I recently saw a viral meme, made by Nick Cannon and Nas, and it made me think about the state of ‘hip hop / black / rap culture.’ It seems like even African Americans ‘within their ranks’ are ‘disgusted’ with how things have ‘degenerated.’ In the clip, 2 bros are in blackface, and make ’stereotypical black jokes’ and even use modern rapping techniques + drawls. Think it is supposed to be ’self-aware commentary’ that only blacks can make, because only black ppl can critique their own culture.

It really made me think. Kinda made me feel guilty about ‘getting my grind on’ post-ironically when I hear a ‘nasty-ass’ top 40 rap hit. Seems like rap is simple–they just sing about where they used to live (the streets), what they enjoy (stuff that rich ppl spend money on), and what feels good (pussie, fucking, dranking, smoking, etc.) Seems simple, but maybe African-Americans are trying to ‘rebrand’ now that Obama is in office.

Then I saw Major Lazer’s latest video ‘Pon De Floor’, directed by that bro from the zany Adult Swim film ‘Tim and Eric.’ It seems like it might be ‘absurdist racist’ or something. Like something that is supposed to be a ‘parody’ but ultimately speaks volumes about ‘how easy it is to h8 black people’ but also ‘how fun and vibrant they can be in an entertaining way.’

It seems like they are ‘making fun’ of black people culture, or something. Like the dancers are supposed to mean that black people are ‘only interested in sex’ or something like that. Or maybe black people are ‘too dumb’ to be educated, so all they can do is ‘dance in a sexually suggestive format.’ I am not sure if Major Lazer is ‘intentionally trying 2 be racist’ as a complex marketing gimmick. I remember in their previous music video, they exploited the negro stereotype of a ‘goon.’

Maybe I am overthinking this video, and it is just supposed to appeal to AdultSwimBros who just ’smoke weed’ and watch 15 minute long flash-based cartoons.

Sorta just wish I could watch vintage ‘racist memes’ and grin without thinking 2 much abt what they ‘mean.’ Just want to ‘go viral’ with my MexiBro.

Not sure what I am allowed to ‘laugh at’, ‘laugh with’, and ‘embrace as part of black culture.’

Feeling very confused about whether or not I get to even blog about complex racial issues like this. I feel like the only circumstance when African American culture is critiqued is when some rapper is ‘trying to be deep’ but ultimately ‘trying to sell records.’ Feel confused. Wish I lived in the year 3k9, so that then there would be ‘no skin colour’, and the majority of the world would be a ‘creamy brown’ skin colour.

Just want racial issues to go away so that I can enjoy ‘art.’

Language is so weird, yall. Sometimes I feel like it isn’t useful, like we can just communicate with images, videos, life experiences, and memes. For example, I watched this video, and even though I don’t know French, I can ‘relate’ and ‘totally understand’ what this video is all about. I am not sure if these are like famous French rappers like Tony Parker-Longoria or Yelle, but it seems like a similar product. There are also black girls dancing, making it okay that a white Euro is utilizing the art of rap, usually reserved 4 African Americans.

Still feel sort of pissed off that Euros are so obsessed with American stuff, including ‘Gossip Girl’, Michael Jackson (Justice), John Hughes films (M83), and ScarJo (The Teenagers). Tired of ‘fucking Frogs’ stealing American culture. Wish that they’d just stay ‘weird’ like Daft Punk and Sebby Tellier.

Can some1 translate this rap song 4 me?
Does if have themes about ‘getting drunk’, ‘fashion’, ‘partying’ and other stuff that black/alt ppl celebrate?
Does n e 1 know if this was filmed in my local scene, or if every where in the world looks like this place?

Sometimes I wish rappers would just write real songs about ‘needing 2 get ur dick sucked’ by the end of the night, or having sex with multiple women [via date rape drug], or maybe just a song about ‘masturbating urself 2 sleep.’

