Major Lazer
Trying 2 understand what is 'racism' and what is 'challenging the way that ppl think abt culture.'

I recently saw a viral meme, made by Nick Cannon and Nas, and it made me think about the state of 'hip hop / black / rap culture.' It seems like even African Americans 'within their ranks' are 'disgusted' with how things have 'degenerated.' In the clip, 2 bros are in blackface, and make 'stereotypical black jokes' and even use modern rapping techniques + drawls. Think it is supposed to be 'self-aware commentary' that only blacks can make, because only black ppl can critique their own culture.

It really made me think. Kinda made me feel guilty about 'getting my grind on' post-ironically when I hear a 'nasty-ass' top 40 rap hit. Seems like rap is simple--they just sing about where they used to live (the streets), what they enjoy (stuff that rich ppl spend money on), and what feels good (pussie, fucking, dranking, smoking, etc.) Seems simple, but maybe African-Americans are trying to 'rebrand' now that Obama is in office.

Then I saw Major Lazer's latest video 'Pon De Floor', directed by that bro from the zany Adult Swim film 'Tim and Eric.' It seems like it might be 'absurdist racist' or something. Like something that is supposed to be a 'parody' but ultimately speaks volumes about 'how easy it is to h8 black people' but also 'how fun and vibrant they can be in an entertaining way.'

</embed>

It seems like they are 'making fun' of black people culture, or something. Like the dancers are supposed to mean that black people are 'only interested in sex' or something like that. Or maybe black people are 'too dumb' to be educated, so all they can do is 'dance in a sexually suggestive format.' I am not sure if Major Lazer is 'intentionally trying 2 be racist' as a complex marketing gimmick. I remember in their previous music video, they exploited the negro stereotype of a 'goon.'

Maybe I am overthinking this video, and it is just supposed to appeal to AdultSwimBros who just 'smoke weed' and watch 15 minute long flash-based cartoons.

Sorta just wish I could watch vintage 'racist memes' and grin without thinking 2 much abt what they 'mean.' Just want to 'go viral' with my MexiBro.

Not sure what I am allowed to 'laugh at', 'laugh with', and 'embrace as part of black culture.'

Feeling very confused about whether or not I get to even blog about complex racial issues like this. I feel like the only circumstance when African American culture is critiqued is when some rapper is 'trying to be deep' but ultimately 'trying to sell records.' Feel confused. Wish I lived in the year 3k9, so that then there would be 'no skin colour', and the majority of the world would be a 'creamy brown' skin colour.

Just want racial issues to go away so that I can enjoy 'art.'

Meaningful Music Videos for yall.

Hey yall... Just taking some time to recap some recently 'relevant' music videos 4 yall. Feel sad about summer. I read that there are 60% less music memes to consume. :-(

Music Video: Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks

</embed>

Analysis: Feel like this is a 'perfectly executed meme' since it is a music video that you watch, and ur like 'damn. not sure what is happening/why it is happening. Think I should share this with people. Song is catchy.' Not sure what the budget of this music video was, but possibly should have spent more money on the heads-catching-on-fire part.

Can't believe Grizz Bear outsold Animal Collective in week 1. I wonder if there is some sort of metric to calculate album sales + leaked album downloads to see who is the #1 Alt Artist, instead of going by Grizz Bear's "#8 on billboard." Apparently they sold 33,000 records. Feel like there are at least 33,000 altbros who googled 'Grizzly Bear album leak." We need to adjust our album sales evaluation scale. Wonder if AnCo would have more 'reach' if u took into account illegal DLs. Wonder if Kings of Leon is the next Coldplay.

Music Video: Super Viral Brothers - Hot Chocolate + Polar Bear Rug

</embed>

Analysis: I have never heard of this group and might never hear of them again, but their name is 'sillie.' I think this video is supposed to 'shock me' since there are a bunch of bros rolling around in blood in some small room. The singer is black, and may or may not be CeeLo. Feel 'disturbed' by this video in a predictable way, but it also might give my dark side a 'hard on.'

