Yall are probably more familiar with CSS's lead singer LOVEFOXXX, or maybe even just the 1 kreepy moustached man in their band. However 2day, I couldn't help but notice an interesting tat on the guitarist from CSS (a.k.a. "Ana Rezende"). [photo via recovering on flickr]
<3 TIGER tats <3 <3 animal tats <3 <3 tattoos that have the 'temporary tattoo for kidz' aesthetic <3 <3 saving the rain forest initiatives before the general term 'global warming' became a better buzzPhrase to rally around <3
Should "Ana Rezende" change her name kind of like LOVEFOXXX to take her personal brand to the next level? Should every1 have a stage name, kind of like Brazilian soccer players?
Tattoos give people an opportunity 2 prove that they are an authentic fan of something. For example, here is a tattoo that proves some1 is an authentic fan of the Presets. [via Modblog] I never knew an electro-anthem could be converted into a post-emo-meaningful-core tatty. If I were that dude, I probably would have made sure that my tattoo was referencing the LIFELIKE Remix of "This Boy's In Love" [download] and not the regular version.
I was thinking that a lot of the 'Alice Glass/Uffie/Aggy crushin-on' got kind of b0ring, particularly for my non-altBro readership, so I thought I should look for a handsome altPro to develop a crush on.
Should I start 2 <3 Johnny Jewel from Glass Candy?
Should I grab a cup of coffee with James Murphy (lead singer of the LCD Brosystem).
Should I travel to Tibet with Girl Talk and grow a mashuppy beard?
Should I date an AZN?
Should I date a strong-minded, heavie-set girl and pretend she is a guy?
Should I try 2 seduce a member of 'THE RAPTURE'?
Maybe I'll just settledown with a masked DJ. I went 2 a palm reader once, and she told me that my future wuz dark.
I'll try 2 find an older man who truly loves me, and writes songs about me 'crashing in2 him.'
How about the guy with the kreepie moustache from CSS?
N e 1 from this band would be at the top of n e true alt's wish list. Ryte?
Hopefully I can be humble & meaningful and chill with the lead singer of Grizzly Bear and that Final Fantasy violin guy. They seem 'smarter than the typical dbag in an AltBand', so maybe we'll have meaningful late nite convos.
There are just s00 many hott altMen out there. Not sure what to do. Sux that girls like Natalie Portman get the best 1s. SRSLY tho...who is the hottest male Alternative Celebrity? Will I ever find 'tru luv'?
Have yall noticed the lead singer of CSS (Also Known as Lovefoxxx ) getting all ZANED out at music festivals recently?
[KatbeatFLICKR]
Will she be able to top Bjork's zany, artistic, innovative, & conceptually meaningfully artistic-core-core personal brand? Lovefoxxx is s0 zany/conceptual
I miss the old days when CSS used to look like regular rich-kids-from-Brazil-pretending-to-be-street-urchins. :-( I used to be able to identify with them.
Will LOVEFOXXXXX be able to take down Bjork as alt-music's #1 'weirdo diva'?
Have yall heard that theory about how people from Iceland would be put into 'special ed' if they went to school in America? Apparently, they are so creative that traditional educational systems can't handle their talents, so they just place them with kids with learning disabilities.
Unfortunately, most 'indie music fans/consumers' don't rlly 'get' Icelandic people, or only pretend to 'get' them by taking them seriously/meaningfully. Sigur Ros was kind of meaningful when u 'realized that music didn't have 2 have lyrics 2 b meaningful', but their latest stuff has been a lil bit 'too weirdo' 4 me. I'd rather support Americans, so when it comes to concept-core music, I purchase Animal Collective.
I think I have commented on how CSS look and sound like dirty, kute street kidz. However, Electrorash just posted this Midnight Juggies remix of 'Left Behind', and I think that CSS sounds cleaner & more American (less foreign) than ever.
Hopefully they can crossover x 10000 with their clean, approachable sound.
Does any one know CSS's backstory? Are they from the Brazilian favelas (AKA Shanty Towns) that inspired the movie "CITY OF GOD"? Remember when bros and altbros united around "City of God" because it had kids with guns/violence, and was rlly cool & edgy in a Grand Theft Auto-y kind of way? Or are they rich kids who are living the alt dream, kind of like The Strokes? Do u know any rich kids whose parents buy them studio time for their crappy band?
Men and women are important contributors towards the creation of modern alt-ish music. Now, more than ever, we are able to put aside stereotypes of women being incompetent, and men being the source of all that is good. We can appreciate bands for who they are, no matter if they consist of male members, female members, or any mix of both.
Mixed gendered bands are pretty interesting from a consumer perspective. Would it be fair to assume that 'a band with both male and female members' has the best chance of appealing to a broader audience of male and female fans? Is the Arcade Fire more approachable because they have women in their band? I'd say that a band is not truly a MIXED GENDER BAND when there is a female lead singer who pretends to play tamborine sometimes. It would be kind of like this live Scarlett Johansson performance of a cover from her latest album.
(Pretty awkward/worthless/I am not interested in finding out that she has a personality and is creative.)
I think when it comes to 'popular music', most people think of women as only singers. Sometimes female pop stars claim to be writers, but then they end up writing a song like Britney Spears' "Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." In the latest crop of alternative music, I think there's probably one of the strongest economies of women-who-are-actually-talented-and-applying-their-musical-skills-to-create-good-music.
How do you feel about women in music? Remember when Paul McCartney's wife was in Wings, but every one knew she didn't really do that much? Are we breaking away from that stereotype?
Here's a few blurbz about mixed gendered bands.
****CSS****
Sometimes I wonder how much I actively like the band CSS, or if I just like a few of their songs. I know "Let's Make Love And Listen to Death From Above" is as catchy as it gets, and they also have the most viewed video in the history of youtube, "Music is My Hot Hot Sex." I wonder if I would be creeped out if a dude was the one who wanted to 'make love and listen to DFA.'
CSS were pioneers when it came to branding the 'cute, exotic, yet kind of dirty looking' female.

