However, it is people on the ground level who will revolutionize music journalism. We’re not looking for opinions on music any more–we just want to go to concerts, enjoy the music, get our dance & sweat on, and then talk about how meaningful the experience was with a group of ‘buzzed’ people outside of the concert.

I remember in the past I blogged about the future of music journalism, and how things are getting s00 out of control with ‘taking the internet s00 seriously.’ However, I think internet criticism will become less important in the next 5-10 years, and people will be more interested in ‘getting closer 2 artists’ and ‘real people’ who are going through fan experiences. It’s more authentic if u report about music when ur not on the guestlist. It makes u a more authentic fan, and your experience is more meaningful, therefore, the story is more interesting.

Are yall excited about the future of music journalism?
will u and 1 of ur bros start up a new eCompany/website?
Does n e 1 know how 2 buy a dot-com / register with a blogger website?
Are yall still excited about ‘the live music experience’ or is that too entry level?

Have u ever met an altJew? Do they deserve 2 b a relevant alt minority demographic? I don’t think they are as significant as Mexicalts, Blipsters, or AZNs. Or can we just lump them in with Whipsters? Are all Jews ‘privileged’ and therefore unable to reach authentic alternative status? Who are the most relevant Jews in the alternative community? Do u have any friends who are Jewish?

Do u have any altJew role models?

Are Jews the alt-est group of peoples on the planet?
Are Jews inherently alt/alt-er than all of us?

Do yall think DJ AM is srsly ‘the chosen 1′?

I remember reading a long time ago that there was some sort of ethnic cleansing of emo kids happening in the Third World. Apparently when they are not educated, so in the 3rd World, they think that ‘trends’ are important movements. Kinda sux for kids who are getting beat up 4 no reason, but I feel like there are s000 many people on our Earth after the Chinese Olympics made China marketable. Now that ppl are moving there and they have Wal Marts, we have 2 start seriously thinking about population regulation.

There’s just not enough Sparks/PBR/Chili’s/McGriddles/Chicken Nuggles/Hands 2 tug in the world 4 all of us. Soul can’t meet body if there are too many bodies and not enough soulz.

Hopefully Barry Obama brings his radical red ideas 2 save our nation.
Has n e 1 else been a lil bit worried about Pressy Obama? He’s been doing a lot of zany stuff that I’m not sure if I want my President doing.
Did yall hear he joined the Chromeos and then did a DJ Set as “DJ HE H8 BLAQUE PRE$IDENT”?
‘u can h8 me now, but I won’t stop now.’ -Barack Obamsmith

Hope he is okay in the head… heard he’s thinking of ending it all. don’t go anywhere, Barry. Miss u already.

I enjoy blggng about ‘new-ish’ music videos in a recap-mega-post format because most ‘made for youtube’ era music videos are not newsworthy enough to blog abt by themselves, unless your music video is about coloured kids terrorizing a city.

Van She – “Changes”

Another video in the genre of ‘tour diary where we showcase that our band is a group of sillie friends who are going through a meaningful experience on the road together’ video. Other notable videos in this genre are the Strokes “Some Day“, Phantom Planet’s “California” and the 2008 summer anthem “Faith” by Limp Bizkit. All of these videos make me wish that I was able to experience fame, yet still maintain an appreciation for ‘the small, trivial stuff’ that makes us human.

RATATAT – “Flynn”

Here is a perfect video in the ‘crappy/underwhelming college video art that your friend in art school who wants you to appreciate, but you know he did all of the work for it in the final 3 hours before deadline while under the unnecessary influence of adderal+marijuana’ genre. Gotta love concepts that are ‘appreciated’ because they piggyback off a previous piece of media that most Americans can identify. <3

Paul Simon – “You Can Call Me Al”
This video reminds me of the first generation of Cool/Free Spirited BabyBoomer parents who tried to get their 7 year old kid to appreciate the social value of music by playing this ‘masterfully crafted pop song’ which is also about ‘ending apartheid.’ U CAN CALL ME AL was an overrated song, and I’d consider the video something that ‘would have GONE VIRAL’ if they had the internet back then. So since there wasn’t the internet, we have to remember it forever when we should only remember it as ‘the gimmicky video that Chevy Chase was in.’ Did yall like The Graduate soundtrack? Was Chevy Chase’s only good movie “National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation”? When will Chevy Chase have a Bill-Murray-like ‘deep, indie’ phase of his career?

