Thieves Like Us–Kinda Authentic?

You might remember the band THIEVES LIKE US from one of the most popular bloghaus remix contests of all time for the hit song “Drugs in My Body.“

You might also remember them from one of the most popular promotional GIFs of all time which promoted the remix contest.

I am drawn into Thieves Like Us because they have a brand that is cryptic, meaningful, modern, direct, and appeals to ‘alts-who-perceive-themselves-as-authentic.’ I think their video for “Drugs in My Body” makes me yearn to identify with their aesthetic. I want to live in ‘the city’ & have meaningful and/or beautiful relationships/interactions/events/tragedies.

N e ways…their new song/EP called “Your Heart Feels” aligns perfectly with their cryptically meaningful brand. Part of me is tempted to say that their vocal delivery sounds shitty, but the fact that it is different from traditional deliveries makes me feel a little bit more authentic for appreciating it.

Based on what I’ve heard, they seem to have non-traditional/lofi-ish production techniques, which increases their authenticity level by 10-20%.

The song is a great song about getting vulnerable with some1 u allowed urself to truly luv.

Most of the THIEVES LIKE US remixes of ‘Drugs in my Body’ got a little bit too gothy or late90s electronicky for me. Find some remixes at Panda Toes, MissingToof , or Disco Workout.
Luckily, Party Time 2000’s sound does well to separate itself from the pack of “Drugs in My Body” remixes.

Party Time 2000 really does a good job to maintain the complex tone of the original track, but also GLAMMING it up for a high class night.

Public Service Announcements Are Obsolete

Whenever I watch TV that’s aimed at my target market, I always end up viewing commercials with some black quirky-looking guy from thetruth.com who is trying to embody Generation Y’s inner-righteousness. It reminds me of those anti-marijuana ads from a few years ago. One where a little girl is run over by a group of high teenagers looking to satisfy their ‘munchies.’ Or that one where those kids get high and one shoots the other one.

What kind of music do you think he listens to?

Finding the right tone to approach Generation Y about ‘relevant social issues’ is tough, but here are some bloggable examples from the past.

I could go for something along the lines of this angsty interaction between child and parent from 1987.

Even better is this PSA from 1991 that identifies a demographic (African Americans), and uses historical information to make them feel shame about life choices (using drugs).

Remix Contests Are an Important Marketing Strategy for Modern Record Labels

I’m looking forward to the day where we’re tired of seeing so many remix contest GIFs in the sidebars of blogs. We can all complain about there being so many remixes of songs that were already close to perfect in their original form. (Some people might already feel this way.)

Remix Contests force the bloggers to blog about the band atleast 2.5 times. It’s a good situation because remixes are helpful for all parties involved, even the blog.
