Passion Pit
My meaningful, conceptual alternative wedding.

As yall know, I haven't been posting as much lately. I have some great news to relay to yall. I finally got married. It was a beautiful ceremony, and we even had one of my art school bros create a video for us that is really in line with our alternative brand. So many tacky ass people get standard wedding photographers to document their weddings. I think the goal of those photographers is to 'make the bride look skinny', and justify the groom's role in the wedding by taking a few meaningful 'bro pix' that really make it clear that the groomsmen are an 'authentic can of bros.'

N e ways, our conceptual video turned out pretty amazingly. We used the hit song "Sleepyhead" by the Passion Pits as 'our song' since it really represented our 'new lease on life.'

</embed>

Just wanted every1 at the wedding to 'know who we are'
'what we're all about'
Understand that we are more than just 'any other lame couple'
who is uniting together for tax benefits

Beautiful ceremony
Beautiful bros
Beautiful bitches
Walking around conceptually
moving arms, facing zany angles
metaphor 4 how we are 'obtuse as shit' in a right angled society

Eff dress shoes
Wearing some Converse
[via Best Coast / Vampy Weekend collab]

Feel like everything was perfect
for 1 night
we were all sleepie heads
A feast
a carnival
a partie
an electro rave without any deaths
Feel like my immediate family
and my extended family
finally realized 'who I am' as an alternative person
and how I 'see the world' in a different/abstract way

Just want to drive away with my lover
Riding the minivan wave
2 our honeymoon on the concrete beaches of Brooklyn

Are yall gonna have an alt wedding?
What indie song is going to be 'yalls song'?
Did this video 'kill it'?
Is this couple 'the most authentic couple in the world'?
Do u think they will be happy forever, or will they get divorced when 1 of them decides that Passion Pit is 'too entry level' 4 them, then the other 1 gets defensive because the song 'means a lot' 2 them?
What are u gonna do at ur wedding to make sure u don't have a mainstream, middle class wedding?
Do u feel sad when u see high school/college acquaintances 'getting married', 'looking happy', and ultimately having an upper-middle class tacky-wave wedding?
If ur not going to be rich, is the only thing left to do with ur life 'get married and pop/poop out a few kids'?

Is it still authentic to be 'alt'?

I am the SleepyHeadBro.
This bro is me.
This is my youtube presence.

</embed>

Sometimes I get the feeling that 'being alt' is just some sort of game. Like any1 can dress up to look alt, if you just shop at the right stores, or if you wait 1.3 years for Hot Topic to sell 'what seemed alt 2 years ago.'

Should I buy an expensive hair iron?
Should I buy a zany wrist band?
Should I buy a Palestinian Scarf?
Should I buy a time machine and live in 2k7 forever?
Should I draw 'blood' running down my nose to make ppl think that I just did 'a shit load of blow'?

Not sure who I am. Might be growing older. Might be losing touch with the tween generation. Seems like it might all just be a game of 'fucking dress up.' Not sure if ppl even really like music, or if 'enjoying music' is just aligning your personal brand with shifting aesthetics over time to represent 'personal growth.' Not sure why I like what I like. Losing it. Losing everything. Honestly don't even know what the best album of 2k9 is.

Is it no longer authentic to be 'alt'?
Was 'alt' just some sort of 'defense mechanism' 2 keep from feeling like 'just another brick in the wall'?
What is the new 'alt'? I feel like I must answer this question in order to move forward as a blog.

Alt is dead?

Should I have gone 2 Sasquatch Music Festival? Seems more authentic than Coachella.

Yall. I <3 music festivals. As I always say, they are the only place where I feel like I am 'home.' I get to chill with people who like like me and have similar interests, and I get to see my fave alt celebs performing/spy on them through the security gate.

Feel like I missed out on a lot of meaningful experiences.

I could have beta tested new Am Appy designs with Karen O of the Ya Yea Yeas.

Could have seen some zany bro.

