Should tweens and entry level alts boycott Girl Talk live performances because they are not ‘green’ enough?
PHOTOS BY CLARISSA ROUDABUSH VIA freewilliamsburg

As you know, I have refrained from blogging about the Girl Talk live experience because of his increasing levels of inauthenticity. However, I noticed a lot of terrible things happening at his show that have to do with one of my biggest passions--'going green.' For those of you who don't know, the phrase 'going green' relates to 'doing shit that will help 2 save our environment and keep humans around 4ever.' As u can see, Girl Talk's show is not very 'green.' Not sure what the opposite of 'going green' is.

It seems like the Girl Talk is a 'celebration of waste', like they are just converting a local park into a 'huge fucking dumpster.'

Not sure if toilet paper shooting technology really enhances the live music experience. Most bands I have seen did not construct 'waste machines' that fling paper into the air--instead they focus on making authentic indie rock.

People even find a way to use the wasted toilet paper as 'temporary clothes', then they probs 'wiped their metaphorical asses' b4 throwing it on the ground.

Probably is some sort of 'status symbol' at Girl Talk shows, much like mainstream kids are 'proud of their Abercrombie', alts at GT shows are 'proud that the Lord delivered them some toilet paper'

Photos like this make me 100% certain that the ice caps will melt, and the oceans will flood 90% of the land on Earth during my lifetime.

If I had some tweenage kids, I probably wouldn't let them attend a Girl Talk show. Not only are there structural dangers when it comes to '200 kids crashing a temporary stage', but also it seems like a 'big ass' 'tweenage fuckfest.'

Seems really unchill. Worried that there are 'altbro predators' there.

Ultimately, I am enraged that Girl Talk promotes such waste. We are trying to save the environment, but it seems like his live show figures that if 'shit gets crazy', then it is worth it. The concept of 'toilet paper' is wasteful, as is the act of 'shooting that shit into the air on top of a sea of alts.'

Ultimately, I am sad that Jaime, the latino man who works as a foreman for the Parks and Recreation Department will have to clean up the mess.

Put litter in its place.
Support GREEN artists.
Save the Environment.
Save Jaime.

Feeling sad in a celebration of waste.

Which prop will make a music festival the most meaningful?

It's kinda hard for music festivals to 'compete' these days. All of them are basically the same, and most of them book the same acts. Music festivals must find effective gimmicks to make consumers feel like they are experiencing an inimitable event, available nowhere else in the universe. Also must make the festival 'look sweet' in pictures so that people who look at pictures think 'wish i could be there... looks totes fun.'

Do u have any solid ideas for what makes a festival 'appear 2 be' hella 'fun'?
Which of these gimmicks 'makes' a music festival better?

Should music festivals go to Home Depot to buy leaf blowers in order to make more 'toilet paper' shooters?

Photos via cobrasnatch

Releasing 'beach balls' to simulate a coastal environment?

Booking a college-themed partie DJ?

Releasing an 'inflatable heart' to represent 'the human spirit'?

Having a 'cityscape' as 'the backdrop' ur music festival [via meaningful setting]?

Would 'free weed' make music fests better?

Have moms of kids who are at the festival host a 'bake sale' to make people feel younger & let moms feel like they are a part of their alternative child's life?

Building a rollercoaster that goes over the mainstage?

Constructing a huge slip n slide for people to 'fuck' and 'grind' on?

Really just want to attend 'the perfect music festival.'

Please share your creative ideas, and other stuff that would make a music festival seem 'hella cool.' Every business is struggling to survive, and business entities must get back in touch with consumers if they want to stay around forever [via govt bailout].

What makes a music festival 'meaningful' 2 u?
If u had millions of dollars to throw a music festival, how would yall 'throw it down'?

Just read on some magazine's website that Girl Talk is the 55th most Creative Person in Business
Meme via FastCompany

Have yall heard about this post-modern rock star? He seems pretty chill. Might download his album or something... but srsly yall. It's weird how Girl Talk's brand is still being consumed by mainstreamers. Like they are discovering some 'gem' or something. I guess what we have learned is that Girl Talk does nothing too special as a DJ, but his brand is strong and identifiable--he is white, used to have a 'real job', and represents our inner-whitebro having a good time, partying & becoming the person we want 2 be. I guess that makes him 'creative' or something. Wonder how much he charges for a DJ gig. Glad I was into him 'before he was too famous' [via "I'm a PC" ad]

Also saw that Damien Hirst was on this list.