Feist – “1-2-3-4″ (Elmo Vs. Cookie Monster: Big Bird is a closet-homo REMIX)

In an effort to match Feist’s royalty fees from her iPod nano commercial, the Sesame Street Workshop gave Leslie Feist the rights to 10% of Muppet creator Jim Henson’s estate. BUT SRSLY…is educational entertainment ‘important’/'justifiable’ enough to turn your song into a pile of crappiness? Is this a secret advertisement for ‘moms who have to watch Sesame Street with their kids and are considering buying some new CDs at Target + getting a fresh, new haircut with bangs”?

Plus… don’t kids watch stuff like Yo Gabba Gabba/Dora The Lil Alt Explorer/other conceptual+homoerotic shows like the Teletubbies now because their cool parents want them to fit in?

Also, why isn’t THE COUNT in this video? It would be kind of like making a Weezer video without including __________(easily identifiable gimmick).

Leslie Feist really has the energy in this 1-2-3-4 remix video to make every altbro wish that she was his free-spirited mom who drove a Volvo station wagon and made ‘tasty yet healthy’ dinners every night (note: she also packed the best smart snacks).

BUT SRSLY… is it okay to change the lyrics of your song for the sake of ‘education,’ but it’s not okay to change your lyrics if U want 2 go outback 2nite?

Of Montreal – “Let’s Go Outback Tonight”

This music video is way better than any deep Radiohead music video.

XX BONUS THOUGHT ON THE STATE OF MODERN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING XX

Participating in educational shows/shows for kids that are pyramid schemes to get kids to buy apparel-that-features-creatures does not make u a public servant.

Yo Gabba Gabba is a pyramid scheme to unite alt-parents and kids under one lifestyle brand with the ultimate goal of ‘buying crap with creatures on it.’

YO GABBA GABBA/Kid robot crap: so quirkily alt that kids & parents can wear it!

Burning questions:
If you are an alt-kid whose free-spirited parents make over $100K/year, does ur hair automatically turn curly?
Should there be a law against lifestyle brands that target kids under the age of 5?

A-TRAK is brothers with DAVE1 (the white guy from Chromeo)

A-TRAK and Dave1’s share the last name of “Macklovitch”, which helps us to understand why they decided to pull an R.L. Stine-style name change.

A-TRAK is Kanye West’s touring DJ

Kid Sister and A-TRAK are in one of the highest profile inter-racial alternative celebrity relationships.

Kid Sister and Kanye West collabed on a kute song about nails.

Watch this video of two alternative celebrity Macklovitch brothers being interviewed and talking about how their parents monitor their myspace pages.

I can’t believe DAVE 1 from Chromeo hates gheys and electronic music.

These videos do a good job of making all of these alt-celebs seem like ‘regular people who I would want to drink a can of Sparks with.’

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post “PNAU + Ladyhawke = Functional Team”:

although i can plainly see what a gif is. what is a gif? or what’s its full name?

Wikipedia says:
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is an 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

The format uses a palette of up to 256 distinct colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. It also supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame. The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for more simple images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

It’s like a JPG, but more fun and has a 300% higher myspace Top 8 Click-Through rate.
————-

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post “Will this jumpstart your modeling and acting caree…”:

What is a PYT?

Wikipedia says:
P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” is a hit single from Michael Jackson’s 1982 hit album Thriller.

The song was originally written by Jackson and Greg Phillinganes and was a mid-tempo R&B jam. Quincy Jones wanted it to be more upbeat so he re-wrote it and it was Jones’ version that appeared on the Thriller album.