Could have made zany faces while singing meaningful Passion Pit songs

Could have made zany faces while singing meaningful AnCo songs [via Avey Tare]

Could have made scary faces while singing with King Of Leon alphabro

Are alt music festivals all going 2 have comedy now? Might watch ADULT SWIM LIVE starring Tim and Eric. I read in a blog that they direct music videos or something.

Could have sang Karaoke with my political science professor/T.A.

Could have made angry faces about TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek about having to play to a crowd of bros even though ur a production genius

Could have talked about music industry issues & channeling ur hurt/anger into transcendent rock anthems with Trent Reznor.

Could have chilled with Kevin 'Bisexual JokerAlt' Barnes during a zany OfMonty set

Could have had 'my junk' eaten out by a tiger

Just coulda chilled with bros, sat in the sun on a blanket, listening to some sweet, sweet alternative tunes.

Might have also met a tuggle of entry-level girls who were just under-18 who u get drunk & 'take advantage' of.

Whenever I miss a music festival within 3000 miles of my own home, am I missing out on one of the most potentially meaningful experiences of my life?

Is Passion Pit the next Animal Collective?

Yall. Heard a new conceptual buzzband. They are called Passion Pit. They seem like a chill band who is always down to either grow a beard or wear glasses. Heard this one song called 'Sleepy Head.' I think it is 'pretty good.'

[MP3]
Passion Pit Sleepyhead

Saw this live performance of the song. Think they are one of those bands who care about making music that is conceptual, 'produced at a high level', and 'doing a good job of replicating the album experience with the live show.' These are elements of music that I value in the modern world.

</embed>

From what I have read in some blogs, they have a new album coming out. Wonder if it will 'leak.' Will probably actually just buy it on vinyl or something. I think 'vinyl' is the only way that artists get paid these days, from what I have read on the internet music websites on the internet.

I saw this 'making of' video where they corral some sort of innercity children's choir to sing 'backup' on their conceptual album. I think there is a funny part where the 'make sure that the kids hit 6 distinct notes.' (at the 2:50 mark)

</embed>

Hope they took the kids out for Happy Meals or something. I wonder how Justice compensated the kids in the popular song 'D.A.N.C.E.'

I wonder what it would be like to be a child growing up in the city, going to a school with a name that was some sort of combination of letters and numbers (instead of the name of an astronaut/former President/supreme court justice/ regional historical icon). Wish I had some sort of inspired Teach for America bro as my teacher who inspired us to sing pop music hits that were filmed and 'meant to go viral.'

</embed>

Hope he makes a movie kind of like 'Mr. Holland's Opus' + 'youtube.' I think the lead singer bro of Vampire Weekend was a Teach For America bro. I wonder if he got to opt out of his 2-3 year commitment after he 'got famous' and found a better way to pay off his Ivy League Stafford/Perkins loans.

"I used 2 rule the world." -innercity kids b4 the grow up/Chris Martin

Do yall know who is the next Animal Collective? Really want to 'look forward' to an album again to 'the point that it is unhealthy' and leads 'the internet' to question 'why' we even listen to/like music.

Sort of wonder if the 'conceptual-core' genre of 2k9-2k10 will just be remembered as this 'weird time' where we 'worried about backlash' and never even 'really appreciated the music.' I just want to keep pretending I am some1 who 'listens to music' for 'all the right reasons' without considering the context by which I consume new music.

Here are general statements about my perception of how this album will sound without 'actually hearing it':

  • I think it will be an album that 'lingers around ur iTunes' for a long time.
  • I feel like this album will be '74% more accessible' than Merriweather Post Pavillion.
  • I feel like it will be 47% less authentic-core than Grizzly Bear's album Veckatimest
  • I feel like Passion Pit's 'best album' will be in 2 albums (for no real reason), but they will eventually be considered 'better' and 'more fun' than Animal Collective as AnCo gets 'too conceptual' for people to even 'pretend to appreciate any more.'
  • Panda Bear will make the best album of 2k10, writing a song called "Bros Pt 2: He Seems Like a Chill Bro."
  • Animal Collective will eventually 'break up' but then get back together in 10 years, playing their first show at Coachella, then selling out large auditoriums for $50-$80 per ticket.