Not really familiar with any artist other than Andy Warhol, so I read up on this bro. Apparently he sells are for 'a shit load of money' even though it is stupid. He apparently sold some gold shark or something for $1 million. He is apparently going to sell his cadaver after he dies to make some 'art.' Seems authentic/like a gimmick/like a dream job. Damn. Feel jealous. Can't believe these creative people get paid for their passion, but I don't get paid for what I love to do.

Is it still alt to deify Marc Jacobs? Wish people turned their backs on fashion designers like they do on bands.

Not sure how I feel about this list of creative people. I think Tyra Banks is on it. So is the guy who shoots the Sartorialist. So is the guy who designed the iPod/iPhone. Glad he got #1.

It's weird when 'magazines' build these intense, deep lists of people who are influential. It's like they take 1 person from every niche of the cool aspects of society that are covered by blogs. Think it might be some sort of scheme to get 'mad hits.' Tech bros + movie bros + design bros + music bros + government bros + female bros + African American bros + fashion bros + ______ bros. Important 2 pick diverse lists. Think that this list is 'sponsored by HP' and some HP bro is on their list. Might be a scam. Might need to destroy my Hewlett Packard desktop/Photo+printer+scanner.

Yall. Saw this picture of some bro. Thought he looked a lot like 1 of my favourite DJs...

Hints:

  • He is not AZN.
  • He wasn't on That 70's Show
  • He seems like a chill bro
  • He invented 'mashups.'
  • His favourite baseball team is the Pittsburgh Phillies.
  • He will play 'crunk-ass' parties on college campuses for the next 4-30 years.
  • He 'stole' Radiohead's 'pay what u want' model 4 his most recent album
  • Ppl who 'still see him' are usually under the age of 19 / 16 / 8.
  • He's a "P.C."
  • He starred in the film Honey I Shrunk the Kidz, yall!
  • He works in a factory that creates 'Free AOL' cds.
  • Pitchfork gave his latest mixtape a 100 stars
  • he has a party picture website that gets 1million hits per day

Which mnstrm broad will be 'big in 2k9'?

Yall.
Kinda tired of 'alt shit.' I need 2 ask questions that appeal 2 more people.

Who do yall think will be 'big in 2k9'? Kinda like a girl that 'every1 wants 2 tug 2.' Yall know what I mean.

I have a feeling that Natalie Portman might 'get famous' in 2k9. She was in popular movies like the Garden States, and I think she played Keanu Reeves' lovemate in The Matrix.

Another up and coming singer is the Katy Perrys. This is a picture of her before she 'rebranded' into a semi-attainable moderately alt broad with 'breasts that u can make love to.' This makes her attractive to men without isolating her from female markets.

I have also heard of this new mainstream band called Lady Gaga. She seems like she is taking 'electro' to the mainstream. She seems really unique, fashionable, and talented. Think she really 'gets' what life/dance music is all about.

I am not sure if I like her zany personal brand, or if she should have stuck with her 'Sexie New Jerseyian' brand.

Another person who I think will be big in 2k9 is The Jessica Simpsons. She used to be a reality star, but now she is starting to sing country music. She has a beautiful voice and is very talented. She invented 'mom jeans' in the early 00s.

Another band 2 watch is The Girl Talks. Now that they have officially 'become popular' and 'mainstream', we have 2 see if they are going to slip down in2 a spiral of ___________. R yall worried? What happens to ex-authentic alts when they become commoditized + mainstream?

Another band 2 watch is The Ches. They are a communist anti-establishment rock group. They sing about ideas like 'communism' and 'fascism' and 'hipsterism' and 'war' and 'death' and other stuff that sounds like Linkin Park.

N e ways... just wanted 2 let yall know what's going on in 'mainstream world' since sometimes we forget that there's all of these other people out there who like stuff that's less interesting than 'us.'

h8 mainstreamers, but u kinda have 2 follow it a little bit so that you make sure that you're still alt, and not 'becoming one of them.'

