What Authenticity+IndieBands Will Look Like in 2k9

I remember when I determined that a group of my closest friends and I looked like an indie band whenever we stepped out in public. It was important for us to all have an ‘individual look’, but still have a relevant, cohesive group aesthetic. This group of alts are showing off what 2k9 and beyond will be all about. It’s like the authentic alt aesthetic has finally ‘arrived’ and has a new group of torch carriers to bring on a Golden Age of Authenticity. Now that we understand the value of a group, and how our personal brands merge to make us a commodity, the entire ‘alt scene’ can work together to convert more mainstreamers to ‘our side.’

Basically, whenever you are with a group of friends, you should want people to mistake you for a band/blogger-circle-jerk/scooter gang/DJ duo/etc. You have to inspire people to want to be your friend. You have to inspire people 2 want 2 b u.

When people say ‘u look like ur in a band’, it means that you are some one who is on the cutting edge of culture from the perception of some1 who doesn’t know much about modern culture, but would like to learn more abt it from u (since u l00k pretty interesting and creative). “Looking like you’re in a band” isn’t a look for every one. The people who will admire you are usually entry-level alts or mainstreamers-who-are-infatuated-with-alternative culture (and listen to a lot of mainstream indie rock circa 2k4.5)

Wonder if my friends want a group brand like Interpol…

Or if they want a group brand more like Millionaires…

Not sure which 1 would get us more ‘authentic, relevant attention.’

Might just get a group brand like Heaven’s Gate…

Or maybe just the Jonestown cult bros…

We live in a world where things change every day. One day u r famous, the next day no1 knows who u r. One day u r a viral internet meme…the next day ur just another person who uses the internet too much and understands the concept of a ‘meme.’

I’ve always wondered what Interpol would sound like if they went acoustic, and replaced the lead singer’s deep vocals with a female.

Check out this cover of “NYC.”

She does a good job of expressing Interpol’s cryptic yet meaningful lyrics.

1954. is a refreshing listen. Their songs are a pleasant throwback to the kind of indie rock you probably listened to in the Pre-Postal Service world.

They’re from San Diego. Their Myspace Blog has more historical facts.

1954. says:

The demo was self made through an 8 tracker, and we’re not real savvy with mastering programs and what not, so we used a ripped editing program off the internet and used whatever Demo /Trial it would allow us. We used very cheap mics.

1954.’s music gives you the opportunity to compare them to a lot. It reminds me a lot of what’s being blogged about these days with a lofi edge that makes it way more approachable/listenable. There’s also some aspects that remind me about the best elements of the Go Team, old Interpol, and Q And Not U.

Their songs will leave a lot of people feeling like it’s either forgettable crap, or addicted to the sound that they manage to create. There’s a free internet demo at their myspace.

Interpol’s new album sounds more Interpol-y than ever. While every one will always love “Turn On The Bright Lights,” we all have had to readjust our tastebuds to try to appreciate “Antics” and “Our Love to Admire.”

I’ve listened to “Our Love to Admire” a few times the whole way through, and it gets pretty good. So while you might want to say “Interpol sucks!” you should probably just re-evaluate the context of the music scene in 2007 vs 2004, or whenever you looooved Interpol.