What are some predictions that yall have about the future of the Conceptual-Core genre?

Lamestreamers make some 'funnie skit' abt winning tickets 2 a Passion Pit Concert
</embed>

From what I understand, there is a new brand of 'web humor' that is basically trying to get 'youtube views' instead of 'laughs.' 'Views' are a metric that potentially 'mean more' than laughs, so there are tons of groups of bros with HD Video cameras that 'try 2 make funnie videos that go viral.'

Anyways, it seems like this 'web comedy group' made a 'skit/video' abt winning tix 2 a pash pit concert bc they think it makes them 'totally indie.'

*********
In this video, some bro is in an elevator, and he is like "I have tix the the Pashy Pit concert" and he asks some broad "Do u wanna come see this indie buzzband with me?"

Girl: "What are they called?"
Bro: "The Pashy Pits!"
Girl: "OMG they are so awesome."

[enter Janitor Bro]

Janitor: Oh hey bro I heard u on the radio. U cried. Here I have an audio tape.
Bro: Sigh...another indie bro bites the dust! Here's my tix! Laters. See u in the elevator at our office building.
Janitor: CHA CHING! Pashy Pit here we come!

*****

Do u think these web comedy bros 'crushed it'?
Do u think this video is bad 4 Passion Pit's brand?
Should these bros have picked a better band 2 win tickets 2?
Do u call in2 radio stations to win indie buzzband tickets?
Is this skit 'original' and 'innovative'?
Do u know a group of bros are are 'trying 2 make it' as a web comedy group?
Do u feel sad for 'web comedy' bros bc they are 'trying so hard 2 go viral'?
Will this video go 'indie viral'?
Will Pitchfork give this web skit a 10.0?

Diplo and the guy from Pashy Pit try to get 'effed up' on baby formula

Apparently the dude from Passion Pit (Michael Angelakos) and Diplo 'wrote some mp3s' 2gether. Not sure if I really care because Passion Pit is too 'entry lev bleep bloop wave' 4 me, and I am not even sure how much I like Diplo's music. I guess he is just one of those DJs with a strong/chill DJ brand but then when u take a step back ur like 'I guess he wrote that Paper Planes song and that 1 Major Lazer song but whatever.'

Anyways, it seems like they 'tried to get effed up' by drinking Pedialyte together. I have never had a kid, so at first I thought Pedialyte was some sort of energy drink + malt liquor, similar to Sparks or Four Loko. Then maybe thought it was a 'niche mixed drink' using a trendy new vodka that is marketed towards alts. Found out it is baby formula / something u give 2 kids who lost a lot of fluids.

Not sure why they are drinking it. Maybe they think it effs them up?
Do u think Pedialyte is a [HIGHLY BLOGGABLE] drank? Are tweens gonna start trying to get effed up on Pedialyte?

Worried abt them. Hope they are okay.

Do yall like Pash Pits/Dipsy?
Do u think they will write a bloggable mp3, or does Duplo just 'collab with every1' even if it is forgettable?
Can Passion Pit's next album debut at #1?
Is Diplo 'a genius'?
Would yall rather drink Pedialyte or Four Loko?
Does Pedialyte 'eff u up' [via Purple Drank]?
Do u 'care' that they collab-ed, or are collabs 'rlly boring'/usually unfulfilling + forced 2 create memes?

Passion Pit 'disses' HIPSTER RUNOFF, claims the writing has 'gone down the shitter'

Passion Pit is a popular indie buzzband who has broken into many mainstream markets, inspiring tons of 'critical backlash' from the blogosphere because the blogosphere just wants buzzbands 2 be authentic 4evr. Some say that Passion Pit is brilliant pop music, while others claim that they represent the mainstreamification of indie music.