Who do yall think will be big/go mainstream in 2k9? What do yall know about these bands/acts/people that I don't know about? Need yalls help so that I can keep my blog 'modern.'

i tried a little, and it tasted funny, but i loved it
when i was entry level, had my first tight pair of BDG jeans, a cool shirt designed by a local artist, and my first palistinian scarf (it was blue guys), i began to learn to love sparks
it was 2k7
i was entry
i was dancing to MIA
i just learned about a cool band called justice
i rid my first fixed gear bike
i  was developing my personal brand
and through it all.... sparks was there
sparks was there when i first heard mainstream people talking about MIA
sparks was there when agyness was no long single
sparks was there when my high school friends made fun of my "new look"
sparks was there when MIA "retired"
sparks was there for the good times as well though

at least now,
as an altbro growing into the altbag i'll be in 2k9,
and I put down the Palestinian scarf because it’s “played out” and pick up my circle scarf
and shave my post-ironic mustache because I’ve grown out of it
and nostalgically listen to IN RAINBOWS
and smile at the future alt bros as they walk around campus
i can say i was there
sparks was a part of my alt experience
now i suppose j00se will be good enough for me right now
but in the future, when i'm a post altbag twenty something

GIRL TALK: WILL HE BE FORCED TO CHANGE HIS NAME?

In 2009, I will break more news stories and turn into an investigative reporting blog. I recently uncovered an exclusive story within the memesphere. I was searching through old video archives to see how pre-internet pop culture influenced today's artists and their aesthetic gimmicks.

I was watching this clip of Full House where Stephanie Tanner starts a band with Kimmy Gibbler and they play an Ace of Base Cover [via "I Saw the Sign"].

</embed>

and I noticed something kinda weird about the name of their band...

THE GIRL TALKS--just like Greg Gillis.
This is the kind of reporting that Pitchfork, the Stereogums, and the Daily Swarm need 2 b doing yall. I am just a meme blog. I'm not ready 2 accidentally find out that I've been lied 2 my whole alternative life.

If I had know that the Girl Talks had stolen their name from Girl Talk, a tween Ace of Base coverband, would I still be a 'fan'? I don't know the answer 2 that question.

Just h8 being lied 2. Will probz stop blggng abt the Girl Talks now. Feel like my parents told me I was adopted or something.

Do u check the hypemachine more than u check myspace/fb? Does that make u authentic/ an authentic music fan?

Or is a better picture that captures the essence of altBro 2 altBros who brought overt indicators of having merged their personal brands with Girl Talk AT a Girl Talk concert?

Are Mashups 'art'? Does something automatically become 'not art' after 2 many inauthentic people like it? (a.k.a. the HRO in 2k9 theory)

Can some1 build a timeline that documents the mainstreamization of Girl Talk so that we can study how things go from 'authentic buzzworthy viral' to 'maltsream' to 'mnstrm' to 'xx(main)streme)' [a mix of X-treme+Mainstream].

We need to come together and find one solution for each problem that humans have. (This is what Barry Obama will do. He will implement a national dress code.)

New HRO Gimmick: Reporting that Bands Have Changed Their Names

Just thought I might beta test a new HRO gimmick. After blogging about MATT AND KIM and getting an unreasonable amount of feedback, it's easy to tell that they are 'what's big after the meaningfulcore bubble' bursts. They are certainly a bit meaningful, but definitely more 'fun.' People tend to want more fun when the world is in crisis (kinda like our financial economie thingy).

Matt and Kim are two smiley individuals. I'm rlly excited that they are changing their names.

I feel like the video for "yeah yeah" aka 'ya ya' aka "yea yea" aka "yes, yes" aka "uh huh yea" is probably one of the shit-eatingest grinniest in the world.

</embed>

[WATCH OUT FOR THE PIZZA ALTS]
Did u know that shiteatinggrinning is contagious, kinda like yawning.

The truth is that Matt&Kim is an old product that angel investor FrankBro Chan of IHeartCommies invested in. Now I think he sold them to a bigger rcrd lbl for a fleet of ice cream trucks.

The reason Matt And Kim will achieve relative mainstream success is bc of their live product. Entrylevel alts will be eager to 'see a memorable live performance', kinda like a girl talk concert. If you tour extensively AND have a decent enough gimmick, you have a great chance of 'making it.' It also helps if ur a mix-gendered band & if people are 'allowed 2 get krazie' at ur concert. Bands of unmemorable altBros who are 'kinda talented' but have no distinguishing gimimick will not 'make it' no matter how hard they tour.