Sometimes it is weird when a ’successful band’ has ‘a cool new song’ that I think sounds stupid/forced, but it is sort of like ‘a club banger’/marketed as some sort of energetic fun song.

I think that this ‘music video’ might actually be some sort of Hewlett Packard computer commercial. I feel like consumers need to stop honoring the hiphop ‘onomatopoeia’ gimmick. Tired of ‘hooks’/'choruses’ being some sort of onomatopoeia gimmick. I feel like it is ‘lazy’ and ’stupid.’

The Black Eyed Peas seem pretty weird 2 me. I don’t think that they would be ‘quite as marketbable’ if they were all black. I think the addition of a white female to their band was ‘critical.’ Not sure if White America really wants a band with 2 scary black dudes + 1 albino guy. Feel like they need a ‘wigger’ type of character in their band who is representative of ‘who they might want to be.’

I think the ‘Black Eyed Peas’ might be some sort of metaphor.

I wonder if the Black Eyed Peas would have ‘happened’ if the Fugees stayed 2gether. Wonder if Will.I.Am is the modern/’sold out’ version of Wyclef Jean. I feel like Will.I.Am is ‘trying too hard’ to be Marvin Gaye, and write/represent some sort of

Not even sure if we will have ‘bands’ in 2k10. Every1 might be a hologram.

Feel sad when modern stars try to ‘recreate’ the aesthetic+honesty of Marvin Gaye’s “Whats Goin On” and it ends up being some ‘crappy duet’ somehow involving Sheryl Crow/Will.I.Am/Eric Clapton/John Cougar Mellbrocamp/a rap verse that ‘doesn’t fit.’

‘where is the love, yall?’ – Black Eyed Peas

Sort of just want to be ‘a stupid mainstreamer’ who gets pumped up when I heard a song like Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” or the song “Let’s Get it Started.”

Lets Get It Started – The Black Eyed Peas

I want to be a white person
who ‘gets jacked up’
whenever a black person in ‘cool clothes’
comes out, waves their arms
rhymes into a mic
and tells the crowd to ‘get on their feet.’

I will go home
buy this popular song on iTunes
listen to it when I ’start my workout’
to ‘get fucking pumped up’
then choose a slow song 4 my ‘cool down’

What kind of music do yall listen 2 now that bloghaus/electro is dead

Yall I heard this new kewl rap group called Asher Rother, but then found out it is actually just 1 white dude.

In his hit song, he raps about ‘college being awesome.’ I am not sure how many people this song will appeal to, since a lot of people don’t even have a typical ‘college experience’ these days, but I am not sure if that is even important.

This song might also be some sort of education campaign to get people-who-weren’t-gonna-go-2-college 2 go 2 college, convincing them that it is a ‘chill ass time’ where u can ’smoke weed’, ‘fuck hot chicks’, and ‘do whatever the fuck u want.’ Sort of makes me want to go to a mainstream state school instead of design school in the city. Not even sure what this song was talking about except from that movie ‘The Animal Collective House’ starring Jim Belushi [via According 2 Jim].

Recently, I saw that white rapper Eminem is ‘back’ with a ‘kewl new song.’ In the song/music video, he takes on zany meme current events including SARAH PALIN and JESSICA SIMPSON and Lindsay Lohan being a lesbian.

We’ve grown up a lot since Eminem was ‘big.’ Feel like tweens listened to him as a voice that ‘critiqued popular culture.’ This song feels weird now that it is ‘the celeb gossip blog era.’ Feels pretty ‘ghey’ that people ‘like Eminem’ and ‘think he is a gifted rapper.’ Makes me feel like I don’t know anything about rap.’ Sort of wish that Eminem would just ’spit out rhymes’ that were more directly hateful, instead of just making sillie statements that tweens would find funnie and mildly controversial.