It seems like the popular weblog HIPSTER RUNOFF has put the popular buzzband Passion Pit on their 'shit list', continually referring to them as "The Pashy Pits" and branding them as "entry level bleepy bloopy indie rock." Recently, some bro in Passion Pit named Nate Donmoyer did an interview with a college newspaper, and the college paper asked for his analysis on the popular weblog HIPSTER RUNOFF.

What then transpired was a huge 'rant', where Passion Pit basically shits on Carles, the HIPSTER RUNOFF brand, and the ALT REPORT brand:

V: So do you read Hipsterrunoff at all?
ND:: Yes, totally! Carles.

V: It's been just calling Passion Pit out the last four or five months it seems, ripping your ‘buzzband' to pieces with a lot of satire.
ND: I've been a huge fan of his blog for a while now, and to ever be mentioned on it is an honor whether it's positive or negative. The problem is I'm like 99.9 percent sure that it's not just him anymore.

V: Yeah, the writing has really gone downhill.
ND: Yeah, especially, what is it, The Alt Report? I'm 100 percent sure he doesn't write any of those. It's an honor to be slammed in that. It's totally fine with me. We totally take it to heart.

Has the ALT REPORT diluted the HIPSTER RUNOFF brand?
Does Carles write the Alt Report posts?
R u 'pissed' that this college journalist bro was 'critical' of the brilliant content/voice/tone on HIPSTER RUNOFF?
Is it an 'honor' to be 'slammed' on HIPSTER RUNOFF?
Is it an honor for Carles to be 'slammed' by [miscellaneous college newspaper]?
Is Nate Donmoyer a 'chill bro'?

Do all buzzbands read HIPSTER RUNOFF, hoping for a 'glowing review' by Carles?
Do yall like Passion Pit more now that they have confirmed they are all huge 'HRO fans', or does that make u want to stop reading HIPSTER RUNOFF?

It seems like there is some sort of 'huge storm' brewing between Carles, and many of the 2k9-2k14 buzzbands. There is a complex 'love-hate relationship', where you seek the attention of HIPSTER RUNOFF, but at the same time, fear the impact on ur brand if Carles <3/h8s u too much.

Is this 'bigger news' than the time Best Coast told Carles to 'eat a dick'? [link]
Should Carles be a chiller bro with Pashy Pits?
Is "Pashy Pit" a derogatory nickname, or an 'affectionate pet name'?
Are yall on #Team_Carles or #TeamPash?
Is Passion Pit 'right'? Has HIPSTER RUNOFF gone down the shitter?
Is the ALT REPORT written by 'Jeff', an intern from the University of Buzzbands?
Which brand has more lamestreamers 4 fans: HIPSTER RUNOFF or Passion Pit?

Lamestreamers on Facebook talk about new buzzband Pashy Pit, recommend ‘checking out’ Washed Out

Was recently 'refreshing my minifeed wall' on Facebook, and saw two bros talking about buzzbands. Facebook really has emerged as 'the ultimate organic hype machine', a place where people share, find, discuss, and stream new music. Really pumped to connect with bros, talk about music, share new buzzbands + MP3s. Wonder if PING is gonna make facebook wall-2-walls about buzzbands 'totally irrelevant.'

Anyways, it seems like 2 alts were talking about Pashy Pit, and then some bro had to 'intervene' and let him know Pash Pit is mad entry level.

First, a bro is like 'aww hell yea! Loves the Pash Pit.' He invites every1 to let him know that he is awesome because he loves Passion Pit.

His best altbro comes in and is like "Dude.  that band is entry level, u gotta ride chillwaves with Washed out. Really ashamed 2 know u right now. Might unfriend ur ass."

Then the Pashy pit alt is kinda embarrassed, and is like, "u sure they are as good as Passion Pit? Plz don't unfriend me."