Speaking of GurleTalk, seen n e g00d concert reviews lately? Is this recap authentic? Is Pitchfork going to switch all of their reviews to vlog format?

In our modern world, whenever a female artist crowd surfs, any even is automatically renamed GRABFEST _K_ (depending on the date). Put urself in the shoes of a bro, or even an altBro... would U 'have a lil grab' if u had the chance?

It's difficult for any male to resist the temptation of 'sticking a finger or two' up some one's '_____.' This is why there are s0 many bros with 'shit eating grins' in the kute pic of Uffie above. If u were a girl, would u crowd surf?

Is Sufjan Stevens beautiful on the inside and out? [Man Crushin]

Yall. I remember a year or two ago when girls thought Sufjan Stevens songs made their lives' more meaningful. That was back when every1 was an 'entry level alt' because the essence of alt wasn't very definitive. Back then, experimenting with altdom was like a blind person trying to feel his way through a busy city. No1 was really willing to accept that they were searching for 'an authentic way of life'/didn't know how to accept that. Glad it's finally 2k8.75,yall.

I know that I 'crush' on a lot of female alt celebs, so I just wanted to know if Sufjan is hot/authentic. When he made the theme song for Little Miss Sunshine about traveling 2 Chicago, it was like he was the best thing since Ratatat. But now his personal brand might have gotten 'a little bit too meaningful' so he has kinda isolated the 'trendy' demographic, which I take kinda personally.

Did yall listen to Sufjan b4 u started listening 2 electroblogcore?

BUT SRSLY... What's up with the new Microsoft ads about being proud of being a PC? Can 1 marketing campaign really re-invent the personal brands of millions of people?

Girl Talk: does he need to get a personal branding manager that will help him take his image to the next level? I feel like he should be 80% more 'douchebaggy' and 60% less 'trying to justify his artistic craft.' He could still try to be 'creatively authentic' and talk about it all the time, but we should have the option of 'not taking him seriously' if we don't want to.

I would prefer it if he was just the usual neon wayfarers, headband/hoodie DBagDJ, instead of utilizing the 'homeless DJ' look. He should probably also experiment with the 'Steve Aoki Dim Mak Shuttershades' model where he wears his own merchandise all of the time, creating a demand for it amongst entry-level alts.

Lollapalooza: Alt-nited We Stand

I don't rlly know who exactly played Lollapalooza, but I did look at some pictures of it on some online website. It looks like it may or may not have been 'memorable' and/or 'meaningful.'

Mainstreamers+festivalBros got rlly mad at alts for 'taking over the scene' and attracting 'a bunch of artists that no1 has even heard of.'

I'm just glad the alts handled themselves with grace and post-post-ironically giggled it off. They also came prepared with headbands and bandanas to wipe up any excess blood.

Kid Sister, also known as Hillary Banks 2.0, looks to have played at the festival. I'm glad she got all dolled up 4 it, instead of treating it like 'a bunch of nobodies from Milwaukee.'

It seems like festival security was kind of lacking. Some old lady wandered up on to stage after taking too many of her meds. She was in a pair of golden granny panties.

Remember 'band photography'? R.I.P. He should trade in that lens, and invest in a Canon Party Pic 3000 lens.

I wish I could be young again and know what it means to appreciate modern culture for all of the right reasons. (I wish my parents had the money to encourage me to appreciate the arts when I was a kid. Do u think they got dropped off, or was a parent stuck there in the Dance tent watching bloghouse DJS?)

Lollapalooza set attendance records because there happened to be a MAINSTREAMALTBRO Convention going on in the ballroom of a nearby Holiday Inn.

I've been into satire/sarcasm-based humor ever since I could talk. It's great when I know I can relate to my fave alt-celebs because they are on 'the same level' as me when it comes to 'how we joke around with our BFFs.' It's a breath of fresh air to know that as an alt, the people I admire are on the same 'intellectual level' as me when it comes to humor/life/philosophy/women's rights/racism/favourite character on shows like the Office, Arrested Development, and other shows that are sold in Seasonal DVD Formats for People to watch in Groups and Bond.

Here's a few videos of alt celebs gettin 'quirky'

1. Girl Talk gets sillie when he talks about marginally talented video editors 'mashing up' music videos to go along with his fun lil songs.

