b) architecture in Helsinki
c) Sixpence None the Richer
d) The Veronicas
e) no wave
f) shoe gaze
i) female alts with tatties-core
j) no-wave post-fuzz music
k) beach punk fuzz revivalist
l) Lilith Fair artists
m) Jewel ft Dido (Meredith Brooks Remix)
n) Bjork
o) Lookbook Tween Superstar Band
p) Choose.Your.Own.Response

What kind of music would they make if they were a band, yall?

Sometimes I’m out in public, and I see a group, and I think either
a) I wish I could be bros with that pack of bros
OR
b) Glad I’m not associated with that pack of leftover bros who banded together to come bros

I was looking at groups of bros who I might want 2 search for on FaceTwitspace, and I wondered which group would take my personal brand to the next level [via association].

Would yall rather be bros with Chris Martin Viva La Vida Altbro & his army of Mainstreamers experimenting with alternative parties? [via an AZN 'flipping the bird']

Or The Freshly Purchased Am Appy Products Crew?

It’s really important to have a crew that looks ‘legit.’ When u walk into an alternative event, you have to look like you ‘belong.’ U don’t want to look like an 18 year old entry leveler who ‘wants 2 find out what Sparks tastes like.’

Make people believe that high level alternative events are your home-away-from-home. Pretend that u were ‘on the guest list.’ Don’t look like you find an event to be meaningful or stimulating, or else u will look like some1 who is ‘new 2 the scene.’

Your personal brand is contingent upon the people you surround yourself with.
Enigmatic brands are usually better than ‘bright, neon’ brands.
Doesn’t matter if u hang out with hollow people in order to establish your brand before moving on to people with ‘more depth.’

Don’t be afraid 2 be selective with ur crew.

I remember when I determined that a group of my closest friends and I looked like an indie band whenever we stepped out in public. It was important for us to all have an ‘individual look’, but still have a relevant, cohesive group aesthetic. This group of alts are showing off what 2k9 and beyond will be all about. It’s like the authentic alt aesthetic has finally ‘arrived’ and has a new group of torch carriers to bring on a Golden Age of Authenticity. Now that we understand the value of a group, and how our personal brands merge to make us a commodity, the entire ‘alt scene’ can work together to convert more mainstreamers to ‘our side.’

Basically, whenever you are with a group of friends, you should want people to mistake you for a band/blogger-circle-jerk/scooter gang/DJ duo/etc. You have to inspire people to want to be your friend. You have to inspire people 2 want 2 b u.

From a previous meaningful post:

When people say ‘u look like ur in a band’, it means that you are some one who is on the cutting edge of culture from the perception of some1 who doesn’t know much about modern culture, but would like to learn more abt it from u (since u l00k pretty interesting and creative). “Looking like you’re in a band” isn’t a look for every one. The people who will admire you are usually entry-level alts or mainstreamers-who-are-infatuated-with-alternative culture (and listen to a lot of mainstream indie rock circa 2k4.5)

Wonder if my friends want a group brand like Interpol…

Or if they want a group brand more like Millionaires…

Not sure which 1 would get us more ‘authentic, relevant attention.’

Might just get a group brand like Heaven’s Gate…

Or maybe just the Jonestown cult bros…

// Is my group of closest friends worth dying for?
// or are they just ‘an extension of my personal brand who are expendable in the long run’?

It’s important to always remember that the people you hang out with are sometimes a better representation of ‘YOU’ than you are. Whether you are in a herd of altBros, or in a situation where you are only seen in public with your long-term-Alt-significant-other, being with people who look as interesting & deliberate as u is very important.

True alts definitely don’t want to look like they are in a band or hang out with people who look like they are in a band. SRSLY…do u want to look like the Strokes? Interpol? Kings of Leon? The Black Kids? Blink 182? Puddle of Mudd? Miscellaneous zany band? Miscellaneous British rock band? Miscellaneous mixed gender band? Miscellaneous art-rock band? Miscellaneous lo-fi conceptual band?

True Alts would rather look:

homeless

parentless

tragic mctragtrag

genderless

fashionsenseless

starved

like they are in a cult

like they are from the past/future/post-future

Girls can only look like ‘they are in a band’ when they are in a group of guys-who are dressed like they are in a band, which you can tell by looking at the photo above.
A group of girls who would theoretically be ‘dressed like they are in a band’ probably just look like a herd of girls who are eager to be in LongTermRelationships with altBros. (a.k.a. they just look like a gaggle of altSkanks). This is mainly because it’s hard to view a girl who ‘dresses trendily’ as being some1 who is genuinely creative/interesting. (unless ur Miranda July)

‘Looking like you’re in a band’ will come back and haunt you eventually. If you look like you are in a band beyond 30, your personal brand will automatically be converted into ‘trying-too-hard cool dad‘ or ‘out-of-touch-with-reality free-spirited mom.’

XX BONUS BAND WHO IS DRESSED LIKE THEY ARE PRETENDING THEY ARE IN A BAND XX

[Video may not be viewable in ur RSS reader]
I love when members of bands wear the t-shirt of another band. That’s something that 6th graders see, and subconsciously post-identify with the band even more.
<3 aligning ur personal brand with other bands [via tshirts] <3
<3 BLOG GROUP THINK created bands <3