Washed Bro is like, "They are damn effing good. U gotta drop that Pash Pit shit, brah. They aren't even real indie artists--they just exist to score commercials with quirky music."

It seems like the Passion Pit alt is kinda embarrassed, and is just like, "Okay, I'll check them out.  Sorry. TTYL I guess.  Bye"

Kinda seems fun that an altbro cared enough about his bro to make sure that he evolved beyond the entry level sounds of Passion Pit. Feel like maybe 'true bro-hood' is all about making sure ur bros are as relevant as u. Would be ashamed of my bros if they 'publicly tweeted' their allegiance/fandom abt a crappy buzzband.

Did yall ever have to have a 'chillwave intervention' with ur bros?
Did u ever have to teach ur bros that the Arcade Fire was 'entry level 2k5 shit'?
Have u ever had to let ur bros know that their 'taste in music sux'?
Do u feel like u have 'the best taste' in ur group of friends?
How do u find out about new music: Blogs, websites, or by 'lurking' wall 2 wall convos?
Do u h8 entrylevelers who 'brag' about the 'kewl indie music they listen 2' on facebook?

Entry Level Alts have fun facebook convo about Pashy Pit, Vampy Weeks, MGMT

Facebook is a popular social networking site where humans connect to share their lives' together. In addition, conspiracy theorists say that Facebook is a datamining experiment constructed by the CIA. N e ways... facebook is mainly a place where sweet people share their thoughts, consumer interests, and personal information. A lot of people like to talk about new indie buzzbands on facebook to make their personal brands seem like they are 'fun', 'in-the-know' human beings who are on the bleeding edge of culture.

It seems like a few free spirited entry levs had a kewl convo about a series of indie buzzbands. Have yall heard about any of these bands? Do u want to be a 'hippie' and listen to them at a music festival or what?

At first, some bro is like '<3 Pashy Pit... wanna be a hippie and listen 2 them.'

Then some other alt is like 'yea! let's wear tie dye... Gonna put this on our bucket list!'

Then they vow to listen to Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and some band called 'Neon Trees', which must be some sort of Neon Indian for mtv2 tweens band.

NOTE: Just listened to the Neon Trees, they sound 'hella gay'

</embed>

N e ways, then 1 alt is like 'check out this band called Natalie Portman's Shaved Head.  effing loves it!'

Then the other entry lev is like 'huh? what a weird band name.  Cannot be forreal.'

The alt has to be like, 'no, forreal, look it up on wikipedia_space/music.html because they are a real band.'

At the end, every1 seems mad pumped to be alive, sharing buzzbands in the modern indie era. One day, we will all go to a music festival together, drop acid, and listen to synthy, whimsical indie bands while wearing 'hippie' gear.

Do yall talk about buzzbands on facebook?
Have u heard of MGMT/Neon Pit/Passion Weekend/ Vampire Trees / Indian Passionate Weekend?
Do u h8 when entry levelers 'ruin' once-relevant buzzbands, or is it a natural part of the band life-cycle that u have accepted?
R u pissed at 2k10 and the lack of authentic buzzbands?

N e ways, gotta go listen to some Neon Trees. Hope they collab with Passion Pit and write 'the queerest synth pop alt song' in the history of the world.

See yall later,

Levi’s Jeans pays Passion Pit ‘top dollar’ 2 cover Smashing Pumpkins “2nite, 2nite”
</embed>

Apparently, Levi's is doing the whole 'record label' thing where they generate blog buzz by hiring indie/bloggie artists to 'create new mp3s' that can be co-branded with their products. Sorta wonder how much this type of stuff pays. If I had to guess, somewhere between $2,000- $1,000,000 has to be given to these buzzbands.

Anyways, Passion Pit decided to 'lend' their whimsical indie bleepy bloop falsetto aesthetic to the Smashing Pumpkins hit song "Tonight, Tonight."

Passion Pit’s re-crafting of the song strips away some of the ambitious bombast, losing the strings but none of the business. Angelakos’ high voice fits comfortably with Corgan’s lyrics, but instead of a piece of grandiose rock, he’s instead created a synthy underwater symphony.