[GT coverage by the Butter Team]

2. The Guy with the big head from Deathcab for Cutie made a video that was intended to go 'alternative viral', and really did a good job of showing us that he has a 'lighter side' and 'doesn't just make music--he has other ideas when it comes to film and mockumentary-ish OFFICE type of humor.'

3. Here's another funnie video that was underwritten by MTV to take Death Cab's 'meaningful core' brand to the next level by adding a layer of identifiable quirkiness to them. S000 sillie/rand0m. WHERE DO THEY COME UP WITH THIS GOLD? MY BL0G NEEDS SOME BRIGHT COLOURS+RETRO AESTHETICS + NAPPY DYNAMITE-ISH HUMOR.

4. I like watching videos of my fave alt celebs 'goin wild' on camera. Here is Spank Rock doing a keg stand. hehe. 'Alt Celebs Gone Wild.' This guy should probs set a better example for the kids.

But SRSLY...what do yall think of THE OFFICE / humor that people think elevates them to a higher plane of ________?

Why can't we go back to the days of the MOCKUMENTARY when we could just be ourselves?
Is 'The Office' alt or mainstream? Do yall watch TV? Does n e 1 that I would respect know the answers to these questions?

g2g watch an entire season of 'Lost.' TTYouAllGuysLater.

My Relationship with Girl Talk

I'll never forget the first time I heard Girl Talk. One of my altest bros sent me the CD. He couldn't believe I hadn't heard Girl Talk yet. He was like "U HAVEN'T HEARD NIGHT RIPPER? IT'S FCKNG AMAZING, BRAH?" We had a party to attend later that night, and instead of pre-partying with faggie electro, we decided to hear some wacky mashups. I saw my alt-bro's eyes light up as he exclaimed, "OMG. Is that James Taylor? This R0X0RZ!"

[This picture represents Girl Talk becoming comfortable in his own shoes as one of the world's top alternative celebrities.]

This blog post is intended to confront the issue: "IS GIRL TALK MAINSTREAM OR ALT?" I think he's one of the most difficult alt-artists to decide whether or not you are supposed to like because:

  • He doesn't 'make' his own music
  • He looks like a mainstreamer gone alt
  • His shows are no longer enjoyable because of the seas of tweens dressed in neon, & frat bros on their annual 'alt night'
  • DJs are easy to resent
  • so many people who know too much about music enjoy him too much
  • so many uninteresting people think they are interesting bc they like him.

GIRL TALK has entered the genre of 'music that uninteresting people like in order to seem more interesting.' He has joined other top Hypemachine artists like Radiohead, Coldplay, MGMT, and whoever else has been 'popular' for the past 3 months. He has become the kind of artist who is 'acclaimed' no matter what he does, so it doesn't even really matter whether or not his product is good any more. It will always be bloggable/magazine blurbable, and it will always be somewhere around decent, but since he has the most justified brand of 'mashups', he will be able to get away with it even though most people will say 'mashups R DEAD.'

When Girl Talk comes to town, people will come to party. Altbros, fratbros, and creepy 30 year olds who buy 18 year olds drinks will come ready to grind. Teen alt sluts will wear their zany sunglasses for the first time at night when they get on stage with Girl Talk. Communities in the Midwest are proud that they are alternative enough to host Girl Talk concerts.

An interesting thing about Girl Talk is that alt musical historians are unwilling to concede whether he is mainstream or alt. When he first started out, he was apparently rlly conceptual. He played music that was crappy and no1 liked, and had to use gimmicks like 'getting drunk' and 'having skanky backup dancers' as he played to audiences of no1/probably weirdo goth-alt people. Gregg Gillis used 2 be 'underground', because 'underground' means that u r crappy & no1 likes u.

Then I guess he discovered what Girl Talk 2.0 was all about with MASHUPS, and was able to take advantage of the golden days of DJs back in 2007. (s000 long ago). For the rest of eternity, Diplo and Girl Talk will be the only 'DJs/laptop DJs/non-DJs' who are allowed to make mashups & not get shit 4 it. "Night Ripper" was an album made before it was intended to BLOW UP. I think that's why so many people feel comfortable with it, since there was no hype. It was more like stumbling upon a really interesting episode of Frasier that made you think about life. You would be alright without it in your life, but it's pretty okay that it came in2 your sphere of consciousness.

