Sometimes Product Packaging is More Important Than the Actual Product

As yall know, I am an alternative businessman with relevant opinions on how to set up a successful alternative business. If u come to my blog offices for a consulting session, I will teach u how to turn 10 Am Appy t-shirts and a permanent marker into a thriving alternative business.

Today's Alt Biz Lesson is about product packaging. What yall need 2 realize is that product packaging represents your product. Sometimes even more than ur actual product. Even though 'Am Appy' is 'just a t-shirt', the way that the colourful product sits in a meaningful clear bag with names of relevant cities printed on it does a better job of branding. In this picture, you can see proud entry level alts who are proud of their recent purchases at the popular international boutique "The American Appy." The opportunity to walk around the city with a branded bag gives the entrylevelers a chance to show other consumers what 'people who look interesting and culturally connected' are purchasing.

I know yall don't realize this, but when u walk with this bag, u r a 'walking billboard', kind of like a bus with an advertisement, or one of those portable billboard thingies.

I guess what I'm trying 2 say is that yall need 2 b aware of the world around u.
Understand that product packaging can inspire consumers to rally behind ur product's brand.

Should I use my Abercrombie bag as my backpack when I go back to High School to get my G.E.D.?

Should I be proud of my Forever21 bag?

Is it still authentic to brand yourself with The Gap?

I <3ed my macbook packaging so much that I use it on a daily basis as a purse/laptop bag so that people nvr 4get that I'm a Mac user.

When I grow up, I will only live in a city that has been listed on an Am Appy bag.

What's yalls favourite bag 2 walk around with?

If you were THE GAP, would you pick Amy Poehler to represent you?

When it comes to the minimal SNL that most people are exposed to these days, I think it's fair to say Amy Poehler leaves the viewer thinking:
1. I used to complain about Weekend Update when Collin Quinn hosted it, but this POEHLER crap is terrible.
2. We can all accept that most women (and most women on SNL) are not funny, and just there to sing (Ana Gastayer+Maya Rudolph model) or be a notch below awkwardly normal (Rachel Dratch), but Amy Poehler's aura really just ruins anything.

I guess what I'm trying to say is:
GAP should have taken pictures of AA-type hottiez, instead of a 'funnie faced' Amy Poehler.
American Apparel advertising: The only advertising that reaches out to Gen-Y on a personal level. <3 <3 <3

Speaking of THE GAP, I found a link to this leaked commercial set to launch in 2008. I heard 2008 is the year of the KHAKI.

GAP pusses out on their sweet new logo bc ppl on the internet made fun of them

Recently, the popular American retailer THE GAP 'rebranded' with a sweet new Helvetica logo [link]. Basically just opened up photo shop, made a lil box, used the 'fade' tool, then wrote "Gap" in Helvetica font. Pretty chill with me. Nothing wrong with Helvetty.

Then a bunch of ppl on the internet made fun of them because it was such a 'lame' logo. Anyways, it seems like The GAP reverted to their old logo just because their new logo was a trending topic on twitter. Do u think the GAP was 'cyberbullied' into changing their logo? Should they have believed in their identity?

STATEMENT FROM MARKA HANSEN PRESIDENT OF GAP BRAND NORTH AMERICA
“Since we rolled out an updated version of our logo last week on our website, we’ve seen an outpouring of comments from customers and the online community in support of the iconic blue box logo.

“Last week, we moved to address the feedback and began exploring how we could tap into all of the passion. Ultimately, we’ve learned just how much energy there is around our brand. All roads were leading us back to the blue box, so we’ve made the decision not to use the new logo on gap.com any further.

“At Gap brand, our customers have always come first. We’ve been listening to and watching all of the comments this past week. We heard them say over and over again they are passionate about our blue box logo, and they want it back. So we’ve made the decision to do just that – we will bring it back across all channels.

Kinda unchill. Seems like they shoulda made a logo that they believed in, and stuck with it. Wish they understood that when it came to branding/user-experience, the customer isn't always right. It is the brand's responsibility to curate a modern experience for their customers.

Maybe they are just trying to 'milk the meme' or something to get more 'advertising on blogs.'
Do yall think that the Gap is 'mad lame'?

Here is the rest of the press release where they 'totally puss out' and say 'we should have consulted yall with some sort of facebook voting system or something. Sorrie, but glad yall <3 our old logo.'

“In the meantime, the website will go back to our iconic blue box logo and, for Holiday, we’ll turn our blue box red for our seasonal campaign.

“We’ve learned a lot in this process. And we are clear that we did not go about this in the right way. We recognize that we missed the opportunity to engage with the online community. This wasn’t the right project at the right time for crowd sourcing.

“There may be a time to evolve our logo, but if and when that time comes, we’ll handle it in a different way. “

Do brands take 'random ppl on the internet too seriously'?
Was the Gap Helvetica logo really 'a failure' or is it just as forgettable as the old/new Gap logo?
Should brands ever re-brand?
Should all brands consult with relevant bloggers/super users before morphing their identity so that there isn't an 'internet uproar' abt their new logo?
Is The Gap logo the ultimate 'logo failure meme'?
Should the Harvard School of Biz write a Biz Case abt the Gap logo, and how this whole fiasco has no impact on sales?

R u gonna miss the 'new, old' The Gap logo?

The Gap rebrands with Helvetica font 2 look more like Am Appy

So confused about the state of retailers in the modern world. Keep hearing rumors abt Am Appy going under, so I am not sure why The Gap would want to copy their logo, utilizing the popular font 'Helvetica' to represent their corporate brand identity. It seems like a minimal logo, just relying on 'a famous font' to carry ur brand and inspire mad sales. Does n e 1 know why so many brands use 'Helvetica' font? Is Helvetty still relevant? Does it resonate with consumers? Do u wish relevant graphic designers came up with a new, alt, authentic font? Did Jeff Helvetica 'crush it'/'kill it' when he designed Helvetty? R u more of an Arial/Cosmic Sands type of bro? Feel like the GAP might start using sexy, risque ads, or something. Part of me wonders if the future of the Am App aesthetic is headed towards The Gap aesthetic, and if The Gap is headed towards AmApp.

Is it weird how brands evolve to try to retain customers, instead of just letting them find a new brand that sells clothes that fit their personal branding/career needs + evolving body types? Is The Gap for 'Fat People'? Is GAP unchill because they don't have a factory in America where they pay legalized workers above market wages? What is ur perception of the GAP/people who shop there/people who work there? What brands do u even like any more? Will a Helvetty logo make u <3 the Gap more than evr? Should American Apparel 'sue the fuck' out of The Gap? Should Target 'sue the fuck' out of Am Appy? Should Am Airlies 'sue the fuck' out of Target? Should [brand that has Helvetty logo] sue the eff out of [brand that has Helvetty] logo? Is Helvetica still authentic, or has it finally 'gone mainstream'? What are some new alt fonts that are chill/more authentic than Helvetica? Do u shop at The Gap? Is 'retail shopping' 4 lamestreamers?