Wonder if Billy Corgan is 'spinning in his grave' after hearing his timeless song get 'butchered' by some fleeting indie buzzband. One of the most definitive 'low key chill bro' songs of the alt rock era 'down the shitter' just to sell some blue jeans.
</embed>

Do u think Billy Corgan got paid 'mad licensing fees'?

Is Billy Corgan more talented than any artist in the indiesphere?
Is this cover 'awesome'?
Do yall support branded mp3 'record labels?
Will u buy more Levi's jeans because of this cover?
Do u wish Smashing Pumpkins didn't exist so they wouldn't have inspired Passion Pit?
Do u hope they do a 'magical' cover of this live so it will help to 'lube up' the entry level alt teen that you brought to her first indie rock concert?

GREAT MOMENTS IN DESCRIBING HOW A BAND SOUNDS [via press release]:

The band quickly developed its sonic identity: Angelakos’ high, high voice singing big pop hooks in an electronic world of bleeps, blips and whirrs.

Passion Pit gets ‘more mainstream’, does shitty remix of mainstream Katy Perry song
</embed>

Not sure 'who actually likes'/'respects' Passion Pit as a relevant band. I think they are sort of representative of the modern model of bands who are 'marketed as indie buzzbands' but are ultimately monetized/plugged in to the mainstream machine. Feel like they 'trick' tons of larger blogs/magazines into blogging about them like 'a buzz band' when they are actually just 'a marketing experiment.' Passion Pit is a man made buzz band.

N e ways, Passion Pit did this remix of a mainstream Katy Perry song called "California Gurls." It is probably some sort of 'requirement' of their major label record contract or something. Song sux/isn't really worth listening to, just felt like writing this post to 'hammer'/'make fun of' Passion Pit and all of their fans. Feel worried for their next ablum. Wonder if Pitchfork is gonna give them a 4.0 or a 9.0. Gonna be really bleepy bloopy in a ghey poppy way.

Feel like the original "California Girlz" song reminds me of a blog house song from the blog house era. Sound better than the pointless Pashy Pit version.

</embed>

Do yall like Katy Perry's slutwave pop brand, or is she 'trying 2 hard'?
Does she have an advantage over most females in music because she has 'huge knockers'?

Should Best Coast write more anthems about California to be more like Katy Perry?
Are California Girls 'effing sluts'?
What kind of people 'actually like' Passion Pit?
Do u <3/h8 Passion Pit?
Do u wish more indie starts had 'a rack as big as Katy Perry's'?
Is "California Girlz" trying 2 hard to be a 'mainstreamer summer anthem'?

Bitter Video Director ‘leaks’ rejected Passion Pit Video
</embed>

Apparently this is a 'rejected' video for Passion Pit's hit song "Sleepy Head." There are 'tons of rumors going around' as to how it leaked, but it was made in the era before Passion Pit was signed to a major label and got 'a powerful management team.' We can only assume that this video was made/leaked by an earnest artistic videomaker whose concept 'got the shaft' after Passion Pit got 'crazy budgets' and didn't need the pro bono work of video artist bros.

Pashy Pit's MGMT tells popular mp3 blog Sterrygum:

This video was shot before French Kiss/Columbia and Team 8 Management were involved with Passion Pit. The video precedes the current video of "Sleepyhead" ... and was rejected by the band and management. We don't know who leaked the video, but can assure you that it did not come from our camp.

Did Passion Pit reject the initial video because it 'seemed too entry-level' and they needed to chase corporate dollars instead of being a cutesy handclappy synth band?

Is the 'leaked' video 'better' than the 'official' 1?

</embed>

Or are they 'equally shitty'?
What's the difference between an 'official' music video and a 'fan' video?
Have u ever had a nightmare where 'sleepy head' played over and over again at a Pashy Pit concert full of entry level alts?