With added expectations, "Feed the Animals" was only going to be 'something that d-bags said they liked' or 'something that d-bags decided not to like without even listening to it.'

FEED THE ANIMALS
I didn't really listen to 'Feed the Animals.' I listened to some of the first couple of tracks, but in all honesty, it was WAAAY too black-ish for me. I felt kind of like I had accidentally bought a rap CD and then drove home from my local record store as a black man yelled at me about metaphors that only urban people and empty white suburbanites pretend to understand. I think an issue might be 'hip hop is not authentic enough any more', so GirlTalkBro had to use a bunch of the gimmicky Top40 songs that it's difficult to identify with.

Issues with FEED THE ANIMALS:

  • Track Selection wasn't ALT-enough. "GIRL TALK DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ALT PEOPLE." -Kanye West
  • There was no Justice, Teenagers, other gimmicky 'indie/electro' hits that he should have included to repay the mainstream alts who have enabled him to play to sold out shows of entry-level alts/mainstreamers/bros/bros-who-grind-on-any-piece-of-ass for the past 1.5 years.
  • TOO BLACKISH. I mean, SRSLY. I don't GET rap, and I can't identify most of the choruses/lyrics without the annoying original tracks behind them.
  • Overall, it didn't really 'get my attention' and 'suck me in' to a world that 'represented an escape' from 'how seriously I am supposed to take music.' It didn't make me 'want 2 have fun' and '4get about important things' and just 'get my dance on' and 'get my drank on' with a 'group' of my 'closest' 'friends.'

But yeah, it doesn't even really matter, bc it is a Girl Talk album, and it's art! And when a lot of people like a product like this, it's really beautiful. Our society has come a long way. It's amazing. So just chill out and be happy that we live in a world connected by wires where people can hear media like mashup albums. It's great, yall. I mean, I'm happy that I have this outlet for yall to even read what I'm thinking. Let's not focus on being disappointed by 'Feed the Animals', and just take some time to appreciate what it means 2 live in the internet age. Love yall.

Other questions/thoughts:

  • Why does HRO only 'review' mixtapes that are released as 'albums'?
  • If you were disappointed by 'Feed the Animals', you are REALLY going to hate his next album.
  • I think an interesting about Gregg Gillis is that he is 'a smart dude in a good situation.' Most alternative celebrities and real celebrities are usually idiots who got lucky and now get to display their terrible personalities for a living. Gregor Gillis
  • I think I read that Girl Talk has had a long-term girlfriend through his alt-celeb-status transition. Maybe he should dump her and get more tugjobs?
  • I read that in the future, Girl Talk is planning to make 'new songs out of old songs' as opposed to straightforward mashups. That's going to go TERRIBLY, but I think he'll be closer to his roots as a conceptual artist. Hopefully he is able to put food on the table.
  • Overall, I am extremely comfortable with Gregory Gillis not expecting me to pay for his music. It makes our relationship a lot better. I'm glad I didn't have to steal his album from him, and he is glad that I gave him $0 for his new album.
  • SRSLY though... why didn't he use more BLOG HOUSE gimmicky music? [tracklisting]

What can we learn from Gregory Gillis (AKA The Girl Talks)?
Greg Gillis has perfected the Mainstream-Alt Vortex. When you are an artist or a brand that is sucked into the mainstream-alt vortex, it is more difficult for consumers to pin you down as 'being authentic' or 'being popular'. In most circumstances, you can only be 'authentic' or 'popular.' There is no middle ground. However, an artist like GIRL TALK is constantly hovering between being considered super authentic/innovative, but at the same time a safe, popu
lar choice for people who may or may not be 'taking a risk' by liking 'something s000 random.'

This cycle makes no sense, but neither does Girl Talk.

CAN SOME1 PLZ EXPLAIN GIRL TALK? IS HE ALT OR MAINSTREAM? IS HE UNDERGROUND OR POPULAR OR AUTHENTIC OR AUTH-CORE?

Anyways, GIRL TALK is here to stay, so we might as well get used to him because one day he will be playing Fortune 500 Annual Conclaves to get employees fired up.

XX BONUS XX

Remember the time Girl Talk got a $500 Taco Bell Coupon and gave tacos away to attendees of his concert?

[Girl Talk should be hired by summer camps to make groups of kids shut up, but then get them excited.]

