The Levels of 'Going Mainstream' (MIA chills with Oprah)
Photo tip via #guerilla vs bro twitt accnt

Sometimes I wonder how 'mainstream' a formerly independent artist can go. I feel like there are 'levels of going mainstream' which inspire an escalating amount of resentment/'backlash' against u, depending on how mainstream your music/personal brand goes. I think it is 'important for a band to try to go mainstream' so that they can setup college funds for their kids. But when a band/artist 'goes mainstream', we can't help but feel a lil bit like 'h8 u.'

Here is a list of escalating microevents which make u feel like 'fuck... they r going mainstream':

  • Having ur music used in a commercial
  • Getting a mainstream record deal where u have 2 make 6 albums and only get like 3% of sales
  • Your CDs are in a mainstream store like Best Buy
  • Playing live at a Late Show
  • Playing live on a Late Show
  • Being played in the background of an MTV show/promo spot
  • Having ur song be the theme song to 'The Hills'
  • A legacy 'artist' like David Byrne saying that 'ur music is rlly authentic.'
  • Some free spirited cunt saying that she 'listens 2 ur band all the time' in a magazine interview (like Natalie Portman in her prime)
  • One of those authentic male actors 'saying that ur music is good' and 'being in attendance at ur concert'  (like Ryan Gosling showing up at a Grizzly Bear concert, then getting blurbed about being there)
  • U r 'blurbed about' as 'the next big thing' in some notable magazine that will go out of business next year
  • Having a rapper sing over ur catchiest song
  • Kanye West nonsensically raps over ur song just cuz it is 'so kewl'
  • Being nominated for a Grammy but losing to a pop star/rap star
  • Winning a grammy
  • Ur music is used by a political campaign since the message is so generic and welcoming, and the song is pretty catchy/uplifting
  • Lindsay Lohan going 2 ur concert/DJ Set
  • A 'very famous' like Bono/Thom Yorke saying that 'ur band is rlly good.'
  • Getting ur picture taken with Oprah
  • Barry Obama lists u as an artist on his iPod
  • Marrying some1 richer/famouser/more influential than u
  • You play in some shitty 'live collab' where u sing an old song with an old artist, like singing "Brown Eyed Girl" in some shitty duet with Van Morrison
  • Having Oprah 'perform a sexual favor' on u
  • God puts ur music on his playlist in his iTunes library

Can yall think of any other events within the alternative artist product lifecycle where u 'find urself cringing' and saying 'fuck... we lost them.... think they are mainstream now'? Has there ever been a particular artist that u stopped liking after they 'fucking sold out' by being involved in one of the above circumstances? R u worried about M.I.A.'s next album, and the 'hype backlash'?

Sort of wish Oprah would use her massive platform to 'do something good' instead of just being snarky and causing health scares across the nation. Tired of her being some1 who 'tells middle america' about emerging trends/weight loss techniques/technologies. Wish we could build them a 'website 4 stupid people' or something.

M.I.A. keeps ‘mudslinging @ people more famous than her’ 2 get headlines, h8s Oprah now

I'm not sure how M.I.A. manages to 'stay relevant.' Her album 'flopped'/probably lost her record label money, but I think people still enjoy 'having a reason to h8 her.' That's kinda why blogs keep blogging about her. I think she mismanaged her branding model, so now people see her as 'a human meme' instead of an artist we are supposed to buy albums from.

N e ways, she talked to some magazine, and kept mentioning famous people, and how she h8s them/they h8 her:

First she got in a fight with Pharrell Williams, she says. "He was telling me off like crazy." Then came Diddy, who told her the last time he saw her she was "so fat." (She was pregnant.) ... He was like, "I never knew what you looked like because I never met you when you were skinny."

Do yall think M.I.A. was fat when she was preggers?
Or did she just have a baby in her belly?

Then she attacked another woman who 'has trouble managing her weight' [via Oprah]:

Meanwhile, she says, "Oprah seemed like she was giving me the cold shoulder."

Why?

"She was with Iman [Bowie]. Iman was always dancing with me, hugging and kissing me, but Oprah seemed really (ticked) off with me," says M.I.A.

Had to google "Iman Bowie." Looks like David Bowie's alien hot model wife.

Do u think Oprah has time for D-list alt celebs like M.I.A.?
Do u think M.I.A. is bitter that the Opbro hasn't invited her on her show to ramble about Sri Lanka?
Do white, middle aged women care about global problems from countries that Angelina Jolie hasn't adopted a child from? [via the Malawi Theory]
Do u think Oprah cares about Iman Bowie when she can throw down chills with Michelle Obama 'on the reg'?

Wonder if Oprah is 'chill' [via being a bro who ur mom chills with every afternoon, sharing content, memes, and healthy living tips].

Then M.I.A. 'artfully' ties in a typical "Lady Gaga is bullshit" comment, saying that she is a 'rich, entitled ass bitch.' Feel like she's already done this 1 before so it doesn't even count:

"Also she made this huge speech at the ball praising Lady Gaga and about how she [Lady Gaga] is helping Americans to be the best of themselves. There's millions of other Americans who represent that for me. Is [it] about numbers? About how much you're selling? Is it truly about the journey? Because [Lady Gaga's] journey isn't that difficult: to go from the (expletive) Upper East Side to a (expletive) performing arts school and on to a stage at the museum of (expletive) wherever. That journey's about four miles."

Feel like maybe she is trying to justify her 'poor album sales' by saying she is 'after something completely different' than Larry Gagsmith.

Is Lady Gaga a 'rich, entitled brat'?
Does M.I.A. h8 black and white people?
Does M.I.A. live in a world where she h8s every1?
After M.I.A.'s marriage to her billionaire heir husband, is her net worth greater than Lady Gaga's net worth?
Are yall tired of M.I.A.'s gimmicks?
Do yall think MIA gets too much 'press' but doesn't have a good enough product to inspire iTunes purchases?
Who should M.I.A. talk shit about next?
Should she go after Princess Diana / Mother Theresa? [via posthumously]