Maybe deep down inside of me, I enjoy Glass Candy because Johnny Jewel and Ida No remind me of a mom-and-dad type of relationship.

The New Young Pony Club has a female majority. I wonder if there is one dude who is the brains behind it. Does any one know what this band is up to? I feel like I deserve a New Young Pony Club remix per month, just since their music is so approachable and/or remixable.

The Go Team has a handful of women. Do you think that there should be a limit on how many members can be in a 'band'? Did you like any other songs other than "Huddle Formation"? I feel like mixed gendered bands are guaranteed one pretty catchy hit, but they can also be doomed to 'be that band that only has one song that I listen to a lot.'
********
Teenagers in Tokyo is a majority-female group.
I feel like their song "Very Vampyr" might have perfected the genre of cute-dancey-thrash-chant rock.
When I see mixed-gendered indie bands, I wonder if there is one male who 'basically writes most of the songs.' I think an advantage of being a mixed gender bands is that if your female members are cute enough, you have a better chance of turning a mediocre, some-what annoying song into a cute dancey pop song.
I used to think Le Tigre was a mixed gender band. Is it fair to assume that bands that are 100% female have a smaller chance of appealing to men than bands that are 100% male appealing to women? More girls are probably willing to love Interpol or DMB than there are guys willing to love to Electrelane or Le Tigre.
Bands like Coldplay and U2 prove that all-male bands will always be the biggest bands in the world. However, bands like Fleetwood Mac and Sonic Youth prove that mixed gendered bands are great for getting fans to truly identify with and genuinely love your band's catalog of work.
Overall, women are valuable members of modern alternative bloghouse indie post-dance rock music. It's a good time to be a music fan. We even live in a world where people are allowed to convince themselves that Uffie has a unique, valuable rap style.
How do you feel about women? Is their place still in the kitchen?
Are mixed gendered bands better than all-female or all-male bands?
Are there any women producers who make bangers that I need to know about?
After finding out that one of the next Teenagers "Love No" remixes is by Delorean, I decided to check them out (Remixes are important marketing and awareness strategies in the modern music industry).
Delorean sounds pretty complete. A lot of their stuff is from 2006, and I guess the electroblog/dance market wasn't booming back then (except being blogged about in 2006 by fluokids). But I'd say they deserve more BLOGLOVE than a lot of stuff that's circulating in the past few months.
I think they offer something a little bit more complex for people who are into CSS/the Go Team.
Delorean will be at SXSW. They are from Spain (not France or Australia).
Check out this ZUNE COMMERCIAL with The Shins. (In case you didn't know, the Zune is Microsoft's version of the iPod. Don't feel unhip if you don't know about it. If one of your friends has one, it's probably because it came for free with a Dell laptop or something). [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5QiqbHp5Q8&rel=1] Do you think the Shin's Manager/Label should have let them be associated with the Zune? In a world where iTunes downloads are more important than radio plays (at least in markets that aren't filled with degenerates), it's interesting to see that the Shins are chilling in a ZUNE commercial, as opposed to be featured in an AD like this:
Also factor in the whole 'Feist' iPod Nano phenomenon, and it's fair to say that Apple has done a pretty decent job of letting mainstreamers know what should be on their iPod.
Computers are our friends. We use websites like eHarmony and Match.com to find love and passion, Myspace to enhance friendships, and blogs to find fresh music. Thanks computers!
This post is about the new world. Did Al Gore invent the internet?
I think a lot of covers of Kraftwerk's song "Computer Love" aren't that memorable/ are pretty pointless. Glass Candy did a pretty solid cover, probably my fave.
I also enjoy Cansei de Ser Sexy's "Computer Heat," which is definitely a party starter, and an easy way to let people know that you've heard more CSS than the standard "Let's Make Love And Listen to Death From Above."