Remember when Greg Gillis got shut down after some college bro got tasered, and then had to rally the troops to 'find the next great party?'

[I love Girl Talk's "let me level with you, bro" voice of reason in this video]

xx BONUS GIRL TALK alt Vs. mainstream image analysis xx

S0 MAINSTREAM

Just a bro from Pittsburg makin some tunes!

I have a beard, yes! I wear a Pirates hat.

I am transitioning into my alt existence. I am feeling comfortable with more attention than ever. I am simply ready to party. I have an emerging niche market

I will sell t-shirts to mainstreamers.

I have mastered my kraft (mstrd my krft).

I have found my alternative mainstream existence. My journey is over. Consumers will pay what they want for my album. I hope Prince doesn't sue me.

I gave Girl Talk a tug job for his new album

I thought it was rlly cool that Radiohead let me pay what I wanted for their hit album 'In Rainbows.' However, I thought it was even cooler that Girl talk let me barter-what-I-wanted in exchange for his new album.

What did u give Girl Talk for his new album?
I feel like more people are likely to be guilted into thinking 'Radiohead deserves my money' moreso than 'Greg Gillis's future children deserve my money.'

I think they left off a few options from this list, such as:

  • I am a huge supporter of mainstreamers-gone-alt
  • I am an alt engineering student
  • I am looking for music for my alt-bro sausage-fest pre-party
  • I am making a mix CD for a mainstream girl who likes 'random' stuff
  • Child Predators r 4 Lovers

Developing....
Formulating an opinion on how I feel about Girl Talk's latest album, and how it fits with the state of the modern world...

Initially, I had told myself that I was not going to like it, but I might have decided to 'give it a fair chance,' but I will probably just use it as a way to distance myself from 'the type of people who kreem themselves abt how awesome Girl Talk is.'

How do u feel about the new Girl Talk album?
Will it take down Lil Wayne's album?
Will it be more socially significant than Coldplay's new album?
Do you hope he gets sent to jail for stealing music from Napster and making them into songs?

Girl Talk's New Personal Brand is a Metaphor

Girl Talk's myspace pic is kinda kute, & kinda scary. I think it is a metaphor about his personal identity/his upcoming new album.

I think it means
a) Girl Talk is an alt child predator who taunts the parents of abused children by burning his stage name on to their front lawn
b) it represents how his music is resonating with kids from suburbia, since they only listen to stuff that they are told is cool. Girl Talk is able to concoct his own form of deconstructed pop. He is more talented than Brian Wilson.
c) Girl Talk worships Satan
d) Girl Talk will join a cult and attempt to board a space ship on the tail of a comet by killing himself
e) C.Y.O.Response

Remember the old Girl Talk aesthetic?

Hopefully his new image will help him to crossover into mainstream culture x 1000000.

Be careful if you pre-partie or after-partie with Girl Talk.

Girl Talk: &#34;I Created Child Predator&#34;

I can't believe Girl Talk is going to let me 'pay what I want' for his next 'album.' How much r u planning on paying? I wonder what samples he is going to use this time. I hope he uses Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)." I can't wait to see the first music video from the album. It will probably be rlly viral and artsy.

The future of the Child Predator:

Is there such thing as a free spirited child predator?

Greg Gillis is one of the best examples of a 'mainstreamer gone alt.' His transition into a full-fledged alternative celebrity is one that we should all study and appreciate.

Have U Ever Been In Love?

[TakeMorePhotos]

Do you remember the last time you were at a concert, and you were moved to share an intimate moment with your lover?

I think the last time that happened to me was during the last 2 minutes of Interpol's "PDA" in 2002.

Since I don't talk about live music much, this post is dedicated to discussing the power of music in the live setting.

Multiple Choice (Pick One)

When was the last time you were moved by live music?
a) Gun Shots during an M.I.A. song?
b) An amazing beatmatch transition by Steve Aoki between a Soulwax RMX into a Bloc Party Remix?
c) Justice putting the "D.A.N.C.E" lyrics over "Phantom pt II"?
d) A Dan Deacon secret concert orgy that he tried to convince you was 'performance art'?
e) Making out with a 15 year old wearing American Apparel for the first time to a Girl Talk concert
f) Hearing Broken Social Scene's "Lover's Spit" for the first time when you were in a relationship with a mainstreamer searching for his/her inner-alt, and listened to Broken Social Scene + The Postal Service?
g) Taking advantage of some one on LSD at an Animal Collective concert?