Part of the lyrics to Justice’s single “D.A.N.C.E.” mentions “You were such a P.Y.T.”. Justice have said that “D.A.N.C.E.” is a direct tribute to Michael Jackson.

The lyric “Tendoroni, you’ve got to be” was inspiration for Chromeo’s single “Tenderoni”.

Here’s the youtube video of Michael Jackson’s “PYT” that may or may not have inspired Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.”:

In the past month, I’ve scanned a lot of ‘TOP SONGS/TOP ALBUMS of 2007′, and of course there are the obvious choices. Most TOP SONGZ lists fall between the range of ‘what sounded fun but won’t be memorable’ (this is what HIPSTER RUNOFF’s list will be 60% about) and ‘Stuff that we will probably remember in 10 years’ (this blog made a halfway accurate list that’s worth glancing at/making a hilarious comment at).

When it comes to bands that have been successful this year, and ended up having an awkward performance on a late night show indicating their crossover appeal with people who actually BUY music, I’ve been a bit surprised that Chromeo hasn’t left a more memorable dent in these lists.

While I know ‘of course it’s just Chromeo’, I think that their level of PRESS + BlogLuv + demand for mp3s has warranted them more ‘end of year list’ consideration. I will always download a Chromeo MP3, but they’re definitely not on my end of year list!

‘We’re Chromeo. Every1 can like us.’

BURNING QUESTIONS about Chromeo’s band business model:
1. Has VICE overbranded or misbranded them?
2. Would they be more ‘critically acclaimed’ if they were still ‘just 2 dudes’ instead of band with a marketing machine behind them?
3. Do they need more extreme differentiation strategies?
3a. Should the gangster looking dude turn into a robot?
4. In terms of ‘the mainstream appeal’ that they have, has their sound slotted them into being associated with ‘OMG! this sounds like a 1 hit wonder from the 80s!’
5. How has Chromeo managed to warrant HYPE but not necessarily the BEST of 2K7-ability. Did Justice’s ‘D.A.N.C.E.’ take the annual ‘I know this song is a gimmick, but I have to put one electrodancey song on my list’ slot?

In conclusion, ‘Whatever! Just keep me dancin’ Chromebros! Yall are pretty alright. Don’t let any one keep you from following ur dreams. It doesn’t matter what bloggers say.’

I’m looking forward to the day where we’re tired of seeing so many remix contest GIFs in the sidebars of blogs. We can all complain about there being so many remixes of songs that were already close to perfect in their original form. (Some people might already feel this way.)

Remix Contests force the bloggers to blog about the band atleast 2.5 times. It’s a good situation because remixes are helpful for all parties involved, even the blog.

Here are two Notable Remix “Contests

Chromeo Remix Contest
http://www.u-myx.com/Music/Chromeo/Tenderoni
This remix contest is run by U-MYX, which provides software for the users to remix the songs with. Imagine messing with all of the tracks from “Tenderoni” in an interface that’s so easy, even myspace kids can use it. U-MYX is like remixing + a social network. It may or may not be ‘the future.’

Drugs in my Body

http://kitsune.fr/~tlu-remix/
The Kitsune Remix Contest for Thieves Like Us has also mildly taken over the blogosphere. Having this GIF on your website means that you are a blog worth taking seriously.

[MP3]
Chromeo 100% (Mercurius FM Tenderoni Vinyl Only Mix)

SymbolOne is the best band you haven’t heard of yet.
I think their music is as satisfying as Justice, travels a complete journey like a Daft Punk song, and has the pop appeal of Chromeo jams.

Their song ‘Everything Louder Then Everything Else’ will probably end up being one of my top songs of 2007. It reminds me of the Van She remix of “Gravity’s Rainbow” by the Klaxons, but better.

MP3: Symbol One – Everything Louder Then Everything Else [You MUST DL this song] [As highly rec'cd as it gets!]
MP3: SymbolOne – Love Juice

Their limited edition vinyl is coming soon. The EP will be A side “Everything louder then, everything else” + one more song, and the B side will have 2 remixes. We’ll post buying information when it becomes available.