Music Video: Wale ft. Lady Gaga - Chillin

</embed>

Analysis: I think that Wale released some gimmick rapper who is meant to appeal to white people and get coverage on the internet, mainly because 'mixtape' meant to appeal to white people since it was about Seinfeld, and also rapped over Justice's D.A.N.C.E. I didn't listen to this song, since I know it is a gimmick, but instead looked for Lady Gaga's presence in the song. I saw her in the background doing 'stupid ass' poses trying 2 be 'artistic.' Sorta wish she was a video girl who was 'shaking her shit.' Then she sings like Santigold/an indie rastafarian for a little bit, and it's like 'damn. guess this is a music meme.'

Music Video: Major Lazer - Hold The Line
</embed>
Analysis: I am still trying to 'understand' what Major Lazer 'actually is.' I know that Diplo is 'behind it' and I think it is supposed 2 be absurd partie music using African sounds and also sillie sounds. They have created some sort of character who is prominent in this video. I think this video is supposed 2 keep ur attention because it reminds of u when u were young since there are sillie cartoons and action figures. I think people have called Diplo 'racist' because of this black goon of a character, and how has 'exploited' African/other black ppl culture even though he is white. I am not sure. He might 'just be trying to have a good time' but also might be 'trying to pay his bills' [via "Paper Planes royalties"]

Have yall seen any good music videos lately?

Are Major Lazer Show a safety hazard? [via Skerrit Bwoy]

Skerrit Bwoy is known as one of the 'hype men' of the act Major Lazer. Basically, since Major Lazer is just two DJs (2 DJs aren't that interesting to watch), they hired some sort of black islander to be the 'absurd hype man.' They also have a series of risque dancers meant to 'give the crowd boners' / hope breasts + vag lips 'peep out.'

From what I understand, Skerrit Bwoy was being 'unruly' at a SXSW show. He was a human safety hazard, climbing speakers that could have fallen on innocent clubgoers.  The bouncers thought the vibe was 'too much' and just wanted to keep the party safe.

Diplo and Switch's debut album as Major Lazer, Guns Don't Kill People-- Lazers Do, triumphs as a combination of studio wizardry and all-star guest spots. Not exactly the easiest thing to pull off in the live setting, especially with Switch absent and no all-star guests to be found. So what we got was Diplo mixing up his insanely fun dancehall music while a hype man, Skerrit Bwoy, and a dancer, Mimi, pleased the crowd. It succeeded beyond my wildest expectations.

Mimi was an absolute marvel of athleticism, part stripper and part gymnast. She stood on her head, she did splits, she got lower than low, she vibrated like a Nokia, she wrapped her legs around Skerrit Bwoy and a lucky dude who got pulled from the audience. Skerrit Bwoy, a ball of energy topped with a yellow mohawk, climbed on just about anything and everything, much to the chagrin of the Cedar Street Courtyard's security. He brought a bunch of female audience members on stage and danced lasciviously with them, he swung a gold chain violently around his neck. He and Mimi made a superlative comedic and acrobatic team, so much so, that I almost forgot that Diplo was even on stage-- until he dropped Ace of Base's "All That She Wants" and the crowd went apeshit.

Seems like this is supposed to be like going to some sort of 3rd world sex party, or something. Sort of seems like some DJ should hire pure strippers or prostitutes to take this gimmick to the next level.

Worried that Major Lazer shows are 'too dangerous.' Like I could die, or possibly get an STD.
Should venues control unruly performers?
Should performers 'play it safe' for the sake of their fans?
Will some1 die at an indie music concert within the next year because of crowd control issues?
Is Skerrit Bwoy bad 4 America?

Is Majo Lazer the next Daft Punk?

CONSPIRACY THEORY: "MAJOR LAZER RACIST imagery EXPOSED & Dissected"
</embed>

Major Lazer is a dance sound project by Diplo and Switch. Their music videos + product have 'come under fire' for being 'racist' since the exploit a culture that is not their own/has black skin.  Some African Americans think that they are 'racist ass holes.'

The video above is a semi-boring meme that diagrams the racist images deployed by their sound project:

This Documentary is composed of pics of Racist Imagery Created by the Group Known as Major Lazer (Diplo & Switch) taken on my iphone. Focusing on the 3 Major Lazer videos that are currently circulating around the Globe...We have come to the conclusion that the Group is Promoting Negative Stereotypes of the African Diaspora ie by Making Caribbean People seem as though they are Foolish Hyper-Sexual animalistic Sambo's. We Have created this short Documentary to put an End to the Exploitation of Womyn and People of Color.

Worried abt ppl who 'go 2 college' and learn 2 much about cultural imagery.