Girl Talk: The Movie...Coming Soon?

Girl Talk chills on a magazine cover. Found at SKEET SKEET.

If they made "GIRL TALK: THE MOVIE", who would play Gregg Gillis?

Suggestions:
*Elijah Wood

*Paul Rudd

*Tobey Maguire

*Cillian Murphy

*Adrien Brody

*Alec Baldwin after dieting

*Jason Priestly?

Bob Seger could play Girl Talk AFTER the his downfall, when his party lifestyle leads him to be released by Illegal Art.

Dave Navarro could play Girl Talk in 2008, when critics got into his head and he tried to prove them wrong by incorporating guitar solos into his live set.

Carson Daly can play the ghost of Girl Talk, after he is assassinated.

DID I MISS ANY? COMMENT

Footage from Girl Talk @ Washington University

Here's video of Gregg Gillis trying to level with campus security after that dude got tasered.
It's also a great display of college mob behavior.

It's definitely a clip worth glorifying in the introduction of a feature article about Girl Talk.

Girl Talk displays traits that indicate why he is one of America's Top Leaders that Young People Listen To. I think he'll be one of People's 50 Most Beautiful People when his next album comes out.

Myspace Bulletins are Modern Press Releases

From a Girl Talk Myspace Bulletin:

HEY, no need to reply to this, i have a hard time keeping up with myspace messages

i just wanted to say that the st. louis show was awesome, and it sucks it had to be stopped prematurely. i don't know the details of the story, but some naked guy got tazed. then they made me stop. i honestly didn't have that much more material to perform, but i thought it was unfortunate how they didn't allow me to end my own set and cut off my time on the microphone trying to arrange a post-show show. and of course, it sucks that someone got tazed for whatever reason.

on a more positive note, we ended up moving the show to a frat basement, and it ruled. thanks to everyone who helped set that up within 1 hour. i haven't jammed a basement this entire year, it was very refreshing and insane

DON'T TASE ME BRO: GIRL TALK EDITION

Check out the Daily Swarm to find out about a guy getting tased in the ass for a prolonged period of time at the Girl Talk concert at Washington University on November 9th.

The guy was apparently getting naked, and it was on a college campus, so I guess it's good that college campuses use tasers instead of guns to control unruly people.

If you're going to have a Girl Talk concert, crazy things are going to happen. After a stage collapse in Dallas, the world is definitely waiting until a GIRL TALK TRAGEDY. Once some one dies at a Girl Talk concert, there's definitely going to be a whole series of 60 Minutes-type specials on 'a DJ who steals all of his music and kills people.' I wonder if it will be good or bad for his image.

I think Illegal Art (Girl Talk's label) should come up with an innovative new profit model, where he sells GIRL TALK LOTTERY TICKETS and VIP STAGE PASSES in order to regulate who gets to be on stage at the concert. It would probably be a good idea to get a good group of tame rich people on stage instead of greasy teens and belligerent members of the hipster proletariat who don't know how to chill.

I think some one will probably die at a Girl Talk show in a foreign country.
What do YOU think?

Let's be REALISTIC

Illegal Art, you know, the label that Girl Talk is on, has a new release today. REALISTIC drops "Perpetual Memory Loss." It's more sample based music that challenges the restrictions of copyright as interpreted by those who usually interpret the law.

Realistic is a James Towning, a musician and graphic designer, currently working in Manhattan as a motion-graphics designer. Do you think Illegal Art recruits non-music making professionals on purpose? Remember when Gregg Gillis (AKA Girl Talk) used to be a biomedical engineer? Working with young professionals must be more reasonable than trying to promote hollow kids in a 'fresh band' with not-so-innovative music.

Here's the official rundown on the album:

Realistic's third album Perpetual Memory Loss will be released by Illegal Art on October 23rd, 2007. It features sixteen tracks of intricate sample-based compositions-- a beautifully sophisticated celebration of found sound, recorded media, technology, and electronic composition.

So for people who want oversimplified descriptions, it's kind of like Girl Talk, the Books, The Avalanches and some other sample based music. It's definitely worth blogging about. The whole album is available to stream here.