I feel like the same person who would like the music in an Eminem track would also like the All American Rejects Song “Gives You Hell.” s000 zany

Remember when 8 mile came out, and people were like ‘This is the best movie of all time.’ Wonder if Kanye West is ‘the Black Eminem.’ Wonder what we really want from rappers/what they want from fans when it comes to image. Feel comfortable with Puff Daddy/Pdiddy because I ‘think he knows he is ridiculous.’ I think 50Cent knows he ‘is dumb’ and ‘was shot a bunch of times’, so he is probably just happy to mumble over club beats. Feel like ‘hiphop’ stars who use auto-tune in a self-aware manner ‘also seem chill.’ Makes me feel sad to see rappers in the modern era where they have to do stuff like ‘make viral videos’ and ‘participate on the internet.’ Not sure if all of them really ‘have what it takes’ to reach white audiences.

I guess that’s why Asher Roth is important 2 music / rcrd lbls / the future of hiphop.

Not sure how I feel about white rappers.
Think we don’t need them, since most white people haven’t gone through an authentic struggle. And if they did ’struggle’ it was probably in a gross white trash kind of way that we could probably ‘make fun of’ very easily.

Some of my bros decided to start a post-pre-post-meta-ironic core rap group. I think the concept behind it is that they are ‘not black’, ‘privileged’, and ‘get’ global issues. I think they are going to build a myspace with powerful graphic images that say controversial stuff, possibly parodying hiphop culture. I think they consider themselves 2 b ‘artists’ but they are also trying to ‘rage against the local scene’ and ‘how fucking stale’ it has become.

Yall. What’s the deal with ‘modern hiphop’? What is the state of ‘hipster rap’? Will bands like ‘The Cool Kids’ ever ‘catch on’? Would u rather watch these bros or M.I.A., or are they ‘basically the same thing’ except MIA has ‘better samples’/a higher ‘production value’?

Do yall have any ‘wannabe rap tribes’ in ur local scene who play at art shows?
Do u think that they are ‘being ironic’ about ‘trying to be a band’ without the emotional + personal commitment of ‘being a band’?

ughh…. so disenfranchised with hiphop/the scene/rap/art/everything.
glad that ‘the real slim shady’ is back with a brand new gimmick to shake up the scene [via autotune]

Do yall think she is more marketable to mainstreamers than “Kala”? Or is M.I.A. an approachable alt who mainstreamers can identify with on a ‘mainstream hip hop’ level?

Is this a biographical song written by M.I.A. but performed by LaFonda?

Should I post this vid every time I blog about “Paper Planes”?

**************
Don’t yall h8 it when people say that Jay-Z is an authentic rapper? Can n e 1 who does a ‘LIVE MASHUP’ album with Linkin Park be that authentic? I feel like he’s gotten less authentic every year he has been alive.

If you’re looking for some rap/ hip hop to add to your music library, this is definitely the mixtape for you. If you rave about the Ratatat Remixes, then you’ll definitely enjoy this mixtape.
Consequence is boyz with Kanye West. You’ve probably heard Consequence on Kanye West’s song “Spaceship” off COLLEGE DROPOUT.

In case you want to know why this mixtape is cool within your circle of friends, here is an excerpt from DJ Whoo Kid’s Wikipedia Entry:

Based in Queens, he became popular not long after 50 Cent and G-Unit rose to fame. His new fame has enabled him to have his own radio show on New York’s Hot 97 as well as on Sirus Satellite Radio. Because of his close relation the G-Unit group, he was made their official DJ.
On January 15, 2004 DJ Whoo Kid won the award for Best Mixtape DJ at Justo Faison’s Eighth Annual Mixtape Awards. He has appeared on magazines such as XXL, Tablist, Mixtape,[citation needed] and many others. He has also released DVDs and a clothing line in Japan.
Whoo Kid’s mixtape musical selection tends to lean towards aggressive, New-York flavored gangsta rap, and his show features many new and unheard tunes, often exclusives from the G-Unit Records camp.
